so basically the aerialbots are captured early on in the war for purposes of experimenting with combiner nonsense. they're then used to attack the autobots, repeatedly, until the autobots land a lucky shot & get them to decombine. it takes a v long time to figure out how to undo decepticon brainwashing and even longer to repair their altmodes bc they were forced into forms they aren't rly supposed to. they can still combine and they have their Gestalt Link tho

ok but i love this bc 1) it would explain silverbolt's fear of heights/fireflight's cloudcuckoolanding 2) I'M ALWAYS UP FOR GESTALT HORROR AND THE META THEREOFalso at one point i wrote a whole thing about ways to make artificial combiners (back before combiner wars, bc i wanted to figure out how they fit into bayverse whatwith the allspark and such) but it was the neutrals who did it and it was all cross-continuity characters recycled into movieverse so HIGH FIVE but also fight me omg let the aerialbots rest,,,,ALSO.2 the body horror factor of losing one's altmode such an interesting concept and i need therapy/interrogation transcript style fic that explores the myriad of fucked up things these robots
