"Wait... what?" Wow, he was being showered in compliments. Ray honestly wasn't used to this at all. Other than Mighty, Ray wasn't used to having anyone else. They had been alone in the woods all of his life. It wasn't like he minded, he loved his older brother, but to be complimented by another person felt... really special... Ray found himself fidgeting with his hands, staring at the ground.
The squirrel's cheeks had definitely turned red. Him and Silver had been working together for a little while now, and he had grown a strong admiration of the hedgehog. He was always so strong, both mentally and physically. It impressed him. To be so strong after losing your entire world to evil beings takes an amazing being, and here Silver was thanking Ray? Oh, did he feel special.
But not as special as he felt when he saw that smile. For the first time, he saw a genuine smile on Silver. It made his heart leap, an ear to ear grin forming on his face. He loved seeing anyone smile, but to see someone who would never truly smile for him, it made him happier than a person could have ever imagined. "I-I'm glad t-t-to have m-met s-s-s-someone l-like you t-t-too!" He blinked. Whoops. There was his stutter.
Ray shook his head to fix that. "Sure." He finally relented on his original intention. "I'd love to eat with you. I couldn't think of a better guy to spend an evening with."
Tumblr media
"Wait…you already gave everyone else something to eat?" Silver fumbled over his words, for once at a complete loss of what to say. He merely stared at the squirrel in shock, his honeyed eyes wide. “Why did you do all of this? I…it’s all so much. too much." No one had ever gone to this extent for his people before. For the kids. For everyone here.
But more importantly, no one had ever gone this far for him.
His ears laid back and he struggled to form the words to thank Ray properly. He even choked up a little. This was new to him. To be offered something without having to give anything in return? It was unthinkable. Unimaginable.
"Ray, I…this is… I mean… Th-thank you. And I mean this sincerely. No one had ever done this kind of thing for me before." He covered his eyes for a moment to recollect himself and to calm down. This wasn’t as simple as just sitting down and eating. This really meant a lot to Silver. For ray to go through the trouble of bringing it all to this realm, and to bring enough not only for silver, but for everyone else.
"You are an amazing person, Ray. I am so glad to have met someone like you." Dropping his hand from his eyes, he offered the squirrel a true smile. A full smile, one that held nothing back. “But as I’ve said. I refuse to eat this alone. So help me? I hear that food always tastes better when you have someone to share it with."

That question was easy to answer. "Nope! All of this is just for you, and I'm going to make sure you finish all of it." He grinned. "Do you think I would have gotten you something without getting everyone else something too? They've already had what I got them. Somehow I think it's the first time they've gotten to eat so much... since they were born." He shrugged, putting his hands on his hips. "Now it's your turn! I'm sure you'll be able to eat all of it!"
Tumblr media
Silver followed Ray and when presented with all the food, he could only blink in stunned silence. When he finally did find his voice, it sounded disbelieving. “Where did you find all of this? Ray… I can’t possibly eat all of this on my own. Surely you know that. This is way too much!" But the smell already had him practically salivating. It smelled heavenly. Like nothing Silver could even imagine.

"Ray… I’ll eat…but can’t we at least share some of it with the others?"

"Good!"
Ray had already set up something elaborate for the hedgehog, brought over from his own world, of course, and he didn't plan on allowing Silver to leave until he had finished everything. He motioned for the other to follow him as he made his way over.
"Here you are!"
agoldensquirrel replied to your post: “You haven’t eaten all day so you’re going to eat right now and I won’t take no for an answer."
"I said you’re eating right now and that’s that." Whoops. Ray wasn’t taking no for an answer.
Silver gave pause then. If he let Ray carry on like this, he was sure it would wind up wasting more of their precious time. So he reluctantly nodded his head. “F-fine. But we have to make it quick. There’s so much we have to do."

As they went on, the squirrel listened to what he was told. It did annoy him just a little, he was being spoken to as if he was some little kid, but... he knew Silver was only out for his safety. Ray eyed the black... whatever it was on the walls. That was certainly not something he wanted in his fur, so he was sure to keep his tail from coming near any of it. After what felt like way too long, they were finally there, and that was when Ray chose to speak up. "Then I'll develop a tolerance!" His arms crossed, his eyebrows furrowing. "How many times do I have to tell you I don't care if it hurts? How many times do I have to repeat myself before you listen? You're going to have to develop a tolerance to my world's air too y'know. Once this one is saved you'll have to live with it." He let a grin take over his face. "'Cause you can come live with me once everyone's saved!"
He wasn't sure whether there was room in his own town for people, but it was a world! Of course there was room for more people! "I can take people to my world, but I dunno where they'd go. There's lots of places to go though! I can bring back food and water too! I just gotta get used to the whole teleporting thing. I'm not used to using that whole energy thing, that's why it happens on accident sometimes, but I can learn!" Now his grin had begun to show off his teeth. "I'm not worried, even if they're mean, I'll be really nice! I know they must have been through a lot. I'm not stayin' away from this zone." The smile softened. "I told you I won't leave you all alone, and I won't." A playful wink, his grin coming back full force. "Like it or not, you're stuck with me!"
Silver glanced over at Ray from over his shoulder and shook his head. “I didn’t learn how to become immune to the affects of poison. I’ve lived in it my whole life, so my body is just…used to it. I am probably sick, but I don’t feel it. I’ve seen what it can do to the others that live here, and it isn’t good. It kills them slowly, sapping away their life. But I assume my body is used to the toxicity of this land, and therefore it doesn’t affect my health. No, if I were to go into a world with fresh air, I might possibly fall ill if I remain there too long. I’m so used to the pollution here, that clean air and water would probably have the same affect as poison to me, temporarily. That’s why I limit myself when I leave this world. I also don’t want my tolerance of the things here to lessen. After all, I live here.”
His ears flicked back as he led Ray deeper into the dark tunnel, the aqua glow of his telekinesis lighting the way. The walls were slick with what looked to be black muck, and Silver avoided touching it as if it were the plague. “I suggest you don’t touch the walls through here. It would take weeks to clean that out of one’s gloves.” Once they came to an opening within the cave, the tunnel leading into a wide berth, he turned to face Ray once more. “I want you to be careful. My people…they take a while to open up to new comers. As much as I would appreciate your help, I would prefer it if you were to stay away from this zone. But if you really do wish to help me, what would make me the happiest, is if you were to take these people to your world. Food and water is appreciated too. But right now, the most important thing is getting everyone out of here.”

All he did was stare. He honestly hadn't cared if he got ill or not, but... you couldn't really help anyone when you were ill, could you? Ray would have never guessed there was poison. It didn't feel like it, and he didn't smell anything, but if Silver claimed it, it must have been the truth. It did cause him curiosity, however. "How come you don't get sick? I bet if you taught me how I'd be able to do it too." The squirrel did follow along. It was now that he regretted storming off earlier, it was actually really cold outside, even with his warm fur. The dark tunnel was a little intimidating, but he stepped in anyway. What choice did he have? "I bet I could bring back clean food and water. ...If I could figure out how to get home. Randomly teleporting somewhere happens sometimes whenever I mess around with my Chaos Emerald, but its never taken me this far away before." He put on a smile. "But we have lots of clean water and some food too! Where I live hasn't been touched by modern technology, so everything is pure and clean!"
Silver glanced around the area they were standing and folded his ears down. He wanted Ray to be safe. That was what mattered. And having him anywhere in this zone was not safe. If the boy remained too long out in the open, it wasn’t just the enemies that would be a danger. The toxins within the air would make him ill over time. And if exposed for too long, it could become fatal. “You can come and go as you please, Ray. But…I don’t want you staying here for long periods. There is no fresh water here. No food. No clean air. right now, you are breathing in poison emissions and miasma. If you stay out here for longer than four to five hours, it could become dangerous to your health.” Silver took Ray’s wrist and led him down the street a ways, to an alcove in a building. Using his power, he removed what looked to be a large, fallen piece of building. But behind it was a gaping hold, one that lead into a dark, long tunnel. “Step inside. I’ll take you to one of the camps. The air underground is cleaner than above ground.”

The reassurance, along with being held, all helped the squirrel to calm down. With a few deep breaths, he was able to stop shaking. He had never imagined that being brave would be so scary. The words were nice to hear. Someone was proud of him. It made him smile. When the hedgehog stepped back, Ray flashed him a bright grin. "I don't think so." His hands went behind his back when he was realized. "I didn't know being brave was so hard. I'm sorry I called you selfish." His grin softened, and his eyes lowered. "But I don't wanna leave you all alone... even knowing how scary it is. I want to help."
Ray's eyes closed. Now he was frowning, his head hanging. "But... if you really want me to go home... I'll go home... I'm really sorry for any trouble I've caused... I hope you're not mad at me..."
Silver was rigid and tense, still prepared for a fight. He was conditioned that way after spending so much time here. But when Ray latched onto him, he let down his guard and blinked a few times. Hesitantly, his arms slipped about the frightened boy and he gave him a reassuring squeeze, fingers patting him soothingly. “Yeah. You did good, Ray.” This situation reminded him of when he would soothe the children after they had experienced something traumatic or woke from a night terror. It wasn’t often, but sometimes Silver would comfort them like this. “You were very brave. Courageous. I’m proud of you.”
Silver stepped back and held Ray at arms length, looking down into his eyes with a grin of his own. “Before long, you’d be able to do better than even me~.” He released Ray and took a step back.

Ears twitched, and he stopped, now just floating in place. There was a strange anxiety of turning around. What if the worms were somehow still there? Ray had never been through this before. Being brave was a lot harder than it sounded when you were put in the face of danger. With a deep breath, he turned around quickly, releasing it when he saw that everything was clear. Still shaking a little, he made his way back to the hedgehog. He was tired. His muscles were aching from moving at such speeds. It was something he wasn't used to doing, so his body wasn't quite prepared for it.
"I told you I would be fine." Ray commented, landing next to Silver, a serious expression on his face. Now he seemed even more like a hero than before. The squirrel never knew he had this strange power. Still, Ray had been scared, and that's why within just a few moments his expression softened, and he quickly attached himself to Silver, his body still shaking as he buried his face in the other's chest. Being brave was hard.
The Worms were immediately drawn to the squirrels flighty movements and fired shots at him, though they missed due to his evasive flying. And while they were preoccupied with Ray, Silver moved in, crushing one of them with a large boulder that had been half-buried just moments before. The Worm evaporated in a puff of black smoke and he turned his attention to the second beast, firing small projectile pieces of shrapnel at it and piercing it’s  hide. It was only moments before the Worm crumpled to the ground and writhed  before bursting into the same black smoke as the other.
Silver’s amber eyes scanned the ground, his ears twitching to and fro, but he couldn’t hear, or feel the last Worm. Had it fled?
“Ray. I think it’s over!” He called out for the squirrel, already walking off in the direction he had sent the boy into. He was shocked the boy could fly so fast. It was a pleasant surprise. Maybe Ray could help him. Not with anything big, of course, but with transporting small supplies from camp to camp quickly.

He didn't know what to make of the expression Silver had given him, but he stood firm anyway. Even if he was going to get yelled at. Internally, he breathed a sigh of relief to see the other nod. Ray wasn't a very fast on his feet. He could run, but not as fast as Mighty or Sonic. He had learned that years ago when the three of them had been trapped on prison island. What he was fast with, was flying, so that's what he did. He turned, facing the direction he was told to run in, but instead of running, he leaped forward, taking to the air. If he focused hard enough, Ray could keep up with a jet while in the air. He wasn't sure whether it had worked, he was a little too nervous to look back. The squirrel needed to stay focused so that he could maintain speed without crashing into anything.
Ray hadn't been put up to something like this in almost ten years, and this time he didn't have Mighty to protect him if he messed up, but he swerved to the left and right as he flew, hoping that would be enough to keep from getting hit by anything.
Silver looked stunned that Ray remained by his side. Even after everything he had told him, had warned him about, the squirrel still stood by him? The ivory hedgehog nodded his head firmly then. “How fast do you run then? I’m not asking you to run away this time, but if you’re fast enough, then run, diagonally, off in that direction.” He motioned toward some crumbling buildings in the distance. “Distract them, and do not, I repeat do not get hit with the shots they fire at you. Dodge them and keep running until you can find cover.” His tone had completely changed. This was his battle tone, the tone he used when he entered his calm mode, the mode where emotions were forgotten and all that mattered was success. “Be careful Ray. Now go!”
Silver rushed out in the opposite direction he had told Ray to go, flinging a few heavy objects at the nearest Worm that had focused on himself. The Worm took the hit, then burrowed underground to find a better place to re-emerge from.

Having his arm grabbed scared him. Ray didn't know this person very well. What if he was just trying to lure him into a trap to hurt him? Well, he wouldn't have any of that! The squirrel was ready to fight back if he had to. He didn't... really know how, he didn't have Mighty's super strength, but that didn't mean he wouldn't try. "I told you!" He tried to yank his arm back. "I'm not going--" That's when he heard just what was happening. Ray defensively put a hand over his face, but there was no doubt that the squirrel would likely be dead if it hadn't been for Silver's protection.
Tumblr media
These worms were nothing like Ray had ever seen. They were even more terrifying than Silver's anger. Still, the squirrel remained brave, glaring at them in spite of his fear. Mighty's words played through his head. "I won't!" He shouted. "I won't just leave you all alone, I told you that! I'll figure out something I can do!" Even though Ray couldn't... think of anything he could do. The self defense he knew wouldn't work on large creatures like this. But he was going to be brave, and try, which was why he remained by Silver's side.
“I care about the safety of everyone on this planet! You are a fool to believe otherwise!” His voice was strained and wavering with emotion. “I do not care what anyone thinks of me. My only goal is to get everyone off of this planet so that they won’t get hurt in the battle to come.” Silver watched with wide eyes as Ray stormed off. He rushed to catch up to the boy and snatched his arm in an iron grip just as they reached the open, unclean air. “S-stop! Get back inside. It isn’t..!”
Too late. A rumbling followed by a loud explosion sounded near the both of them and Silver tightened his grip on Ray’s arm, automatically calling to his telekinetic ability and shielding the boy with his body. His arm darted out and debris shielded them from the initial blast, but it had been too close and shrapnel whizzed by them, dangerously close. Silver hardly felt the small cuts open up on his shoulders, arms and legs, having grown used to such small injuries. When their temporary shelter crumbled away, a large, purple-ish Worm swayed before them. Two others wriggled their way out of the ground behind the first one and Silver narrowed his eyes. “Run, Ray. I can handle this.” Already he had ammunition for his telekinesis to throw at them, thanks to all the debris.

That brought about a more sullen expression, his eyes slowly closing. Of course Ray knew that it was dangerous. He wasn't stupid. He knew it wasn't one of his books, no matter how similar the situation was to one. Ray also knew that it was scary. The prospect of getting killed was scary. But this squirrel was brave. He fought his fears instead of letting them control his decisions. "Mighty told me that even when you're scared, you help someone in need. You don't leave them on their own." Ray's eyes opened again. "And I'm going to listen! I'm not going to leave you by yourself, whether you like it or not, and you can't make me!
Tumblr media
I don't care how dangerous it is! If I want to try and help people then I'm going to do it! I won't just leave people suffering! Stop being so selfish! Blaming yourself for everything is selfish! You don't care about my safety! You care about how you'll feel if something happened to me! You care about how others might perceive you! That's not noble at all!" Now in a huff, he crossed his arms and began storming off, half because he was angry, and half because he didn't want to be seen in tears. The cloth that had been around him dropped to the floor. "Wallow in your self pity all you want, I'm going back outside."
“S-selfish?” Silver blinked, but then lowered his head and nodded. “I guess I am a bit selfish. I apologize for not taking your feelings into consideration.” He lifted his eyes once more. “But my selfishness could possibly save your life. And that, to me, is more important than having you here and the possibility of you getting hurt.” Silver stepped forward and placed a hand on Ray’s shoulder, his eyes narrowing. “I care more for the safety of the people. Not my own. I can handle myself, but I will not risk your life, or anyone else’s for my own sake. Do you understand? It isn’t worth it.” No one’s life was worth it. He would not sacrifice anyone for this. Only himself. To him, his life was forfeit. Everyone he had come to love and care for…they had all died. So, for the people still alive, he would do this. He would fight until his final breath, even if he were doomed to fail.
Tumblr media
“I will not let you be a fool. This may seem glorious to you, and like some story book, but this is my life. Fighting like this is no joke. It’s not a game where you can start over if you fail. If you die here, that’s it. It’s over!”
