"completed checklist for today" and it's trying to go through the list of normal human behaviours people expect you to display.

"feelin' stuck between a rock and a home" and it's about deciding if you want to carry on masking and risk burnout, or be seen as weird if you don't

"he's putting on a drum show" and it's the version of yourself that you perform every day.

“even now, even now” and it’s because that behaviour has become so ingrained in you that you don’t even think twice

“he’ll never ever say so” because being that open about it is scary, and it changes how people see you

“he drives fast just to feel it, feel it.” and it’s how these self-soothing behaviours can do more damage than what they help, driving fast or listening to loud music trying to let out that pent up energy

“he drives slow if the song’s not over” and it’s you trying hold on to one more moment of freedom before you get out and the mask goes back on

“I’ve been this way. I want to change.” and it’s about how this cycle of burnout feels inescapable since its cause has become a survival mechanism.

I know they more than likely didn’t write this song about the autistic experience, but that’s exactly how my heart interpreted it.
