âWill, the harpies donât touch Apollo kids.â
Will scowls, crossing his arms. âI have no idea who started that rumour.â
Nico raises his eyebrows. âItâs not true?â
Instead of responding, Will lifts the edge of his shirt, cocking his hip slightly so itâs easier to see the skin in the low light. Nico leans in closer, squinting, tracing cold fingers over the raised white scar. Will shivers.
âThatâs harpy alright.â He whistles. âThey got you good.â
âI was nine years old and mislead,â Will grumbles, pulling his shirt back down. He catches Nicoâs hand in the process. âCecil said we would be fine. Cecil is a liar and a fraud.â
âHermes kids often are.â
Nico could be a Hermes kid, honestly. Beyond the insane poker ability, thereâs aâŚbend, to his smile, something knowing and quick and crooked, as fleeting as the flash of his sharp canines and absolutely impossible to miss. Will swallows, a couple times, fighting the dryness of his throat that pops up like clockwork at the turn of that teasing grin, at the gold in his river-mud black eyes. Nico smiles like heâs about to sell you back what he stole for ten times the price, and Will falls for the scam every time.
âWell, it was â whatever.â
He canât quite find his train of thought, flexing his newly damp palms, shrugging at the itch at the back of his neck. Nicoâs grin flashes again like he knows itâs there, like he can see the neurons crashing into each other in Willâs head, like he can hear the pounding of his heart.
âEloquent.â
âShut up.â
He snorts, rocking back on his heels, turning his gaze out to the common. The braziers burn low, sprites of flame crackling up to the heaven, winking back at the tittering stars. Wind hums gently through the silver poplar trees outside Cabin 13, and cicadas and fireflies sing lowly back, swelling and crashing in sync with far-off waves. If it werenât for regular screeches of angry bird-women, it would be beautiful. Breathtaking.
Willâs not nine anymore. Apollo kids may not have immunity, but heâs fast. Uncommonly so. Realistically, he can make the sprint from Nicoâs cabin to his long before the harpies notice, let alone descend in a wrath of feathers and fury.
And yet.
âI havenât seen a harpy devour someone in ages,â Nico muses. âI bet theyâre pretty hungry.â
Will scowls. âOh, shut up.â
Nico grins wider. âBet theyâre chomping at the bit for a real meal of the delicious golden boy flesh they tasted so long ago.â
âI hate you.â
âBet theyâre watching you. Waiting.â He wiggles his fingers, hiking up his shoulders and twisting his face. âWi-ill, Wi-ill, come out come out, come break curfew ââ
He laughs when Will shoves him, cackling louder than the she-demons, choking on his own horrible impression of their shrieking voices. His laugher rises in the damp-humid night, dancing in the leftover campfire smoke and resting heavy on Willâs shoulders, and it is gravelly and low and Will is weak, weak, weak. Weak for the sound of it the feel of it the taste of it, curling up hot in his belly, zapping up and down his veins at the speed of sound, forcing the breath out of his lungs in an awed sort of exhale, a sigh he could not stop if he tried.
âCâmon, you weenie.â Nico wipes the tears out of his eyes and holds out his hand, flexing his fingers. âIâll walk you home.â
There is no world in which Will doesnât reach out and slide their fingers together, no world in which his vision doesnât swim at the contact, his throat turn to sand, his knees to leaves and twine. Nico is freezing, like he always is, and it zips through Will so quickly he barely manages to choke down the gasp that bubbles out of him.
âYou got harpy immunity, now?â
Nico grins, and this time itâs sharp on purpose, this time itâs wide and more crooked than a thiefâs and sharp as the deadliest of knives, wide and cocksure and knowing, knowing, knowing.
âDonât worry, princess. They wonât come near you.â
Will follows him across the common with a heart so cold it burns.

Autistic Shoto Todoroki
The analysis
First off, I would like to say that this is purely a passion project. I am not a professional, I am an autistic teenager and Iâm just very interested in this character because I heavily relate to him. Iâve collected some scenes from the manga and two specific things from the third light novel.
If you could boost this (if youâre interested thatâd be great because while I really enjoy doing this it does take a lot of time! With that being said letâs dive into this and I hope you find this interesting!
Could Shoto Todoroki be autistic? Here is why I think he absolutely could.
Emotional perception
Letâs start with one of the most obvious things about his character. The emotional factor.
Shoto doesnât emote in the way his peers do. Now, of course this also plays into the brooding mysterious guy archetype, but thatâs not what weâre talking about.
Shotoâs face is typically relatively neutral, this is apparent from the moment we first meet him and while he does tend to express his emotions more clearly later in the story, it doesnât ever really change. Something that immediately comes to mind is how in chapter 202 Iida asks if Shoto is alright because Iida noticed his expression change (because he knows him very well by this point). Ojiro points out that he did not notice this, since Shotoâs face barely changes at all.
We see Shoto in a lot of situations where his peers show excitement while his expression remans completely flat. This lack of emoting is something extremely common in people with autism. Itâs not that they donât have emotions or donât express them at all, they just do it in a way that is hard to understand for people outside the spectrum or those who donât know the autistic individual very well. They often struggle to understand what emotion theyâre feeling in the first place and of course itâs hard to express feelings if you donât know what youâre feeling.
Shoto doesnât only show difficulty expressing his emotions but also recognizing those of other people. One of the best examples of this is the final exam arc, where he gets paired up with Yaoyorozu. In chapter 63 specifically, he doesnât realize that Yaoyorozu is upset about something even though to someone else itâd probably have been obvious. Only when Aizawa points out that he should listen to her does he notice that heâs been doing something wrong. Shoto didnât notice she was upset, and he didnât notice he was being rude.
Emotions and emotional responses are continuously shown to be difficult for Shoto to handle. What he has absolutely no issues with, on the other hand, are academics. Of course, we can naturally assume that heâs been drilled to study hard from a very young age, but he is also extremely intelligent outside of the classroom. During the sports festival he is the first person shown to figure out that the obstacle course poses a lot more disadvantages to the people in the lead, during the practical exam, he is able to come up with a solid strategy very quickly.
During the training camp arc, him and Deku are the ones to come up with a strategy to protect Bakugo on the spot. He also doesnât seem to consider his intelligence anything special. A lot of autistic people tend to assume that other peopleâs experiences align with their own. This can be seen when he seems surprised about Denki worrying that heâll fail the written final exam. He asks how he could possibly fail if heâs been attending class, like the concept is entirely foreign to him (also thereâs about a 0% chance this was a joke because this is Shoto weâre talking about.) He is very good at logical problem solving but emotional issues seem to stump him.
Literacy and verbal filters
Moving on, another big factor that Shoto seems to struggle with is his tendency to be overly literal and very blunt. There are several instances where he says things that we as readers as well as other characters perceive as insensitive. Once again, his interaction with Denki about the final exams (chapter 60) can be an example. He didnât seem to think it was inappropriate and because this is Shoto, he didnât ask to tease him either. Denki even points out that this was insensitive to say. A more subtle example is his conversation with Izuku in chapter 73, when they talk about Kota. His overall phrasing is fine, but he remains very blunt and direct and essentially ends up telling Izuku that his tendency to cut to peopleâs hearts with his words is annoying.
My personal favorite for an example can be found in chapter 83, in the hospital after the training camp, when the class visits Izuku, Shoto points out that âOf course Bakugo isnât here.â Needless to say, he couldnât possibly have timed this statement any worse. It wasnât necessary in the first place, but he didnât register it as something inappropriate to say.
One example of not him being unintentionally rude but just showing a different approach to telling the truth is seen in the third light novel. The fifth chapter revolves around the class preparing a birthday party for Iida. At one point, Sato asks if Iida has food allergies out of nowhere. Iida naturally asks why he needs to know this, Shoto is immediately ready to answer the question honestly, which would have spoiled the surprise, had Izuku not stepped in.
Autistic people often have trouble seeing whether something is or isnât appropriate to say. Neurotypical peopleâs brains have a filtering process, it helps them be aware of possible responses to a statement. This filtering process is not functional or only limited in autistic people.
Shoto is also overly literal. In chapter 57, he gets upset over his friends continuously getting their hands hurt and refers to himself as âthe hand crusherâ. He is very serious about this and does not understand how Iida and Izuku could possibly think he was joking.
In chapter 164, he answers Gang Orcaâs metaphoric question entirely seriously. During the interview training in chapter 241 he first seems confused by the made-up mission in the first place. He then proceeds to ask Mt Lady if she has a heart condition when she uses the phrase âMy heart would burst out of my chestâ. Finally, he appears genuinely horrified when she calls him a âlady killerâ (âMy smile will kill women..?!â)
In chapter 257, when Mineta claims school talk will âruin the taste of the foodâ, Shoto simply says it tastes the same to him, to which Mineta proceeds to call him out for being overly literal.
Autistic people typically struggle to understand jokes and sarcasm, in fact, itâs often one of the main characteristics in people with an ASD diagnosis.
Overfamiliarity and Oversharing
Shotoâs tendency to overshare is another thing that is very typical foe ASD.
He doesnât seem to understand that telling his life story to a classmate heâs barely interacted with prior is not exactly an appropriate thing to do. He repeats this later with All Might and, most notably, in chapter 165, when talking to the preschoolers during his provisional licensing course.
He also seems to have a slightly different perception of what makes someone friends than his classmates. As shown in chapter 241, to him, spending time with Bakugo during the licensing course is enough to deem them friends. Even when Bakugo points out that there is no correlation between the time spent together and friendship, he still doesnât seem to understand.
Autistic people tend to become overly familiar and are easily attached to people if they perceive just one of their interactions as positive.
Attachment to inanimate things
This is something not really shown in the manga, but noteworthy, nonetheless. We know that Shoto, upon moving into the dorm building, remodeled his entire room from a modern, more western style room, into a traditional Japanese style one. The second chapter of the third novels goes into depth about why he did this. Shoto was entirely dumbstruck and thrown off by how different the room is from what he was used to. He knew the traditional Japanese rooms from home and his brain assumed that the dorms would be the same. He felt like the different style was wrong. He doesnât like the unfamiliar flooring and even a small thing like the positioning of the light switch bother him.
Heâs not comfortable in the unfamiliar environment, so he decides to change it.
Autistic people often struggle to adjust to changes. In environment and routine. They feel most comfortable in a well established and familiar routine, that includes the feel of their living space. A change of environment this drastic would be extremely stressful for someone on the spectrum.
Another thing that isnât particularly obvious but does make sense when considered is that Shoto seems to have a comfort food (cold soba). While heâs never shown or stated to be a picky eater he does seem to opt for the same food whenever he gets the chance. Autistic people often have a very restricted diet due to sensory processing issues that apply to food textures, smells and taste.
Additional points
Shoto seems to be a little face blind. He doesnât know who Kota is when Izuku mentions him, which seems to genuinely surprise Izuku. He also didnât remember Inasa at all despite them having been at the same entrance exam.
In chapter 202 heâs shown completely zoning out. Of course, this can happen to anyone, I just found it interesting because it was shown so clearly, making it obvious that it was something we should pay attention to.
In the novel chapter in which he remodels his room it is also mentioned that the feeling of synthetic floor against his feet upsets him.
Shoto also seems relatively indifferent to temperature. Of course, that would correlate to his quirk as well, but it is also common for autistic people to struggle with temperature perception as well as other things that neurotypical people donât struggle to recognize like hunger or thirst. This specifically applies to situations where you would typically end up in pain like, for example, frostbite. Shoto would obviously be used tot his but him showing no reaction at all to his body halfway freezing over was a little unnerving.
He also is shown to be relatively uninterested in certain social events like for example the room competition after the class moves into the dorms. He doesnât want to be there; heâd rather go to sleep. In the beginning he also shows clear disinterest in making friends with his classmates. Both very typical things for people on the spectrum.
In chapter 244, Hawks asks Shoto a question in a way that seems to confuse him so much he canât even form a coherent response. [Hawks: âSeemed like you were in trouble, Endeavor.â Endeavor: âMe? Not a chance.â Hawks: âBut it seemed that way, didnât it, Shoto?â Shoto: âUm..IâŚuhâŚâ]
He probably didnât register if Hawks actually wanted him to answer or not.
In chapter 64 he mistakes Yaoyorozu crying for her feeling sick, horribly misreading her expressions.
This last point is more personal than the rest, watching his reactions to Endeavorâs fight with the Nomu in chapter 190 made me think of the stress progression that often causes autistic shutdowns. Shoto was clearly becoming more and more stressed as he was watching and once it was over simply seemed to shut down. That is a very typical response to emotional distress or overstimulation in autistic people.
Final disclaimer
This is purely for my own entertainment; it is not meant to be offensive to anyone and I am not saying that this is absolutely what is going on. Iâm simply elaborating on a theory/headcanon that I have. That being said, if you have questions feel free to drop them in the ask box, Iâd be thrilled!

Why I think Todoroki Shouto is autistic
Quick word before analysis:
I know this one has been done a few times already but I still want to write a long analysis on this just because I feel like it ^^ This is only based on the anime because I didnât finish reading the manga yet.
I wonder what the author of Boku no Hero Academia was thinking when he created his characters because so many of them seem to be autistic and I wonder if this was on purpose or if he just did it without realising
Anyway, this is only me sharing my point of view so take it for what itâs worth. Also autism is a spectrum. The following characteristics donât represent its entirety.

My name is Hala, from Deir al-Balah, Gaza. I live with my four children, Abdul, Jaber, Mohammed, and Lian, and my mother-in-law, in a never-ending nightmare. Our home was bombed, and everything we had turned to ashes. Now, we live in a burnt house, with no safety or hope.

My husband, Adham, is stuck in Egypt, and I face this torment alone. My children suffer from hunger and illness, and we have nothing to protect them. Life here is unbearably difficult; every day is a struggle for survival.

I urgently need your help to raise $35,000 so we can escape, as each person requires $5,000. This money isnât just numbers; itâs our hope for a new life away from pain and suffering. We are human beings who deserve to live, so please donât let us drown in this nightmare.
Help us, as we are in desperate need of your support.

A Will Solace Character Analysis: the Underappreciated Soft Side
Iâve noticed many fanfictions have Will Solace OOC. So Iâve been thinking about aspects of Willâs personality fans seem to either gloss over or exaggerate. Here, this post is me doing an in-depth analysis explaining Will Solaceâs canon personality in the books, and how it can sometimes differ from fanfictions. Sprinkled in this analysis are tips to fanfiction writers on how they write Will as more in-character.
There is one major aspect of Will that people seem to ignore or underemphasize. Nico best explains it when describing Will in this quote
Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiled-up energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as aggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action - the campâs best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers.
To sum it up, Will Solace is a very chill and calm character. A lot of writers make Will more irrational, impulsive, overbearing, and emotional than he actually is. Will is not the type of character to create drama unless heâs, as Nico puts it, âunder fire.â In other words, the intense side of his personality doesnât come out unless the situation is urgent or dire.
Fans remember during the Second Giant War how he gets angry and argues with Nico over Nicoâs health and shadow-traveling, so many assume Will is going to be this fiery over a lot of other things regarding their relationship. For example, fanfic writers may make Will controlling or overly sensitive with Nico. However, keep in mind, Will gets heated with Nico during the Second Giant War because Nicoâs shadow-traveling is killing him. This is how Will describes Nicoâs dire state.
âCoach Hedge told me all about your shadow-travel. You canât try that again.â
âI just did try it again, Solace. Iâm fine.â
âNo, youâre not. Iâm a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, youâd be in no shape to fight. But you wouldnât make it. One more slip, and you wonât come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctorâs orders.â
Will is a healer. When he touches Nicoâs hand, he can sense how little sleep and food Nico has been getting and how Nicoâs being taken over by darkness. Nico is on the verge of death and hasnât cared about his health for a long time. Nico is also stubborn about it, so Will has to be aggressive in order to save Nicoâs life. This aggressive behavior is not the norm for Will, but it can sometimes come out when he has to assert control in a life-or-death situation.
Will is a calming prescence. Heâs a diplomat. He stops violence on multiple occassions.
Heâs one of the few people whoâs able to calm Clarisseâs violent rage, and he does so in a gentle manner.
Clarisse pointed her dagger at Rachel. âWhat about their allies, huh? Did you see that tribe of two-headed men that arrived yesterday? Or the glowing red dog-headed guys with the big poleaxes? They look pretty barbaric to me. It wouldâve been nice if youâd foreseen any of that, if your Oracle power didnât break down when we needed it most!â
Rachelâs face turned as red as her hair. âThatâs hardly my fault. Something is wrong with Apolloâs gifts of prophecy. If I knew how to fix it ââ
âSheâs right.â Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisseâs wrist. Not many campers couldâve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing peopleâs anger. He got her to lower her dagger. âEveryone in our cabin has been affected. Itâs not just Rachel.â
One of the most underrated Will Solace moments is when he stops a bloody battle from happening between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter. Â
But he knew it wouldnât do any good. After weeks of waiting, agonizing and steaming, the Greeks and Romans wanted blood. Trying to stop the battle now would be like trying to push back a flood after the dam broke.
Will Solace saved the day.
He put his fingers in his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering.
âDONâT BE STUPID!â Will yelled. âLOOK!â
People are so used to seeing demigods, especially male demigods, being aggressive fighters that they canât wrap their heads around a brave and strong demigod who actively tries to avoid unnecessary conflict and destruction as much as he can.
And thatâs Will Solaceâs strength: he has the ability to prevent as much harm as possible.
Will is a difficult character to write. Thereâs a lot of dueling factors with his personality. Heâs calm and pacifying while also being brave and assertive. Heâs fun and lighthearted while also being intelligent, logical, and grounded. Heâs laidback while also being responsible and hardworking. Heâs insecure but not melodramatic. Heâs very caring and protective but not pushy.
Willâs personality confuses Nico sometimes too.
Heâd always thought of Will as easygoing and laid back. Apparently he could also be stubborn and aggravating.
The trick to writing Will is to keep in mind his default personality is a soft and lighthearted character. Writers tend to overemphasize the hard side of his personality when his default personality is actually the soft side.
Think of the relaxing, lanky cat metaphor Nico uses for him. He and Nico bicker often, and it works for Will because he rolls with everything and doesnât take things too seriously. Heâs able to alleviate Nicoâs moodiness with humor, wittiness, groundedness, and patience. Nico affectionately calls Will a âdorkâ because Will usually keeps things light. Interestingly enough, heâs able to be lighthearted without coming across as insensitive or an airheaded goofball, the latter of which is something Nico dislikes about Percyâs personality. On a related sidenote, another way writers make Will OOC is they make him too dumb or too immature. I know I mentioned to focus on Willâs soft side, but be careful to avoid that too. Heâs a SENSIBLE, lanky cat.
The way Will keeps his composure during a stressful situation by using laughter while still being mature is expressed well in this exchange with Apollo. (Yes, Will has a lot to manage.)
It was difficult to think of this young man as my son. He was so poised, so unassuming, so free of acne. He also didnât appear to be awestruck in my presence. In fact, the corner of his mouth had started twitching.
âAreâare you amused?â I demanded.
Will shrugged. âWell, itâs either find this funny or freak out. My dad, the god Apollo, is a fifteen-year-oldââ
âSixteen,â I corrected. âLetâs go with sixteen.â
âA sixteen-year-old mortal, lying in a cot in my cabin, and with all my healing artsâwhich I got from youâI still canât figure out how to fix you.â
âThere is no fixing this,â I said miserably. âI am cast out of Olympus. My fate is tied to a girl named Meg. It could not be worse!â
Will laughed, which I thought took a great deal of gall. âMeg seems cool. Sheâs already poked Connor Stoll in the eyes and kicked Sherman Yang in the crotch.â
The fiercer side of Willâs personality comes out only when the situation calls for it; this happens sometimes when he has to be a caring family member, a responsible healer, or a warrior in a dire situation. Even when he gets more forceful, he doesnât get more forceful than he has to.
Since Will has such a balanced and lighthearted personality, what are his flaws? What are the dark sides of his personality? There are four main things that stick out.
1. Heâs insecure about his self-perceived lack of abilities.
âI agree,â Will said. âI wish I was a better archer ⌠I wouldnât mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my fatherâs gifts to stop this war.â He looked down at his own hands with distaste. âUnfortunately, Iâm just a healer.â
2. He sometimes struggles to endure the heavy responsibilities he has as a healer and as a protector to his family.
âI got it reattached,â Will told me, his voice shaky with exhaustion. His scrubs were speckled with blood. âI need somebody to keep him stable.â
I pointed to the woods. âButââ
âI know!â Will snapped. âDonât you think I want to be out there searching too? Weâre shorthanded for healers. Thereâs some salve and nectar in that pack. Go!â
I was stunned by his tone. I realized he was just as concerned about Kayla and Austin as I was. The only difference: Will knew his duty. He had to heal the injured first. And he needed my help.
3. He forces himself to bottle his emotions to keep his composure.
Will laughed under his breath. âIâm terrified. But one thing you learn as head counselor: you have to keep it together for everyone else. Letâs get you on your feet.â
Hereâs a second example.
I rested my hand on Willâs shoulder. âDonât worry. Weâll be back by dawn.â
His mouth trembled ever so slightly. âHow can you be sure?â
4. He constantly worries about his loved ones.
Nico rested his hand on Willâs shoulder. âApollo, we were worried. Will was especially.â
In conclusion, Will Solaceâs personality is difficult to get correct. But donât worry, if you write Will as a laidback, witty cat in your fanfics, I guarantee heâll be more in-character than many other fanfics with Will Solace.
(Note: I am only human. If you believe Iâm misinterpreting some aspects of Willâs personality, feel free to express it. What I say isnât 100 percent the right interpretation.)

âWhat are your parameters for loving me?â
Careful to keep her head locked forward, Naomi glances over at her son. Willâs picked-bloody fingernails scrabble at the worn bandage around his wrist, twisting until his knuckles turn white. The car shakes with his violently bouncing leg, out of time with the shuddering engine and rumbling dust roads under the wheels.
âThere arenât any.â
âThere have to be â some.â The bandage is longer than she thought, unspooled in his lap. He winds it back up again quickly, hands blurring; darting around his wrist, tapping on his knees, flexing and locking, flexing and locking. âI mean, what if I became a misogynist?â
She snorts. âI think youâre good, honey.â
âNo, Mom, what if? Think about it for real. Youâd stop loving me, right?â
âI might knock you around a bit, but itâd pretty hard to stop loving you completely,â she teases. She pinches the stubbornly-clinging baby fat of his cheeks between her knuckles, ruffling his hair when he ducks away.
âSeriously, Mama.â
âI dunno, Will. Iâd send you to work for your Auntie Di for a while, probably. Reckon sheâd straighten you out good.â
âOkay.â He nods, twice to himself, chewing on his lip. The bandage is wrapped around his elbow, now, pulled tight enough that she can hear the groan of his joints. âOkay. What if I killed someone?â
âBe a pretty hefty secret for the two of us.â
âAn innocent person. Cold blood, just because I wanted to.â
âYou wouldnât.â
âI could, Mom. People are â unpredictable.â He picks at a hole in his shorts until itâs wide enough to slide three fingers through, pulling the bandage in after them. It looks yellowed next to the green of the fabric, worn. âSometimes you think you know someone but you donât.â
âI know you.â
She pushes on her turn signal, slowing to a near stop. Willâs twitching fingers unconsciously synch up, cri-tap, cri-tap, cri-tap. The rusted rims groan as her tires amble around the bend, quieting as she lurches forward. They both duck as she hits a pothole, narrowly avoiding the warped ceiling.
âCold blood, Mama.â
âIâd â it would scare me, I guess.â The next few potholes are smaller â she can avoid them with some manoeuvring. A mouse darts out onto the road, rushing out from the surrounding cornfields, and she slams on the break, thrusting her arm out to the passenger side. Willâs hands come to cup over her forearm as he slams into it, grunting softly. The mouse sprints across the rest of the road, tail swishing behind it, disappearing into the stalks. She settles back into her seat, brushing across Willâs seatbelt as she does, and presses the gas again. âMore for you than of you. For what would happen if someone came knocking.â
âYou wouldnât report it?â
âNo I wouldnât report it, Will, Jesus.â
âBut I â but I did something evil.â
âThis is a hypothetical, baby.â
âAnd in the hypothetical. Youâre ââ He scrubs his hand down his face, eyes squeezing shut. âYouâre a good person. You have â morals.â
âIâm a person, Will.â The GPS beeps at her â twenty-five miles to the Tennessee border. âAnd Iâm a mother before that.â
âSo if I â you would just â just like that? Youâd â forgive me?â
âIâd love you,â she corrects.
âBut you wouldnât forgive me.â
She shrugs. âHonestly? I donât know. Iâve never thought about it.â
âSo how do you know youâd still love me?â
âBecause thereâs nothing you could do, baby. I mean it.â
âNothing?â
âNothing.â
âNot even if I was a bully? Or a landlord? Or if I â liked boys?â
He says it quickly, or tries to, but he stumbles over his words, tripping over the syllables. Naomi sucks her bottom lip into her mouth, biting it hard.
âYou would still love me, if I â if I ââ
Keeping her movements steady, she removes her boot from the gas. Will glances, fast, at her tightening knuckles on the steering wheel, looking quickly away. She guides the car to the shoulder of the road, pulling into park, and kills the engine, unclipping her seatbelt and turning ninety degrees to face her son. Will crowds into the corner of the seat, hunching in on himself, shoulders tense and curling, hair failing over her lowered head.
âOh, Will.â
His body shakes as she pulls him into her, hands trembling so bad they spasm, twitching out of the fists he makes. She shifts until both of her arms wrap tightly around her torso, ignoring the burn of the trench, tucking his forehead into her collarbone, dropping her lips to press against his temples, his cheeks, the crown of his head.
âItâs okay, baby.â
âItâs â not. Iâm still, I can still ââ
âSh.â His tears drip onto her shirt, her skin. He chokes back a sob and she tightens, reflexively, pulling his whole body even closer to her, somehow, making space for his too-long legs, knees hitting his chest, feet dangling off the seat, gearshift shoved into his thigh. His chest heaves with the effort of keeping his cries locked up in his throat, hidden behind clenched teeth, squeezed shut eyes. His fingers cling onto her shirt, twisting the fabric so hard it warps. Her own fingers clutch desperately at the ridges of his spine, the inside of his elbow; squeezing, holding, bruising. His voice is rough as raw grit and reedy as pond scum, barely above a whisper.
âI like boys, Mama.â
âI heard you.â She rests her forehead on his shoulder, her own breaths shuddering. âI heard you, sweetheart.â
âI like â a boy.â
âOkay.â
âFor a long time.â
Her swallow constricts her throat, shoving the air back in her lungs. How long, she cannot bring herself to ask â when was it, exactly, that he decided he could not trust her with this? When did she lose that privilege? Was it when he started protecting her from the pain in his life, or before? When he lost everyone close to him at once, or when he broke down and told her about it? When was she no longer the person he ran to when he was scared, nervous, afraid?
He used to come to her for everything.
âI love you,â she whispers, voice wet as it slides against the lump in her throat. She squeezes him again, and this time, he squeezes back, pressing his face into her skin. âWill Solace, you are what keeps me going, do you understand that? Come up here, baby, look at me.â
His eyes arenât hers. He takes after his father, really; after his older brother once upon a time. But he speaks like she does and smiles like she does and stands like she does, and when he cries he gets that same look, like the ocean has emptied itself inside of him. She cradles both palms to his wet cheeks, thumbs pressing under his eyes, kissing his forehead, his cheekbones, wiping the tears away.
âFifteen years long youâve been the light of my life. I need you to understand that, Will. I have never loved anything like I love you and there will never be anyone who comes even close. There is no hypothetical, no situation, no anything that could change that. There are no parameters. None. You understand me?â
âEverything stops,â he croaks. âEverything has a limit.â
âNot me,â she says firmly. âYou ainât a baby no more, baby, but youâre gonna have to pretend for a moment that I know everything again. I am telling you that there is no boundary. And I am not giving you the option to disagree. You are my son and my sun and thatâs final, Will. Thatâs final.â
His face crumples. She pulls him close again, sighing, letting him curl up in his lap like heâs ten years younger than he should be, instead of the ten years older he acts. She runs a hand through his knotted hair and another down his back and presses her lips to his temples, holding him every place she can reach, and rocks them, even though thereâs no room to do it, humming slow and low under her breath.
âWeâll get there,â she promises, tapping a beat on his shoulders, pressing a kiss to his hair. âOkay?â
He nods into her neck. âOkay.â His voice is small but not cowering, thankfully; small like heâs hiding in her instead of from her. She fights the urge to sag into him, to burst into tears of her own.
âI love you, Will. No matter what and forever.â
âI love you too, Mama.â
