“Jung confuses instinct and habit. According to him, the collective unconscious is part of the psyche; the myths and archetypes are permanent engrams of the species. We hope we have shown that this collective unconscious is nothing of the sort and that, in fact, it is cultural, i.e., it is acquired.”

After '67 my discovery that I had to buy olive oil was truly painful. From the day we knew anything we knew that olive and oil were there in our houses. Nobody from the village ever bought oil or olives. The village sells oil and olives to Ramallah, to Amman, to the Gulf. But for their own tables its people bring the olive in from the fields and the oil in from the press to the storeroom and the barrels that are never empty from season to season. For the Palestinian, olive oil is the gift of the traveller, the comfort of the bride, the reward of autumn, the boast of the storeroom, the wealth of the family across centuries.

Maaloul is a Palestinian village in Galilee. In 1948, it was destroyed by the Israeli armed forces and its people were expelled, so they headed either to Lebanon or to the neighboring town of Nazareth. Since then, the former residents of Maaloul were only allowed to visit it once a year on the anniversary of the occupation, so it became a tradition to organize a picnic in the same place on that day.
The people of Maaloul village fled from it under the fire of Zionist gangs in 1948. This is a wound that will not heal. The people of the wound cling to it because it may one day chart the way back. The villagers visit the ruins of their village once a year to celebrate over them. It is an amazing insistence on clinging to the land and its memory. We were able to carry our wounds in our bags because the wound prevents forgetting. That memory, which was written in blood, is more lasting than all the ruins and all the artificial countries.

But what is happening in Gaza is not only Israel’s war: it is a US war, and it is most particularly Biden’s war. Israel simply could not afford to carry out this prolonged and resource-intensive assault on the Palestinian people without US money and weaponry. Polling shows that a majority of Americans want a permanent ceasefire; Biden’s support for Israel even appears to be damaging his chances in the upcoming presidential race. And yet he’s refusing to listen to his voters, and has repeatedly bypassed Congress, in order to keep supplying Israel with the resources on which it relies. Conspiracy theorists may like to imagine that Israel exercises some outsize influence on the US, but the reality is quite the opposite. It is the US that exerts enormous power over Israel – and previous American presidents have been prepared to use that power. In the 1980s, in response to illegal Israeli attacks on Iraq and Lebanon, Ronald Reagan not only criticised the attacks in public, but also restricted US aid and military assistance to Israel in response, helping to force the withdrawal of troops. In the early 1990s, George H.W. Bush likewise used US aid to Israel as a bargaining chip in international negotiations. If Biden is refusing to leverage these same resources in order to make Israel comply with US policy, the only reasonable conclusion is that this war is already US policy.

Some pictures from today, March 30th, 2023, of the Land Day protests in Gaza - we mark the 47th annual Land Day in commemoration with the six Palestinians killed by Israeli occupation forces during demonstrations over land confiscations in 1976, I highly recommend watching this short video to get a better understanding of what the Day of the Land means to Palestinians. From River to Sea - Palestine will be free 🇵🇸

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine issued a statement on Saturday, urging people worldwide to actively oppose the Israeli occupation and its allies, intensify popular protests, and besiege Israeli occupation embassies. The PFLP called for continued international pressure to end the genocidal campaign in Gaza and to demand that Western nations halt arms exports to the occupying forces, which are used to perpetrate atrocities against the Palestinian people.
