Title: The Choice
Characters:
Alice - A young woman in her late 20s, struggling with her career.
Max - Alice's best friend, supportive but blunt.
Mr. Harris - Alice's boss, middle-aged, stern but fair.
Scene 1: A Coffee Shop
The scene opens with Alice sitting at a corner table, nervously stirring her coffee. Max enters the coffee shop, spots Alice, and walks over to her.
Max: (sitting down) You look like you’re about to face a firing squad. What’s going on?
Alice: (sighs) I just got an email from Mr. Harris. He wants to see me at 4 PM today. I’m terrified, Max. This could be my last chance at the promotion.
Max: Alice, you've been working your butt off for this. You're good at your job. You deserve this. Don’t let fear decide for you.
Alice: But what if I fail? What if they think I'm not ready?
Max: (grins) You won’t know unless you try. And you know what? You’ve been trying for years. Trust yourself. You’ve got this.
Alice: (hesitates) I don’t know, Max. What if it’s just not meant to be?
Max: You won’t know until you make the choice to go for it. Fear is part of growth. But quitting because of fear? That's not you.
Scene 2: Mr. Harris’s Office
The scene shifts to Mr. Harris’s office. Alice stands outside the door, pacing nervously. She takes a deep breath and knocks.
Mr. Harris: (from inside) Come in.
Alice enters the office. Mr. Harris is sitting behind a desk, looking over some papers. He looks up as she enters.
Mr. Harris: (smiling) Ah, Alice. Please, take a seat.
Alice: (sitting down) Thank you, Mr. Harris.
Mr. Harris: So, Alice, I’ve been going over your work for the last few months, and I must say, I’m impressed. You’ve made a real difference on the team. Your dedication is evident, and I think you’re ready for more responsibility.
Alice: (nervously) I... I’ve been working hard, sir. But... I’m not sure I’m completely ready. I mean, there’s still so much to learn.
Mr. Harris: (pauses, smiles) I admire your humility, but let me tell you something — no one ever feels completely ready. It’s not about perfection. It’s about making the decision to take the next step. And from where I stand, you’ve already made that decision through your hard work.
Alice: (softens, smiles) So… you’re offering me the promotion?
Mr. Harris: Yes. The question is, do you want it?
Alice: (pauses, takes a deep breath) Yes. Yes, I do.
Mr. Harris: Then congratulations, Alice. The position is yours.
Scene 3: Coffee Shop - Later
Alice and Max are sitting at the same table in the coffee shop, Alice smiling widely.
Max: (teasing) So, how did it go? Did they fire you, or did you get the promotion?
Alice: (laughs) I got the promotion, Max. I did it.
Max: I knew you would. So, what’s next for the new boss?
Alice: (pauses, thoughtful) Next? I think I’m going to keep pushing myself, keep learning. And I’ll never let fear stop me again.
Max: That's the spirit. You’ve earned this.
End of Script
Moral of the Story: Fear is a natural part of life, but it’s our choice whether to let it control us or push us toward growth and success. The biggest risks often bring the greatest rewards.
