Also is it me or Roy isn't a big fan of physical contact? With the most obvious exception, i.e. Riza.

It kind of struck me how during his visit to Chris' bar Vanessa runs to him and hugs him, and though he does smile affectionately at her, he does not hug her back. When he sits down, Vanessa leans on him while another girl strokes his shoulder and arm, but he keeps his hands on the counter.

When he dates Madeline for intel, he opens and closes his car's door for her, yet he doesn't bother to touch her to keep up the facade: he doesn't offer her help to get out, doesn't kiss her hand like a gentleman would do.

In the promotional arts, Hughes is always the one squeezing him, which tends to annoy him most of the time. And even when he's blind, Izumi helps him stand and tries to give him some physical comfort, yet he NEVER leans on her for support and he doens't hold her either in any way out of necessity.

But then he's back with Riza—

QLs I Watched in 2024 That Made My Life Better

Personally, my 2024 was generally weird and pretty painful, but watching QLs became an unexpected solace and comfort through the hard times. So I compiled this list as a thank you to these shows as well as everyone on here that makes GIFs and posts meta and chats about our little queer shows for helping me through those hard times.

Love for Love’s Sake (2024) 🇰🇷

I will never shut up about this show and how good it is. It’s the first BL I watched this year and I really didn’t expect it to affect me so deeply. If you haven’t watched it yet I won’t spoil anything, but those who’ve seen it y’all Know, y’all Understand Me.

Knock Knock Boys (2024) 🇹🇭

A delight. An absolute delight. This was airing at a time when I really needed a silly goofy fun time, and this show gave me that and more. I was so happy to have this story to look forward to every week. @bengiyo has a wonderful review on this show if you’re looking for some far more coherent and comprehensive thoughts on the show. All I can say is that I’m so happy this show and these characters exists bc they brought me so much joy.

My Love Mix-Up! (2021) 🇯🇵

I started watching this show completely by chance just bc I like the actor Meguro Ren. Little did I know that this show would be one of the few things that could make me cackle even in the throes of pain lol. From the very beginning this show states point blank “pls don’t take any of this serious, this is silly hours, it’s Jokes O’Clock right now” and that’s exactly what I needed!! Bless this show.

The Nipple Talk (2024) 🇹🇼

Admittedly I was purely pulled into the show by the character Mama. I was like “whatever Mama has will surely be able to cure me of all my ailments” and SURE ENOUGH not only did Mama deliver but this show is sooo so queer and watching it felt like being at home. That’s really the only way to describe it. I felt very comfy and at home watching this. I recently finished this one and I already feel like watching it again, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one that I’ll keep coming back to.

Love in the Big City (2024) 🇰🇷

Y’all. Even just the anticipation for this show to air was enough to keep me feeling good and upbeat. I was so excited to see how the series would adapt the book, and I was also really looking forward to LITBC book club’s thoughts on it! (thank you so much to @lurkingshan for gathering up all these posts and organizing them by ep/part you’re the realest Shan 🙏)

Even though the show dropped all at once, I mentally and physically couldn’t consume it all in one go. Each part took me at least 5-7 business days to process, and even though I finished it I’m still going back to it every once in a while and rewatching certain episodes. This show was so good and still hasn’t left my brain, and I don’t think it will for some time. It’s very clear how much love and care went into making this show, and I love that each part had a different director. I also really like this interview bc you get to hear each director’s thoughts on the part they directed.

The Hwang Da Seul Cinematic Universe 🇰🇷

Ah so, you’ve made it to the Hwang Da Seul portion of this post, welcome! We are emotionally compromised over here 🌊🚶‍♀️

I watched a few of her works for the first time this year and they all left a lasting impression on me (read: The Brain Worms), and everyday I’m thankful HDS exists and is using her time in this life to bring us these beautiful stories.

Let Free The Curse of Taekwondo (2024)

*lies flat face down on the floor and grunts incomprehensibly*

This show changed me. Sounds dramatic but it’s true. It filled me with hope. “It’s not over. You can always start over.” It made me feel like even if I don’t have a loving supportive partner that everything was going to be ok and that I can always decide to heal and move forward.

This show literally aired a month ago and my brain is still so scrambled from it that I can barely give you any coherent thoughts about it. No thoughts, just *stares into the middle-distance with eyes unfocused and glazed over*

To My Star (2021) & To My Star 2 (2022)

I watched both series in succession so I’m bundling them up. Anyway, loved it. Both series. All of it. The sequel series especially was my fav bc I really enjoy seeing folks in long term relationships work through their issues.

Blueming (2022)

After my To My Star mental breakdown I needed more Hwang Da Seul, so unsuspectingly I checked out Blueming and was once again YANKED in by lovely cinematography and compelling yet ordinary characters. Also, when I was watching this show I came across an interview she and the lead actors did where she talked about why she likes directing BL projects in general. A quote that I liked was “Of course heterosexual romance/love is beautiful too, but with BL there prejudices that prevail in our society. So cheering for the two people who go against that to be with each other is what makes BL attractive.”

Special Mention: Comfort Watches of 2024

Whereas all the above series were shows I watched for the first time, these following shows are the ones I kept coming back to and watching again and again and again when I needed something just to feel better.

What Did You Eat Yesterday? (2019-2023) 🇯🇵

A lot of physical pain this year = a lot of insomnia and a show that really helped me when I was aching in bed and couldn’t fall asleep was this one. These characters, the food, seeing older queers just living their domestic lives, everything about this show was so comforting and I’m so glad I could keep coming back to it whenever I needed to.

I Cannot Reach You (2023) 🇯🇵

I first watched this back in 2023 and it single handedly pulled me into the QL fandom here on Tumblr. I like to watch this one whenever I’m feeling particularly confused on what to do in life. It’s like “hey if the babies Kakeru and Yamato can figure it out then you know what so can I 🫂”

So yes anyway..

While this list doesn’t include every single show I enjoyed this year I wanted to highlight the ones that stuck with me the most. This year honestly could have really sucked so incredibly hard, but it didn’t, not really, because there was so much beautiful art to consume and talk about and be excited about with all y’all in this lil community :’)
