Reflections “Willow” (2020) // An absolutely brilliant execution of all things brutal, Reflections deliver their a fierce onslaught of breakdown riffs that complete entire verses track after track that flow into, well, even heavier breakdowns that are coated in ambient guitar waves of atmosphere. Think Josh Travis’ finest moments, where Tony Danza Tapdance really got it together (IIII, basically) or even Emmure’s finest moments where Frankie really seems to have it together on the low end alongside some punctual cadence and brutal chuggathons. Bodysnatcher “This Heavy Void” (2020) // If you’ve heard ABACABB’s “Survivalist” you’ll definitely notice striking similarities between records. While the Virginia natives were definitely way harder than anything displayed here before disbanding in 2010, many influences linger throughout. Bold chugathons, groovy breakdowns that lead to more breakdowns that are actually verses in the form of groovy breakdowns are essentially the DNA of the band and are captured nicely here. Lorna Shore “Immortal” (2020) // Century Media releases the band’s first major label release and highlights the band that’s been crafting this niche for years. While opening up with the seven minute title track was a bold move, some of the riffs throughout the record sound like a newcomer to the Chugecore site. While the drums and leads at times stand out as key features, in 2020 TRA is going to expect something else from the deathcore space from an act that’s been at it for over a decade. Even though there’s so much negativity around this release, when it comes down to the content within, it’s really just mediocre at best. While it may be a major milestone for the act, it’s really just a dated sounding record. All of it sounds like it could’ve been taken from that third or fourth Carnifex record. Vicious Embrace “Purged In Flames/Winter Demonstration” (2017) // The band brings a classic metalcore effort to the table that’s very similar to the early 00’s scene that gloated Skycamefalling (without the cleans) and A Perfect Murder (before they tried to do what Throwdown did and go Pantera). VENOM PRISON “SAMSARA” // ALBUM OF THE YEAR // Not enough good things can be said about Venom Prison’s efforts to rise out of the underground. Besides strategically plotting tours with some of the scene’s biggest names and putting in the field work, the band has been instrumental in crafting their art sinew by sinew, weaving together intense songwriting, sandwiched alongside strong packaging and layered with animated artistic expressions, most notably in the form of their past two records. “Samsara” is a ming-bending release. All the elements of traditional death metal are there, and the band’s progressive influences are noted while not blatantly overshadowing each variable of the songs’ composition. There’s a unique hue to the tracks, with each one coming out like a major can of ass whooping through auditory assault. But it would be a drastic oversight and a horrible omission not to highlight Larissa Stupar and the breath of fresh air that she breathes into the effort.
