The Mystery of Modri Vladis
I’m throwing my hat in the ring here for some theorizing on who Sebastian’s ex-situationship/contractee/lover could be! Or rather, what he could be. I have no idea who he is.
Initially, I thought the most obvious answer might be that he’s one of Undertaker’s reanimated corpses, seeing that they are in a hotel under the undertaker’s thumb and he’s hooked up to a blood infusion of all things. In addition, Sebastian has no recollection of Modri. This could indicate that the Undertaker has manipulated Modri’s cinematic record so that he has faulty memories of Sebastian.
However, I think this is a red herring.

The undertaker specifically mentions the fact that r!Ciel had no “stitches and seams in sight” and could “think and move on his own” which is why r!Ciel is his masterpiece. If we go ahead and take a look at Modri, he can indeed, think and move on his own. He’s even very emotional and not entirely insane or violent? Given the chance he hurts himself instead of overtly attacking Sebastian. Whether he has stitches on his body is yet to be determined, but his face is very much still intact.

I don’t think the undertaker would let such a well-made reanimated corpse roam about so casually out in the open, especially if Modri is going to so brazenly act and actively damage his own body. That’s the reason why the hotel staff stepped in, I guess, but still? They’re probably doing a shit job of it considering that he walked up to Sebastian in broad daylight, yelling, while pulling out a knife.
So… what is he?
He could be a vampire. No, seriously. His last name is Vladis, which bares clear similarities to Vladimir and his first name is Modri, which is also a Slavic name (specifically Czech) and it seems that Vampires in pop culture usually have Slavic roots.
This isn’t the only gothic reference to Modri’s character, however; when we encounter him, he’s wearing a black cassock-esque outfit, a cloth belt, and a stole. This is all priest-like clothing.

Just to confirm this is true, just look at his belt. The belt even has a cross at the bottom, which makes it incredibly reminiscent of a priest’s cincture. In fact, I even found a priest’s stole with almost that exact same design.
And if this wasn’t enough! Just look at his blood infusion stand—it’s a cross!

See, I thought it was just indicative of him being from the Aurora society at first, but looking back at the blood infusion scenes, there is not a single one I could find with a cross-shaped pole. This seems like something Sebastian would’ve noticed and remembered too, which he doesn’t seem to.
But, just having a Slavic name and wearing priest-like clothes doesn’t make you a vampire. Having… fangs does?
You could. Reasonably. Call this a stylistic choice but in every single panel where Modri’s face is the focus, his fangs are visible. I am not kidding. If you go back to 215, you will literally see his sharpened canines every time he speaks while his face is clearly visible.
Guys. Even when he’s not gritting his teeth, you can still see his canines.

So, all this being said, Modri could be a vampire.
But. I really hope that Modri is actually a human-turned-demon who was in a contract with Sebastian because that would be so much more interesting.
I know the kuroshitsuji’s anime season 2 is cursed and should never be talked about again, but! I did think the implications of the ending of season 2 was interesting. Ciel turns into a demon by the end, locking Sebastian into the soul contract forever because he doesn’t have a soul to consume. The manga could absolutely scrap that bit of lore, but it does hang in the air that humans can become demons.
So maybe, with no evidence reflecting, maybe Modri Vladis was a priest who encountered Sebastian a long time ago and struck a deal with him using his blood. Sebastian successfully completed the deal, consuming Modri’s soul and damning him to hell, but! Modri somehow came back to the living, maybe as an imperfect demon, seeking out the help of the undertaker to take revenge on Sebastian. This is obviously a theory with a lot of holes in it, considering that Sebastian doesn’t remember the guy and Modri seems very ill—which brings me back to the undertaker maybe having tampered with Modri’s soul record after his soulless body went to hell.
So all in all, I think Modri is a vampire, but I hope that he’s a priest-turned-demon former contractee who really does know Sebastian and has gotten his head screwed with by the Undertaker. It sort of came back around to him being a reanimated corpse, but ah, well! Gosh, if you want to theorize with me about this please send me a DM.

FYOZAI CRUMBS . YEAAAAAAH BABY

I’ll be real I hate theorizing about bsd these days because it’s usually feels like me overestimating the strength of asagiri’s writing but here goes .!
Atsushi has been . Seeing these hallucinations of Dazai throughout this arc more than once and they’ve always appeared to him a crucial points in time when he’s looking for guidance.
This could literally be any character at this rate who is subtly trying to manipulate Atsushi into doing their bidding . I highly doubt that it’s going to be some critical realization about Dazai’s character though I would be impressed if it was

On Classism, Generational Trauma, and Mel Medarda in Season 1
Note: the composition on this is kind of rambley and redundant . Not checked for grammar or typos I just did this for fun
Sometimes, thoughts about Mel characterization haunts me. I don’t know if it’s just the fandom circles I frequent in, but I just wanted to talk a little about an aspect about her character I don’t see a lot of people discussing. Mel is such a compelling and layered character when you let her be exactly what she is—traumatized, conniving, selfish—and under that, someone who desperately wanted to be kinder than her mother was.

After Mel is Mel Medarda, she is counselor Medarda—an influential and rich overseer of not just Piltover, but also Zaun. For nearly a decade, Mel sits at the top as one of the seven most powerful people in all of Piltover. Make no mistake, that was not an easy feat. Not only is she an exile from her country, she is a foreign delegate—while she has status coming from one of the from the family of one of the most warlords in Noxus—she’s still a stranger in this place. But she’s smart; Mel likely shook the right hands, whispered in the right ears, and invested the right things at the right times.

Unlike Jayce, when he becomes a council member years later, she’s quickly grows savvy with the ways of politics in Piltover. Her natural tendency towards diplomacy as an innocent child quickly evolves with her—whereas Noxus emphasizes violence and black-white morals (even to the extent of capital punishment), Piltover invites Mel’s talent with words and penchance for nonviolence and allows her to flourish.
And what’s popular with the elite of Piltover, Mel quickly learns? More, more, more, more.

During her years working her way up to being a council member and subsequently becoming one, she has to have known about Piltover’s pollution, Zaun’s deep poverty, the Enforcer’s brutality, and the blatant classism that exists between the two cities. However, she can’t afford to take the chance to do the right thing. Advocating for Zaun will neither further her status or please her Piltovan peers in power—Mel’s influential, but not enough that she wouldn’t get shut down for making any real changes to Zaun. She knows that. Mel, like all politicians, didn’t get to the top by being good.
But it goes even deeper than that—Mel comes from a merciless and oppressive country that will execute you for even attempting to have even the slightest disagreement, let alone mistake. The one good thing about Noxus is that it is a meritocratic society—you can work your way up, but that means that those societally considered weak like Mel will always be looked down upon.

Ambessa: “You weakened me! I couldn’t stand the look in your eyes every time I made the decisions—the necessary decisions…”
Noxus never had a place for her—lithe and non-authoritarian. A queen of compromises rather than a fist of violence. Piltover has offered her the “American dream” of working her way up to the top through words.
But here’s where you might think: just because someone wasn’t as bad as they could’ve been doesn’t mean they were good.
In this case—just because a rich and influential piltovan didn’t kill people directly doesn’t mean they were not a passive addition to the suffering of Zaunites.
This is where Mel becomes a deeply understandable character, especially in terms of being a second generation immigrant. She came from a brutally violent and war torn background, where innocents are blatantly killed for being on the opposite side of the war. From a young age, “the weak die and the strong thrive” was burned into her the moment ambessa beheaded a girl in front of her.

She is a result of generational trauma—yes, Piltover’s classism is bad, but in her mind, Noxus was worse. Yes, Mel likely knew her inaction towards Zaun was bad, but in her mind, Ambessa treated those who were “weak” worse.
(And even Ambessa is understandable, to an extent. Her father told her to dislodge any many blades as she could from a corpse filled battle field when she was just 10. she was conditioned that way, and she tried to do the same to Mel. )
This is a mindset that is extremely familiar to immigrant parents who had parents who were ‘worse’ than them. Not saying that it should be this way at all, but like the immigrants who come from violent and war torn countries and come to places like the U.S. and see what opportunity they have and keep their heads down—Mel came to Piltover and decided to focus on herself above everything. While it may not be right in the big picture of things, I understand why she did what she did. Why endanger your position for a situation that was objectively better than your old one?
To her, there is a horrible class divide, but at least people aren’t being (blatantly) executed in front of her where she can see it.
Does that mean that she’s excused from all responsibility? No, but like every character in Arcane, it makes Mel a morally complex and worthwhile character.
If the rest of the council were greedy, stupid, pigs—then she was a self-motivated, brilliant, fox.

Afternote:
People who do nothing but call Mel beautiful and people who don’t appreciate Mel’s character because she’s classist both. Piss me off so much.
Like how Caitlyn is a better character for both being an unrelenting dictator and a bleeding heart, like how Vi is a better character for both lashing out at powder as a child and forgiving Jinx as an adult, like how Jinx is a better character for killing Silco but also desperately missing his guidance, Mel is great character because of both her strengths and flaws. Her classism and manipulation is so much more infinitely interesting existing than not because it tells us about her trauma and vulnerability.
Of course, you don’t have to personally like a characters actions, but this has always been the wrong conversation to have. Characters are not real people that you have to “cancel” or protect from all criticism—they are what they are—characters to appreciate or not for their good or bad writing.
Mel would be boring if she didn’t manipulate the council and Jayce. Mel would be boring if she hadn’t been a contributer to Piltover’s classism. But, she would’ve also been boring and a caricature if she had not also despised violence. She would have been boring if she did not desperately wanted to not become the worst of her mother.
Women, especially minority women, are people. They neither deserve to be euthanized of their flaws, or caricatured for their perceived ones.
#mel medarda#arcane#arcane analysis#arcane meta#I do think they really whiffed on her writing in season 2 . I wanted tosee more of her beefing with Ambessa instead of getting stuck#in a hole

Guys I love jayvik and arcane as much as the next schmuck but . Oh god PLEASEEE shut up about it in the noxus cinematic
everytime a champ I recognized showed up I was like . Squealing . Glowsticks and cheering. Oh my god!! Characters I like and have been familiar with for a long time!!! Interpreted in arcane’s art style!!
It was so disheartening to open Twitter super excited to read about people discussing mel, Darius, Katarina, leblanc, and Vladimir but it’s just. 70% people complaining.
And it’s not constructive criticism either?? It’s (mostly arcane fans) pissing about whether characters from Arcane will show up in the new series and I really can’t help but be frustrated, especially by people asking for viktor and Jayce back.
This region is Mel’s story, which is set in an entirely different region, with different plot threads, characters, and presumably themes in the future. Why on earth would viktor randomly pop out of the arcane to make a guest appearance here? People being disappointed, actively dismissing anything noxus-related in the future if it doesn’t involve jayvik makes me so upset.
It’s fine to be annoyed if you don’t see your favorite characters, but absolutely nothing lead us to believe that they’d be showing up again. They had. An entire arc in season 2, which while not perfect, was decently cohesive, which *cannot* be said about nearly all of the female characters in season 2.
Let Mel have her story!! And if you don’t care for any of the new characters that fortiche will work with, there’s no reason to be catty and dismissive when, for all intents and purposes, jayvik is. Finished.
#league of legends#I was SO excited to see mel again#like are you kidding me??#jokes over stop obsessing over yaoi at the expense of female characters

#reblog#it’s really fucked up that people call her beautiful and in the same breath dismiss her as the manipulative conniving woman in the way of#a mlm ship#my one disagreement is that Mel is by no means conquered—she chose love and intimacy#behind her scheming and political machinations Mel genuinely wanted both of what was best for piltover and herself#and she *wanted* Jayce—she let him reciprocate her love for his creativity and compassion#and Jayce? he LOVED her—her intelligence. wiseness. and quiet vulnerability between her sly and measured smiles. ofc he loved her.#whenever someone says that Mel was Jayce’s beard or she only loved him for hextech I think to the scene in season 1 where#Mel confides in Jayce about being an exile from her family and this is the FIRST time we see her vulnerable to anyone in the show and this#is in response to Jayce sharing his own vulnerability; it’s such a painfully sweet scene that shows the emotional intimacy the two share#Jayce is ABSOLUTELY unfair for lashing out at her in season 2#yes; he was paranoid and exhausted but that doesn’t change the fact that while ‘she used him’ he forgets that he used her too#and neither is a particularly bad thing!! it was a MUTUALLY beneficial relationship—that’s not toxic or bad or anything because.#healthy relationships irl. are mutually beneficial#he used her influence as a counselor in order to both fund and advocate for hextech while Mel used Jayce’s technical intelligence and#natural charisma to bolster her standing in Piltover#cemeting her overall goal. carving a place for herself within piltover after being EXILED from her own country#and beyond using each other for their own personal goals they fell in love with each other!! the people beneath the things they were#using each other for!!! but before they had the time to realize that it was too late—the world was straight up ending and their own#personal duties overtook their love for each other#you can like jayvik without dismissing Mel and Jayce’s undeniable importance to each other.
