Ok but in all seriousness.

The character of Christine Canigula is explicitly ADHD, combined type (bc ADD is a kind of outdated term). She has a special interest (which ADHD ppl have, it’s not an autistic exclusive thing) in theatre and uses it as a way to expend extra energy. I know this because back when I did theatre in high school I was the EXACT SAME WAY. I’m STILL very similar to how she acts, even though I’m twenty goddamn years old and not in drama anymore.

Please for the love of god stop passing over the fact that she not only states that she has it but spends most of the show expressing traits of someone who is ADHD.

And I mean NUANCED traits!!! She interrupts and talks a lot about her interests and is desperate for attention (hello brain fuckery!) and so much more!!!

Just like. Look at your writing. I’ve seen a lot of fics where p much the entire rest of the cast (Jeremy, Michael, Rich, Jake, etc) have ADHD. And that’s great!!! As someone who’s seen the show twice I have notes for analysis on the cast’s ADHD coding and the influence of the narrative and all that junk!!!

But we’re already reduced to the ‘hyperactive twitchy White boy who can’t sit still’ stereotype. It’s INCREDIBLY rare to see a GIRL exhibit such nuanced and realistic portrayal of my disorder. And believe me, when I saw her onstage I told everyone around me that she was just like me.

Don’t wipe that out of her character.

Write 👏 Christine 👏 Canigula 👏 as 👏 explicitly 👏 ADHD 👏

man okay i have gone on A Lot about this ship bc i put a lot of heart into christine and jeremy as characters and i am very defensive of their dynamic, at least in the 3.0 incarnation.

bc like okay i can def see people brushing it off as a one-sided love story esp in 1.0, and maybe see christine as a manic pixie dream girl and/or something for jeremy to attain and save, and some lines i feel could be better regarding that idea. but i think that when you look deeper into the script, jeremy is good for christine.

because jeremy, despite all his issues overcoming it, owns and admits to his insecurity and depression in a way christine doesn’t, because she tends to deflect or downplay her issues, instead trying to reach out to others through theater, and it comes across like she thinks admitting that she “wants things to be easy” makes her selfish. him matter-of-factly telling her that’s normal in VIMH is really important for her to hear. i wish more people acknowledged her insecurities (because we clearly see she’s socially awkward and even bullied like jeremy is) and how jeremy helps her, just as much as she helps him shamelessly embrace his weirdness. jeremy admits to his depression while repressing his weirdness, while christine admits to her weirdness while repressing her depression, which is a good parallel. (michael also has a very similar arc but i think it’s more obvious with him; christine gets brushed off more often).

christine is very empathetic and compassionate, even before she gets to know jeremy she’s constantly worried when he seems nervous, and is the only person to help him in the mall after he freaks out. i think this might, admittedly, cause some complication, because she also tends to feel so hard for others that it depresses her and she blames herself, like after the fire with rich and jake. however, jeremy also obviously cares about her, and wants her to express herself rather than bottle up her feelings, so i don’t think he’d let her drive herself nuts over him. and he’d probably do the same to her, lol. it’d just be a cycle of “no please don’t worry about me, you’re the one who’s struggling!” and they have to both deal with their empathy issues and just boost each other up :)

also i like to think jeremy genuinely cares about her art, i mean if you watch ILPR (particularly the wrol/steph ones) he is just enthralled with her, and obviously he does listen to her in 3.0 with their clever “bowling alley performance art” change, and that’s why he knows her well enough to identify when the squip sets her off, and her autonomy is so important to him (because it’s important to her, as she ranted at him for assuming she would ever want a squip, because jeremy’s arc involves realizing not everyone with insecurities wants to change what makes them unique) that he risks himself to save her, which is a point everyone makes but it’s important.

i also like to think jeremy is genuinely interested in theater (which is canon to the book) because his interest in the play comes before christine even shows up, so i like to think they both can indulge in acting together, and jeremy genuinely likes learning about new things, and christine is a good teacher, i think it’s just therapeutic for them both as jeremy embraces this outlet and christine gets to infodump :)

which leads me to my point that they’re both Very Autistic Coded (and ADHD coded- hell in christine’s case it’s outright canon) and they both really get each other on that front… both know how it feels to get super into something and want to share but nobody ever seems to listen, and how social interactions are practically a chore, but they can just be themselves around each other. and while michael is great i think he struggles to be patient with jeremy (which is something that can be worked out between them; i’m not putting down that ship and i love it too) while i think christine is more capable of understanding how it feels to put on a face for other people, though she does it in a slightly different way.

i love these!! it’s so nice seeing someone write about christine’s less positive attributes since i feel oftentimes she’s portrayed as a pure ray of sunshine when a part of loving her can be developing her into a person with real human emotions. especially wrt her adhd since being neurodivergent isn’t just talking about hyperfixations and stimming, it’s these things as well

Sometimes Christine has a really hard time with anger. She finds it overwhelming and hard to handle. She doesn't want to but sometimes she just has angry outbursts when people really upset her. She always feels really bad afterwards but she doesn't know how to stop

She really doesn't deal well with people disliking her special interests/ hyperfixations. She never shows it in front of the person but it always makes her feel a little sad.

She's lonely at school. She has people she talks to sometimes but she's not sure they count as friends. She's got a hard time making friends with people who she doesn't share interests with.

She usually can pick up on jokes but sometimes she can't tell. Sometimes she gets upset when people are joking with her because she just can't tell.

She loves to sew. She really loves the sound of the machine and the feeling of the fabric. She really loves fabric stores.

She doesn't cope well with things not going to plan. Having things go against what she expects makes her feel stressed out and upset.

She likes video games. She doesn't get many new ones and tends to play the same few over and over again.

She has trouble with knowing how loud she's talking which can lead to people getting annoyed with her. She doesn't handle people being annoying with her very well so it makes her sad.

Sometimes she worries her friends don't like her because of bad friends in the past have kind of messed up her trust in friendships.

Sometimes she feels disconnected from a lot of people. One of the reasons she loves theater so much is that it makes her feel a sense of belonging somewhere.
