"Sikoykow bisayo marani kat pusong ko." - Datu Dima (Ikaw ra ang "bisaya" outsider na doul sa kasingkasing ko) pagkadungog nako ani kay kahilakon ko. My heart is bursting with joy at the extraordinary opportunity to meet Datu Dima, a "lalawahon" visionary and a "baylan" faith healer. He does not know how old he is, but I asked him if his children have children too, and so on? And He said yes, so I assume that 4 generations come from him. Datu Dima lives somewhere upstream in the mountain where his home sits. He is the baylan who is so deeply attached to his land and home that he would not leave it. He will only do so if his community needs him, his gifts of healing, spiritual wisdom and knowledge. His presence brings some light to our conversations. He intentionally joined our conversation when one of the leaders told him I was looking for him and wished to have a conversation with him. The last time I saw him that was 3 years ago. When I asked him if I can have a photo again with him, he gleefully agreed. He asked the other tribal leaders if he can borrow "tangkolo" head wear, "bondira" traditional men's top so he can represent their tribe well. For all the outsider that have the privilege to buy their traditional clothing, please wear it with honor and dignity. Those are not just costume or a casual dress. So here's my point! Meet Johnny Boy and his little brother Sony. They travel from Matina Aplaya to the Island on their little boat. Originally their family is from Zamboanga. Both did not know their age or Birthdate. They don't even go to school. What is important to them is to master how to live everyday. How to bring food on the table. They learn how to speak Cebuano, Tagalog and can understand English because they watched movies with their DVD player. I'm pissed off to the senator who trivialises the artistic expression in a culture. Budots are not just a dance, but it's a culture that has become alive. A culture that has become common ground among the people of Davao and it defy social status. Please stop feeling superior. No one is above to one's culture. Feels like life doesn’t seem to be going my way. I have seasons of my life where I felt like everything was out of whack, and I’ve had frustrating days where I just can’t seem to get anything accomplished.
