Rant incoming
I feel like the problem with a lot of Disney's live action remakes (and arguably Wish) is they're trying to appeal to a crowd that no longer exists, namely the people who used to claim that the Disney Princesses were sexist.
All the interviews tend to include, "Well she's not chasing a MAN anymore" which...almost no one sees the princesses like that, anymore. Virtually NO ONE still believes the princesses are man-chasing sexist caricatures of women.
Cinderella is now hailed as an abuse victim who stayed strong long enough to get help to get out of her situation. Anyone who says she should have saved herself is basically regarded as a victim blamer. And it's very clear in the film she wasn't looking to marry the prince, she just wanted a night off. She was the only one who wasn't in line to meet him. She didn't find out she met the prince until he went looking for her!
Snow White is now hailed for her negotiation skills, ability to calm down after extreme stress (she had a moment of panic and had to cry for a bit, but who wouldn't after finding out The Queen hired someone to kill you?), and ability to take charge of a house of adult men. And again, she was an abuse victim, this time trying to escape ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS. While she dreamed of her prince, it was secondary to her main goal of SURVIVAL. There are also entire video essays about how Snow White gave hope to people during The Great Depression.
Everyone acknowledges that Ariel wanted to be human BEFORE meeting Eric. We all know she was a nerd hyperfixating on humans, and also standing up to her prejudiced father.
We understand Sleeping Beauty wasn't the main character, the Three Good Fairies were, AND PHILLIP WOULD NEVER HAVE BEATEN MALEFICENT WITHOUT THEM! He literally depended on them! WOMEN SAVED THE DAY! But even then, is it really such a sin for a girl to fantasize about romance and fall for someone with corny pickup lines?
We all understand Jasmine just wanted someone to treat her LIKE A PERSON. She rejected every Prince before Aladdin because they treated her like a prize. So why did they need her to want to be Sultan? How did that make her more feminist when she already wanted to be treated like an equal and have a say in her future? Is it only empowering if you want a career in politics?
We admire that Belle, despite living in a judgemental village, was kind to everyone (even though she found the village life dull), and her story teaches girls that the guy everyone else loves isn't always a good guy. What's sexist about teaching girls about red flags? And she didn't start being nice to The Beast until he started treating her with respect and kindness.
Do I really NEED to defend Mulan or Tiana? I think they speak for themselves.
Rapunzel was yet another abuse victim who just needed a little help to get out of her bad situation. In this case, she also needed to learn that she was an abuse victim, and that what Mother Gothel did WASN'T normal, much like many victims of gaslighting.
And don't get me started on the non-princess animals.
Perdita had a healthy relationship with Pongo to the point she was open to express her pregnancy fears to him, and was ready to TEAR APART Cruella's goons for daring to touch her puppies as well as adopting the other puppies. Like, she was so ferocious the goons mistook her for a hyena! She's basically that "I AM THAT GIRL'S MOTHER!" scene from SpyXFamily if Yor were a dog. She and her husband were a TEAM.....but they made a Cruella live action to turn her into a girlboss?! The literal animal abuser!? THAT'S the woman you wanted to put on a pedestal when Perdita was RIGHT THERE!?
Duchess kept her kittens calm after they had been catnapped and was classy as heck. Nice to everyone regardless of social class during a time period where that was uncommon.
Lady stood up to Tramp when she believed he had abandoned her and didn't really care about her. She found out he was a heartbreaker and was like, "Nuh uh. No. You are not doing that to me! You put me through enough."
Miss Bianca from The Rescuers was IN CHARGE the whole movie, and was willing to risk life and limb to save an innocent child. THAT TINY MOUSE TOOK ON ALLIGATORS! And she picked Bernard to accompany her because he was the only one who wasn't ogling her. And then in the sequel SHE DID IT ALL AGAIN! I wish I were as brave as her.
Like, the public haven't accused these ladies of being sexist caricatures since 2014 (Actresses and actors don't count, they're out of touch like the rest of Hollywood) yet Disney is operating under the assumption that the public still thinks that way, hence all the "sHe'S nOt AfTeR a MaN iN ThIs VeRsIOn" talk.
The live action remakes are trying to attract an audience that doesn't really exist much, anymore, and back when it did exist, was comprised mainly of people who didn't actually watch the films. The Disney princesses are no longer seen as sexist, and feminine qualities are no longer seen as weak or undesirable.

African women, specifically older African women are some of the most misogynistic, self hating, perpetrators of male privilege and harmful gender stereotypes known to mankind.
Because why is my African auntie saying that her son cannot learn how to cook because he is a man?
Or that her son is automatically husband material?

The fact that Jesus would be considered "woke" if he was alive today scares me.
Was reading the Bible as one does and noticed these:
1. Jesus was definitely a feminist, or at least saw women as his equals: in a society where women were to be seen and not heard, Jesus not only spoke to a woman in public(which was unheard of at the time), healed a woman with uncontrollable menstrual flow(which was unheard of at the time, bc ew, women on their period are unclean), appeared to women first after his raising up and told them to bear witness( even though It was unheard of at the time; women were not even allowed to be witnesses in court), actively challenged gender roles(he literally asked Martha why she was wasting her time doing traditionally female things and not doing better things, like learning), and didn't even condemn literal sex workers .
2. Treated everyone with love and respect, even when they were condemned by society. Especially when they were condemned by society.: he literally said, he came to help those people specifically . He helped sick people, (touching them even when the leaders at the time considered them unclean), widows, poor people, etc.
3. Actively condemned the corrupt religious leaders, calling them sons of vipers and calling them out on their hypocrisy and bs. He even threw out those who were exploiting people in places of worship. Twice!
4. Preached empathy, forgiveness, peace and love.
It's so weird to me how people use the Bible to justify sexism, misogyny an bigotry when the person we're supposed to follow did the exact opposite.
At this point, y'all are following the pharisees(the people who killed Jesus). They:
1. Upheld harmful gender roles, saw women as inferior
2. Hated and condemned the sick, poor and less fortunate, calling them unclean and untouchables.
3. Exploited their followers
4. Were huge hypocrites and never practiced what they preached.
5. Literally insisted that Jesus be killed, even though he did nothing wrong, except call them out on their bs.
All in all, don't be a pharisee.

I love how if a woman looks "ugly"*, people say she looks like a man.
The implication, therefore, is that men look like "ugly" women
* "ugly" here means not traditionally feminine btw.

Shounen/Seinen anime that feel like shoujo
Disclaimer: when I say these anime feel like shoujo, I don't mean it because of the romance aspects or the fact that they have female protagonists, or were written by women. They just give off 'made for women' vibes
Also I refuse to explain. Iykyk.
1. Black butler
2. Toilet Bound Hanako Kun
3. Inuyasha( genuinely thought this was a shoujo for the longest time)
4. Kagura sama love is war
5. Case study of vanitas
6. Bingo stray dogs
7. Horimiya
8. The apothecary diaries

A celebration of an anime with one of the best female representation in shonen
When I was getting into Gintama for the first time, the last thing o was expecting was good female representation. After all, this was a shonen from the early 2000s, they're not really known for having the best female representation in fiction.
Or at least non-physically strong women.
Usually in shonen, a woman's worth and role in the story is based on if she can fight as good as the men. And if she cant, she's labelled as useless both in the narrative and by fans ( for example, Sakura being the most hated female character of all time, just because she isnt as good of a fighter as the main characters; Erza scarlets and Yoriichis whole popularity hinging on the fact that they are hot, badass women who kick ass, etc)
In fandom and in the shows themselves, non combative women are usually looked down upon or relegated to the love interest or emotional drive for the male main character, and while those are not bad roles and are important in their own right, having a female character who is a non combative person be the star of their own arc is not usually seen
(there are exceptions though. For instance, FMAB and one piece have various non combative women who go through character arcs, though, they are few and far between. Eg. Winery and her quest for revenge, Shirahoshi facing her fears, etc)
Thats where Gintama came in. There were female characters who were not fighters and still were the main characters in their own stories. They had agency and actively drove the plot of their arcs.
Three main examples come to mind:
1. Tatsu the blacksmith: in the first action arc of the series, Benizakura arc showed how versatile sorachi was at writing female characters. In this arc alone we had Kagura and Matako being complete badasses, but we also had the woman who was the catalyst for the arc. I like to call Tatsu the MVP of the Benizakura arc, because without her, Gintoki would never have won. First, she was the one who commissioned Gintoki to defeat her brother, second, she literally made a sword to defeat the Benizakura. At the end of the day, she fought her own battle. A battle of ideology between her and her brother. And she won.
2. Otose: I could speak at length how much I love otose as a character. She is an older woman whose main issue isnt being old, like many older women in Shonen (ahem, ahem, Tsunade ahem, ahem), and she's also a female character who never lifts a finger to fight, much like the other women on this list. She is an incredibly complex character whose strength is her kindness. She is kind to all people, and in turn, people gather to help her. I love the 4 devas arc because of that. While the other 3 devas personally fought, Otose literally had an arm of people fighting in her stead. All the people who she had positively affected and personally helped all gathered together to help her in the end. Such an icon!
3. Hinowa: I love hinowa so much. She's the reason I began writing this in the first place. In fact, the Yoshiwara in Flames arc is one of my personal favorite arcs in the series. I just love how she is portrayed as this strong and empowering figure whose will was so strong, she was called the sun of Yoshiwara. Tsukuyos reason to fight was to protect hinowa and the other women of Yoshiwara. Her strength of will and character is the reason why the arc begins in the first place. If she hadn't saved Seita as a baby, he would have never come back to try and save her. She is the light and hope of so many oppressed women, she is why they keep going. Because if Hinowa can keep going, so can they. Word of her strength was so widespread that Kamui even wanted to fight her, thinking her strength was physical. Not only that, she becomes essentially the community leader in Yoshiwara after its liberation, only adding to the fact that these women absolutely loved and respected her as a person. Not to mention, ahe is sassy and snarky and rebellious. She definitely deserves more love and i wish she had more screentime. more .
While the more combative women such as Kagura, Tsukuyo, Sacchan, Otae, Kyubei and Matako are great and amazing characters in their own right, people do not talk about these women enough.
I just wanted to ramble over female representation in anime and kinda went overboard.😅😅

Ok fruits basket as a whole is a full on sob story fest, but nobody can tell me anyone had it worse than Momiji. Like yes, trauma for everyone but being hated by his mother to the point that she needs to forget him then being forced to watch his family be happy without him‐ alone? Then the girl he loves is unquestionably in love with someone else? Then he breaks the curse first and now he's alone in that way as well??? Like damn my boy deserves a break.

my favourite genre is "villian who has a valid point that questions the status quo that the story's entire universe is based on, (and sometimes can even be applied to irl issues) only for it to never be adressed after the protagonists beat the shit out of him"

If I had a nickel for every time there was a supernatural type anime with a powerful yokai/spirit that was released by a teenager and trapped in the body of a cat and acts as a mentor/ snarky comic relief character with a giant ego and is also the mascot for said show, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't alot, but it's weird it happened twice.
