Through the Depths Comic Progress- Studies of Wish Fish

The call of a wish fish is 'I have a dream for you if you would like to chase me?' Had to do a few fish studies for page 2 of Through the Depths. Fish can be a bit tricky. Is because they are all woobly (technical term there), 

 This got me thinking about the phrase if wishes were fishes we'd all have riches.  I don't know about you, but this doesn't make sense to me. What is a wish? The longing for a thing perhaps, but not the thing itself. 

 So you can picture your wish as a darting little shape of light, maybe swimming close to you in the shallows, or flashing out from dark blue beyond, where you must swim out far with no bottom to catch you if you are to have a chance to grasp it

 If you have ever headed off to a new unknown place all on your own, I hope you will enjoy #Throughthedepths. This is a story inspired by my experience going off to new places all on my own, be it new cities, new countries and even new continents. 

 I'm posting progress shots and concept work for the comic once a week and hope you enjoy following along. Let me know what was the biggest move you've ever done? Mine is probably the solo volunteering I did in Zambia (which is longer ago now than I really care to think to closely about).

Any normal day could be the day adventure finds you.

Meet Mer. She is having a boring old day. She doesn't know yet that change is on the horizon. She is Bilbo before Gandalfs knock, Harry before the letter. We know something is coming but she doesn't yet.

Art I did this week - A Rare Creature

There was a moment where you just ran free in the full glory of your magical unicorn self. But suddenly you notice, the others aren't like you. You become self-conscious. You've never thought before about your uniqueness and your darkness, you have always been you .

But now you are self-concious, watchful even wary. Unsure of the reaction of those around you.

Will you run free once more with careful abandon or do you now hide from view?

Art I did this week - Siren call of Summer

You blink. For a second you thought there was something odd about the women swimming in the lake. But it's just a group of girls decked out in their cutest swimwear enjoying the midsummer sun.

Then the sun glares in you eyes and wait those are indeed horns in their hair. You are enchanted by the glow of their skin and the sparkling water glitters like diamonds arou d them.

Their siren calls pulls you towards deeper waters.

Art I did this week - Hand tinting the little faun girl

My charcoal portraits use vintage photos as their inspiration. Had the idea the other week that it would be fun to experiment with colouring them with pencil crayons. I really love how they turned out. The hand tinted quality makes them look even more vintage!

Mermaid’s Cavern Triptic- art I did this week (well this three)

Okay not over a week..a panel a week really. So really art I did for 3 weeks.

Been experiment with medium for my comic trying to figure out whether I'm going to use pencil crayon or pastel... decisions decisions.

In the meantime more concept art!

Art I did this week - Adventures in the deep dark wood

Unplanned sketches are sometimes my favourite and this one was a lot of fun.

I was just going to do a few studies of leaves and autumn but of course when I got going I started to add a bit of fairytales and folklore.

You might recognise the cottage from photos on the internet. I've often seen it labled as a perfect witches cottage. Well the only thing missing then was was chicken legs. My partner suggested the foot print and I loved the idea. I can imagine someone coming upon the tracks later and shaking with wear over what they might encounter in this dark forest

Thank goodness art opens a door and lets you escape into a fantasy land of your own creation.

Art I did this week - Dragon in Sunbeams

This piece has proceeded in various fits and starts. I really loved my first sketch and then I played around with scales and then I actually did a full colour pencil crayon drawing that I hated.

I then chose to go and find a painting for the background to reference and now we are here. The final I'm hoping will be in chalk pastel... though honestly if that piece goes off I may put the whole thing aside and do something else.

On one hand this has been a frustrating piece of work. On the other its my goal to really hone a process for developing individual pieces and this piece has reinforced the need for that.

I also have been working on a morning art routine before my office job so it's been a piece that is full of experimentation of approach and process... even if it individually is not 'worth' the frustration and effort am hoping the learning from it will be.

Art I did this week -Dragon and the Forest

So i decided to do smaugust. I started with this idea I'd just do tiny dragons in my sketchbook. Then I got frustrated with how my dragons looks, did a bunch of studies of lizards. Then I used another painting as inspiration for the background. and I'm so proud.

Now the tricky part... can I replicate what I did?

Art I did this week- Pixie Movie Night

Waking up with a dead phone battery is a pain! Pixies much have been binge watching movies again... this also explains why Netflix says I've watched so many cartoons and anime 🙄

Art I did this week - War Paint for Pixies

When your lipstick is crushed and your palettes are broken and there is a fine coating of eyeshadow everywhere you know the pixies have been raiding your makeup for warpaint

This is a pencil crayon piece on toned 9x12 paper as I attempt to document the many ways Pixies are stealing my stuff and generally causing chaos in my life.
