Thank you for sharing and it makes tons of sense. If you like to indulge me, I'd have more questions on your particular headcanon:
Who has introduced Solas to it? Someone in ancient Arlathan and he simpy carried this coping mechanism with him for millennia? Someone else who is a casual user and simply offered Solas to share the hit? Was it Solas himself who did the maths?
How frequent do you think he uses? To keep a certain level in certain phases, or rather reactionary to his mood?
Do you think someone notices at all? Because Solas is a sneaky bastard who'd be better at hiding than most.
idk that i'll ever explore this in my writing, but honestly, solas as a drug addict means... a lot to me
elfroot/weed, but not just a casual user (which i have written), an actual addict
(pushes my [past] issues onto solas)
(but also it makes SO MUCH SENSE for him....)

i do think the ancient arlathan outfits could be 200% sluttier
#“Mythal had him around just to look pretty”#i mean who could blame her#imagine your second in command is a supermodel who pulls even the most slutty outfits off as if they're haute couture#“Solas your balls” - “I created these myself thank you for noticing! Put a lot of effort in them too”#I'd not mind at all tbh#Solas#Fen'Harel#dragon age

Especially considering she knew Felassan, who was an advisor to her clan and got it killed, that ancient accent of his must have given her whiplash.
Man, Solas talking to Mihris in nothing but elvish after she calls him a flat ear is just excellent. Pettiest, most passive-aggressive man in the world.

Not only that. The child is the grandchild of Flemeth. Born to Morrigan via a ritual taught to her specifically by Flemeth. Kieran was never intended to be Morrigan's, she only ran away with him, hiding.
Meaning, this one soul of an Evanuris - June - was supposed to be deliberately harvested by Mythal. Whatever her intention was with it.
He'd not have a mini aneurysm. He had to be brought back from the dead.
Do you think Solas had a mini aneurysm when learning that the strange kid living in Skyhold named Kieran was born with the essence of an archdemon and thus with part of the soul of one of the Evanuris, the very beings Solas almost destroyed the world to lock away forever

Honestly, Mythal having been the first murdered is surprising when Solas had been right there in front of Elgar'nan before his rebellion.
Or was Solas like a cat with nine lives, somehow escaping suspicious accidents with no more than a scratch on him?
Something I've been thinking about is how Elgar'nan tolerated Solas for so long despite his vengeful nature. I mean, "Elgar'nan" translates to Spirit of Vengeance. And he was Mythal's husband and the king of the Evanuris. And Solas was just this dude his wife brought home one day, who was constantly pining for her and shitting on his plans for world domination. I can't imagine the amount of rage Elgar'nan had to suppress on a daily basis just to get through dinner.
Like, legit imagine if your S/O brought some random home and was like, "this person is going to be my advisor from now on and they are living with us forever." AND THEN this random turns out to be in love with your S/O AND they absolutely hate you and they do everything they can to fuck up any plans you make. At the same time, your S/O is complaining to you about how stubborn and unruly this random is, but they won't let you kick them out and they won't stop taking advice from them and they keep telling you to tone your rage down.
Like, ffs. Props to Elgar'nan for having god-tier coping skills underneath all that seething rage.

I would say: Time. Time and defiance.
Elgar'nan wouldn't just have been a faith, but the faith. He's said to be the First of The First after all, there is no one before him with a bigger claim to the title.
The People had faith in him when he raged his war against the Titans and perhaps then, he still was that. And because the People laid their faith in him, he wished to be the one who gives it. Who listens to their pleas. The one who makes faith something safe, something to be trusted upon. Have faith and all will be well.
Faith guides, but it also leads if enough believe in it. Time evolved Elgar'nan from someone who inspired faith to someone who evoked faith, and then to someone who became the only faith (or at least would have if Mythal hadn't intervened). And because the People wanted to be led by his faith - in his understanding anyway - they also needed to be led.
But what does being elevated by the faith of the masses to someone who's no longer a spirit but a being with emotions and needs? The faith in Elgar'nan is the only way, and so he demands it as he has grown used to it. The People's faith is a comfortable place to be in.
Faith in him becomes power over them. And the taste of that, to not be doubted, to be able to lead without being questioned, may breed incomprehension when the People disagree, or worse, when some turn from his faith.
And then it is time to call them to heed. Elgar'nan had long shifted into tyranny when Solas rebelled. But I do think that someone's defiance against him made him tighten his grip. In turn, there was retaliation, which ended with an even tighter grip.
But these are only my pre-coffee thoughts.
although i prefer to think of elgy as originally a spirit of faith, him being tyranny intrigues me mainly because, if spirits reflect the world, whose tyranny “birthed” him? the maker’s? the titans’? the executors’? simple human nature? something else entirely?
#elgar'nan#dragon age#I absolutely love Bioware's concept of spirits shifting within the range of virtues like justice and vengeance or faith and tyranny
