Mikasa.
Ok, so I get the fact that Kuchel and Carla are both liked and are also the mothers of the most two adored characters in SnK, but I feel like Mikasa’s mom should be on the same level with them. She loved her daughter and did everything a woman could to protect her child. In my opinion she was as brave as the other two.

mikasa’s mother owned a single kimono of dark , crimson silk shot through faintly with peach blossoms & chinese bell flowers - it had been passed down again & again through her family dating back from the very first Asians to arrive on Paradis a century ago. She wore it on her wedding day ; Mr Ackerman was stupefied & enchanted - he had never seen anything more beautiful although he never really understood its significance - just that it was precious to her.
it was kept folded between corn paper in a lacquered trunk , deep in the back of their closet. every now & then Mikasa would beg her mother to bring it out & mrs Ackerman would frown then laugh & unwrap it , watching as small hands ran along the smooth , iridescent fabric.
& she would tell her : one day you will wear this too , when you are to be married ~

Mrs. Ackerman: “Good job, Mikasa. It’s wonderful. This embroidery pattern has been passed down in our family for generations. When you have children of your own, teach it to them.” Mikasa: “How do you get children?” Mrs. Ackerman: “Hmm.. Ask your dad.”

' how did you... meet father ? '
Mrs Ackerman smiled, features softening in reminiscence. ❛ It was autumn… ❜
Otsukimi (お月見) , a festival honoring the year’s harvest. Her mother had weaved sweet alyssum into her tresses , a new dress ( ! ) en-cloaking her blithe , girlish frame. ( Kimono was far too precious for something like this ). She had been set to travel with others into the blue cornfields of the mountains to watch the moon.
But she’d become lost & soon the winding forest paths turned into a mass of silver snakes in the twilight - these mountains were unbeknownst to her completely in both terrain & landscape. It wasn’t until a hand on her shoulder had sent her heart into her mouth that she turned to find a young man , eyes downcast - a young man who’d picked the twigs out of her hair & stammered : ‘ was she lost ? ’
And she’d answered : ‘ No -
not anymore…’
____. . .
Kaori drifted back into the present , breaking from the sweet reverie at the tug of small , impatient fingers -
❛ ….mmm ? He tripped and split his head open after finding me in the woods. ❜

"Say, mom... how do you make a child?" // I'M SORRY. I'M THE WORST. I KNOW
❛ Oh…! ❜
The spoon she’d held clattered into the simmering pot before her. The day had finally come. She turned her head slightly - this warmth spreading in her cheeks was because of the flickering open fire , she was sure.
Where was her husband when she needed him most ?
Running her fingers over her temples , she fixed a tremulous smile onto her face as she looked down into bright , curious eyes.
❛ I-I don’t…remember much. ❜
She watched as Mikasa’s face fell then sighed ruefully , cupping her daughter’s cheek in her palm -
❛ You know the river near our house, sweetie? Well you came floating along on that…inside a, ahem… ❜ She pulled up her shawl , covering her mouth.
❛ Well ! ❜

bc i clearly hate myself... is there something mama ackerman would want mikasa to know, before she died... ? if she had the chance to say a few last words, what would they be ?
*wheezes*
you tryna kill me?
;; she would’ve wanted to tell her - be strong & to live without fear , to not hesitate & to walk unrestrained because in this world all humans were made to be free ; she regrets keeping her closed off & sheltered ( a wall within walls ) even though it was for her own safety -
she would’ve told her to never forget who she was , her people & her history ; i feel like she had a lot of plans to educate Mikasa about her heritage , the tattoo/mark on her wrist being a starting point but there wasn’t enough t i m e...
& more than anything
she would’ve told her she loves her

Following the first King’s new policy , many of the Asians present on the island took to the mountains to escape persecution ; their refusal to cooperate in the royal family’s scheme of ignorance led to them becoming outlaws & they had no choice but to go into something akin to hiding. Another bloodline , the Ackermans were also similarly hunted/ousted & the two bloodlines fell under the scrutiny & hatred of the public , namely in the first half of the century.
It was therefore not unnatural for Kaori & Mr Ackerman to come together ; two young , weary youths , tired of running , looking for refuge only to find it in each other. Before they knew it they were betrothed , then married & then they were blessed with a daughter whom they named Mikasa ~
Kaori found her ties & relations dwindling until she received news of her great uncle’s death - she then realised : she was the Last pure-blooded Asian on Paradis. She knew immediately the position this placed her & her daughter in - whilst her husband could pass for Eldian effortlessly , she & Mikasa would not go as easily undetected. So the Ackermans decided to remain secluded in the mountains of a small , hidden valley - once known for it’s plentiful game.
Here the small family flourished & Mikasa grew into a bright , perceptive young girl who soon began to wonder why there were no other children around her , no other people ; why only father went into town & only then , once every few weeks.
She started asking questions , asking to see the village , the buildings - what was beyond the mountains ? At first , Kaori refused to entertain her queries , trying anyway she could to dissuade the inquisitive child but to no avail - deep down she knew she couldn’t keep her closed off & sheltered forever ~
So at long last she relented & one day when Mikasa was somewhere between the age of eight and nine , she wrapped a bonnet tightly round her daughters head & led her into town to see . And Mikasa was delighted - with the stalls , the bustle , the noisy trot of cart ponies & most of all the children - so many ! But she didn’t dare go near them for she did not quite know how to engage them yet.
Soon Mikasa tired & asked to return home ; she had seen enough for the time being & found that she was , after all , more suited to the quiet of their mountain home. A fretful & distracted Kaori was only too glad to comply , relieved to step back into security.
But.
They had not gone completely unnoticed.
