Some Post from a Complete Stranger: I don't know who needs to hear this but--

Me, Leaning Forward in my Chair, taking my smoking pipe out of my mouth: Maybe I am the one who needs to "hear this"! Maybe this is the Secret Knowledge which I have long sought, the hidden mathematical formulae that lets others march towards life's various milestones with some semblance of ease and grace but which has eluded my desperate, clawing grasp. F is for Fudoh: the next generation. Fudoh was my introduction to Takashi Miike. It is, in a word, lurid. Young Fudoh carves a bloody path of revenge through his fathers yakuza gang.

The illustration is inspired by Fudohs attack on the dope temple.

I had in mind a sort of magazine shoot on a soundstage with some big text, it's a motif I think I will return to again.

E for Enemy of the State A fun techy spy thriller, 90's a la mode. Starring Will Smith and directed by Tony Scott.

The building in the background is imported from google maps. I wanted to have the pentagon, but that and a big chunk of washington is just a flat plane’’’ I’m not quite happy with this one. I did better than the original British poster though, so there is that at least.

D is for Desperado!

One of my favourite 90’s action movies. Desperado shows the influence of Hong Kong action during the 90’s. 

I Tried to keep things pretty simple after last week. I tried some projection lighting, which seemed to work pretty well.

C is for Commando! This week's illustration references the scene where Arnold reveals he lied.

Commando is the movie from all jokes about action movies. And like all great action movies lives on momentum and charisma. Stellar performance as always from Arnold. This marks the beginning of the transition of his persona from hard case to ‘dad that likes a bit of exercise’.

The first time I came across this film was just before my family's big move to the countryside. We had gone to visit a family in a town of 20 or less, in the middle of nowhere, to look at their house. Looking through their VHS's I saw Commando. It was just Arnold on a black background with the tagline “let’s party”. It was rated R though, so I wasn't allowed to watch it’’’

This one turned out alright, but I managed to turn it into a slug for all my normal reasons. The first mistake I made was letting the idea for it sit in my head for too long. As is always the case, when it came to sketch it, it was a mess of contradictions. I kept editing the composition until the end where I covered it with text -_-’’’ Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I was able to try a few technical things, like blending materials, scattering plant assets and editing bought assets. The porsche is from Zifir3d on blendermarket, the plants are from a free pack by maxtree.org and the city lights are a photo by bennitalent on unsplash.

This weeks illustration is B for "Bleach". Bleach was a big deal for me way back when. I loved both the anime and manga but the chapter covers were as cool as anything I had ever seen up until that point. What I want to do as an illustrator is in no small part informed by those covers.

I got off to a late start this week and didn't really settle on a composition until the end when it sort of became a mater of fitting the pieces together as best I could. When I was finished the figure I had a real moment of "wow teenage me would have shit himself if he painted this" :'D. The lettering on the windows and setting the 2d element in the scene with multiple planes are two things I wanted to try. In the end I am happy with what I got done in the time frame.

I am starting a series of illustrations, A to Z of my personal canon. First up is "the Assassin" staring Bridget Fonda. The American remake of "La Femme Nikita". I'm not sure if I really saw it that many times, but every time I went to Blockbuster I saw the cover and it became lodged in my memory.

Making this went fairly smoothly, I was aiming for kitchen shapes rather than anything too accurate. The drawing didnt quite sit right in the 3D scene so I comped it in after.

Not sure how I feel about this one. Its more ambitious than the last one and more successful but does not quite meet those ambitions... Thats fine though, and probably a better place to be than only working on things I know I can do.

What if the alien vs predator game was so successful that they made some cross over games?

I am switching over from SF fanart to film fanart for a while and this is kind of a change over piece.

Ambling my way forward, looking for the next challenge. Pleased that was able to use such a sketchy drawing in this. I dont know what level of finish I want going forward, but its nice that it still works at this level.

A sketch based on a "To live and die in LA" poster. There's a lot to improve on, but I am happy with how much I improved it in the composite.

This is a sketch of an idea for some X-files fanart. I'm really keen to play with lighting and lenses in 2.5D. This is probably as far as I take this piece, I want to move quickly and build some comfort with blender.

I want to make 2.5D illustrations. I cant quite put into words what I am chasing... Its not quite old video game advertising, but a memory of a feeling kind of thing.
