"Take control of your mind and meditate, Let your soul gravitate to the love." ~ Where Is the Love?, Black Eyed Peas, 2003
"The Black Eyed Peas" by Markus Klinko, 2003
Arty-Fact: "I'm continuing my journey into creating pop culture images. I like to call myself a documentarian of pop culture, more so than a fashion photographer or celebrity photographer, because there's many ways of doing celebrity photography. I think my aim is to always create an iconic, timeless image." ~ Markus Klinko
Tumblr media
If it's possible to condense the evolution of hip-hop into a single entity - embodying its street perspectives, pop dominance and global multicultural appeal - it'd be the Black Eyed Peas. The union of rappers will.i.am (William Adams) and apl.de.ap (Allan Pineda Lindo) dates back to hip-hop's early-90s golden age when their L.A.-bred jazz-rap crew A.T.B.A.N Klann signed with N.W.A. icon Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. After Eazy's death in 1995 derailed the group's momentum, the duo teamed up with MC Taboo (Jaime Luis Gomez) and supporting vocalist Kim Hill to form Black Eyed Peas. But when Hill departed in 2002, the group didn't just find a replacement; they acquired a new figurehead in girl-group exile Fergie (Stacy Ann Ferguson). Her seductive swagger pushed the Peas to the top of the pop charts with mid-2000s bangers like "My Humps" while recasting the Peas' social commentary as inspirational post-9/11 uplift on "Where Is the Love?" And as EDM went overground at the decade's end, the Peas were waiting in the festival dance tent with beat-pumped thumpers like "I Gotta Feeling".
In 2003 the Black Eyed Peas released Elephunk – the group's third studio album. The album charted at number 14 on the American Billboard 200 albums chart and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has gone on to sell more than 9 million copies worldwide, with 3.2 million in the United States alone. This is the group's first album with Fergie and their first album where the group is credited as The Black Eyed Peas.
Markus created the record's cover art.

Art is not the FTSE 100
If art isn’t a stock and flipping fresh paint is too risky, does that mean that investing in art is a fool’s errand?
Prints are emerging as an overlooked sweet spot.

“This place is a survivor—still standing after decades of change in Hollywood. It may have a 1.7-star Tripadvisor rating, but we don’t judge our landmarks by thread count.” ~ Hugo Soto-Martinez, Councilman, 13th District

Get Your Art Fix!
"The Polaroid Set (David Bowie)" by Markus Klinko, 2001
Series: Bowie Unseen
Arty-Fact: Markus met David Bowie just days before 9/11, at his New York studio, where David attended an editing session to help select images for his wife Iman. The legendary super model had hired Markus to create the cover for her book "I AM IMAN". A few minutes into the session, David turned to Markus, and offered him to shoot the cover art of his upcoming album, "Heathen".
The tragic events of 9/11 delayed the scheduling of the shoot for "Heathen", but David stayed true to his word, and the shoot took place on October 10th, 2001.

“I'm just an individual who doesn't feel that I need to have somebody qualify my work in any particular way. I'm working for me.” ~ David Bowie
"David" by Markus Klinko, 2001
Series: Bowie Unseen
Arty-Fact: When asked about his first encounter with David Bowie: "I remember it very well, like it was yesterday. I was surprised..I didn’t expect to meet him. Iman brought him along for a book editing session. I photographed her for the cover of her book, 'I am Iman', in 2001. He came up the stairs, I didn’t know he was coming. He was very lively, friendly and super charismatic, as one would expect. I was giddy and excited that he was there. I wasn’t prepared. Once he looked at Iman’s edits, he seemed impressed. Then he asked me flat out: 'Do you want to shoot my next album cover?' It was a series of unexpected events. He was clearly polite, open, talkative, a very smart and nice guy."
