(via Kayhan Kalhor & Erdal Erzincan: globalFEST 2013 : NPR)
by Anastasia Tsioulcas
The soulful Persian classical virtuoso and composer Kayhan Kalhor has long been interested in creating artistic bridges to other musicians and styles, including in his work with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project and a long-term collaboration with the Indian sitarist Shujaat Khan.
At this year’s edition of globalFEST, Kalhor revived a partnership that initially began about a decade ago with a Turkish master artist, the baglama player Erdal Erzincan. Together, they create beautiful, buoyant and extended improvisations that draw upon the shared connections between Persian and Turkish music, with Erzincan’s baglama (a long-necked plucked lute) in deep and brilliant discourse with Kalhor’s kemancheh, a spiked fiddle alternately bowed in surging, long and lyrical lines or plucked percussively.
Thanks to NPR Music, you can stream Kayhan Kalhor and Erdal Erzincan’s entire concert! Listening now. :)

Iraans film festival:
“Four women from Torgheh, a poverty-stricken tribal village in the north eastern part of Iran, haven’t really got things going for them. Three out of four of their husbands have simply deceived them or taken a second, younger wife without consulting with them first. But instead of complaining, the four women take up their tars, a traditional lute-like instrument, and sing about eternal love and the past glories of their youth. Even when their instruments are confiscated and burnt after a public performance, the women still continue to play, in the intimacy of their own houses, for their children, or in the open fields when herding the sheep. The documentary does show us the stark differences between public and private life, but the women bravely overcome this gap by making clear that no man nor a government can ever take away their music from them.”
smediaint.com:
Four Iranian country women from northern Khorasan, who play doetar and sing, encounter life’s challenges. Although they face several social problems they have a common passion, to release their pain through music. Even though they suffer many social prejudice and segregation on a daily basis the film depicts how music soothes them.

(via Perisan music in the Playhouse by Kayhan Kalhor | The Door to Shangri La)
Kalhor presented a captivating hour-long solo performance of traditional Persian kamencheh music in the Playhouse at Shangri La; it was an evening that none of those who attended will ever forget. Through his music, Kalhor evoked a soulful narrative that incorporated the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean and the chirping of a flock of birds who, apparently entranced by Kalhor’s music, settled in a nearby tree for the duration of his performance.

The Syrian trio Hewar includes Kinan Azmeh (clarinet), Dima Orsho (vocals) and Issam Rafea (oud & vocals). Hewar trio combines traditional Arabic music with jazz, scat and classical music, breaks open traditional genre borders and unifies elements of different musical cultures into a unique and distinctive sound. Hewar is the Arabian word for dialogue and for years now these three musicians have practised this, not just among themselves, but also with varying guests.
This track was performed At the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück 2011 with the legendary Armenian Duduk player Djivan Gasparyan. and Andreas Müller joined the ensemble as guest on the Double Bass.
The recording is dedicated to those people who have lost their lives in Syria in the past year.
“No one was able to express better my anger and sadness than the voice of Dima Orsho and the oud of Issam Rafea on that October day.” Kinan Azmeh
