Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, review
Hey how's it going, Uli here with my very first movie critique, and I want to pay tribute to one of my favorite movies of all time and that is no other than Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. This movie holds no real personal meaning to me, except being a totally fun and overall fulfilling movie, full of so much heart and personality. I always insist to anyone willing to listen that they revisit this movie, because it's never as good as the second time around. At least for me revisiting this movie came well over 10 years after the first viewing and it's taken up a special place in my heart ever since. Initially, once upon a time ten years ago, I thought of this movie as being pretentious, over the top with the visual effects, kind of demented with the video game references, nerdy cliches, and tropes. In the last ten years I've found myself to have matured a bit, developed a pseudo palate for good movies and an eye for spotting what's good about them. So one night of mindless scrolling through Netflix I felt like a blast in the past, and I figured I'd try a bright and wacky love story with the one and only Michael Cera, I figured at the least it will be a distraction. I've always been a big fan of Michael Cera since he was George Michael on Arrested Development so I jumped right in. So on the second go many things become clear, in that you realize how much attention is put into every scene. From the sounds which highlight a character's motivations, the impeccable set pieces, the awesome wardrobe,  and the flawlessness from which you transition between practical effects and special effects. A movie, like any venture gets its motivation and ideas from the top down, and you can certainly see Edgar Wright's direction front and center. I always admire a person who stays true to the source material, and after some quick reading it becomes apparent that the movie ends up being a comic book literally come to life. And that is no easy feat, you look at other very recent examples of comic book style movies and find that they're dogshit in comparison, like Ang Lee's hulk, or Joel Schumachers Batman and Robin. True, those movies are just bad within their own right but the point I'm trying to make is that this is not often attempted, but Edgar Wright's definitely perfected it. I saw a meme once that said that Michael Cera looks like a guy that stumbled onto a movie set, kind of awkwardly walked into a live set and was never asked to leave, and I kind of agree with that. He has become a bit of a unidimensional character in his career, it's this though that makes him so unique though, no one can play an awkward teenager better than he can. So take Scott Pilgrim, a young hipster bass player living in a small apartment with a gay roommate, plays bass in a band and does the things he does with one motivation in mind, love. The oldest story ever told, stupid, fickle love. You can't help but feel sympathetic for the guy, we've all had our hearts broken, found ourselves to be indifferent in a relationship we kind of rushed into, done absolutely anything to impress a girl, and above all loved with all our hearts. With age comes a certain cynicism, a very easily achieved sense of boredom that one cannot remedy with just any content, you really have to dig deep and find stuff that really plays at your struggle, that pokes fun at hard issues, and maybe even make you feel a little less alone, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of those escapes. It certainly makes me laugh out loud (no, I will not write the acronym), and reminds me in a very sincere way of what it's like to find love, one that you would do anything for.
