Avoid These Ingredients in Your Skin Care Products
The cost of skincare products can be enormous over the year and my aim is to educate and encourage people to make their own skin care products.
The benefits of making your own fresh skin care products is that it is cheaper, the ingredients are less harsh on the skin and do not contain any nasty chemicals.
Cosmetic products like, shampoos, soaps, moisturisers, lotion that you apply to your skin can be just as beneficial or harmful as anything you put inside your body.
It is essential to nourish your body from the inside out as well. Ingredients found in face washes, lotions, sunscreens and more which have been linked to everything from allergic reactions to hormonal disruptions to other disease.
While there are numerous studies on this topic, everyone can agree that making your own is the best and safest way. Many of the ingredients can go directly into your bloodstream.
**Always do a patch test before fully applying anything to your skin.
1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
SLS has been shown to cause skin irritation and can strip the skin’s natural oils. SLS is believed to be a contributor to acne. Companies use SLS as a foaming and lathering agent to remove dirt from the skin by frothing or foaming. Banned in America but still allowed to be used in the UK. SLS can be found in soaps, shampoo, body wash, foundation, face wash, gels, mouthwash and toothpaste. Choose a natural shampoo or try making your own chemical-free products.
2. Triclosan (TCS)
Triclosan was all the rage, as antibacterial products became the trend in the 1990s. TCS used in liquid products and Triclocarban is an antibacterial and antifungal agent present in some consumer products, including toothpaste, soaps, detergents, toys, and surgical cleaning treatments. It is similar in its uses and mechanism of action to triclocarban use in soap bars has been linked to hormonal disruption, allergies and bacterial resistance.
Found in toothpaste, deodorant, antibacterial soaps.
Try a natural antibacterial and antiseptic agent like tea tree oil, peppermint, eucalyptus and lemon.
3. Parabens (Includes methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, heptylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, and benzylparaben.)
Found in makeup, moisturiser, shaving gel, shampoo, personal lubricant and spray tan products.
Used a preservative in cosmetics that can mimic oestrogen, to breast cancer and reproductive issues and skin issues.
According to the (ECSC) European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Products, longer chain parabens like propyl and butyl paraben may disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive and developmental disorders. Avoid and look for “paraben free products”, which should be clearly labelled on the product.
There are many more ingredients to avoid, do some research and see what you can find.
