Quick and Easy Debit Count
Ever wondered how much water is running loose when you open your tap? Well, let’s do this simple experiment. All you need is a friend, a stopwatch (almost every cellular phone nowadays has this application, right?), and an empty 1000 mL milk carton (e.g. HiLo Kacang Hijau). Got all that ready? Let’s get started!
1. Place the milk carton directly beneath tap mouth. Your buddy should be ready beside you with his stopwatch. The idea is to fill your milk carton with tap water while timing the process.
2. Open the tap fully—and start timing! Make sure that no water is spilled; we’re raising water-awareness here.
3. Stop timing when your milk carton is full. Again, make sure that no water is spilled.
4. Read the number in your stopwatch. That should be the time for your tap to release one liter of fresh water.
5. You can always use that water to water your plant (hope that makes sense) or any other thing, as long as your milk carton is clean. Be creative on how you spend your water!
In my case, my milk carton is full in twenty second. That means, every twenty second my tap is fully turned, a liter of fresh, clean water is poured. How much water is spilled in one minute? Thirty minutes? You can always multiply the time… and that’s a lot of water spilled, right? So, let’s be aware of our tap—and our water.

Bloodline
“And they said Bandung is a cool city.” she said, wiping her sweat.
I stared at her. Correction, at her navy blue kerchief. A color which shine blindingly bright when exposed to extreme sunlight such as now. Staring at it too long, and your eyes hurt.
Suited her perfectly.
“So, what is our next destination?” she asks again, for the fourth time.
My brow furrowed, thinking. “Depends. What do you want to see? Modern art? Heritage? I’m afraid we don’t have much traditional art, unlike Bali.”
“Well then,” she folded her arm, “surprise me.”
Now I lost thought. How can I know her taste? I just met her today! She is a Dutch, a descendant from my late grand grandfather’s younger brother. Back on colonial times, their—our, actually—ancestor sailed to Indonesia for a noble cause of trading (or so my mother said). But, when the Dutch falls, her ancestor was too young to switch nationalities, and was forced to leave. His brother—my mother’s grandfather—was old enough and stay behind in Indonesia. Hence the bloodline of my mother.
Aided by my mother former surname, I began journeying the web. Searching for the lost bloodline. Half of it because of the difference I’m going to acquire; I mean, who else has Dutch ancestor in my class? And the other half because of my mother’s unspoken wish.
“Your ancestor in Netherland, they’re going to renew this bloodline too. But they lost track in Singapore. And so, it’s our job to contact them, to find them.”
And that’s what I’ve been doing until now. Until I found her. A perfect Caucasian named Dewi, born in Netherland and live in Sydney. Supporting my mother’s former surname in her account, she was tall, pale, blonde, blue-eyed, everything accounts for her Caucasian blood. I messaged her, contacted her, asked about things, and she admitted that she is my long-lost sister. And, suddenly she said she wants to visit me in Bandung!
“So? Where to next?”
“Umm…”
