one of the funniest things about quantum leap is that on their super secret high tech experimental government time travel project al is allowed to smoke wherever he wants. just in the imaging chamber 8-16 hours a day no ashtray no nothing just sucking on that cigar. i guess you can do whatever you want when your brain waves are synced to the guy lost in time and your dna is in the computer that runs the whole joint
#see this is why i said he has a roomba in the imaging chamber#gotta have a way to clean up all that ash#quantum leap

Found that Al Hirschfeld's estate has a bunch of his work online. They don't have everything, since I couldn't find the one from Compulsion I remember seeing when I was doing newspaper research. Tried finding it again on my Tumblr and nada :( But yeah if Hirschfeld made a caricature of you back in the day, you'd made it. Didn't realize he made that poster for Mighty McGurk too!
Top: Kim Middle: "They Who Get Slapped" (men who get slapped by women or a man hitting a woman in various plays, including: Look Back in Anger, Compulsion, Fair Game, Look Homeward Angel, and Rope Dancers.) This is most likely for Dean's role in Compulsion, meaning that's Ina Balin with him. Interesting he seems to be drawn differently here than in the other caricature I saw, though. He was drawn more like Lurch in the other one.
Also, even in caricature, Harry looks like Dean's father:

(from "Marinka," 1945 play he was in)

Something on my mind lately: Dean at political events.
Top row: Dean at fundraiser for Lisa Specht, put on by Don Henley (founded the band Eagles). Oh look there's yet another musician connection. Then Dean with Joy at a rally for Bill Clinton in '92.
Bottom row: Dean wearing a Dukakis button plus him at a Dukakis event. Dukakis was the Democratic opponent to George H. W. Bush.
In his poem, Jack Hirschman said Dean was so angry about Reagan. I doubt Dean liked any successors to Reagan either.
#dean stockwell#i also read that dean said going to Nicaragua was political for him too#can't remember if that's in an interview or from Jack

And on top of that, this was in the script:
I’m still dying at how gay Camikazi Kid is.
To recap:
• a bunch of guys strip down a guy, who isn’t wearing underwear, and then throw him into a dumpster. Except for the dumpster, this sounds like the beginning of a gay orgy porno.
• Al walks in while Sam is getting stripped down and watched him get thrown into the dumpster.
• Al also watches Sam, who at this point is naked except for socks, get dressed again.
• At the end, Sam and Al sing along to a romantic song on the radio, the same one that’s playing when Sam kisses Jill.
• Sam has to look to Al for permission- twice -to kiss the girl.
And Al is plenty bisexual in this episode too, with his commenting on lingerie and the hot girl to go with his hot rod.
#quantum leap#sam/al#i labeled this as being from Star Crossed but from context I think it's from Camikazi Kid

Categories of Quantum Leap episodes:
Well-intentioned social commentary that (usually) hits the mark
Sam having the worst day of his life
Another piece of Al's backstory is revealed; makes him sadder
The writers remembered that Scott Bakula can sing and dance
Sam suddenly finds himself in the midst of a family drama
Random historical figure appearance
Sam is dropped into the most second-hand embarrassment producing situation you've ever seen
I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me (Scott Bakula in drag episodes)
The Spooky Episode (one per season)
Most ace person on the planet Sam Beckett forced to have romantic tension with someone he initially despises

TW: smoking
Some gifs from Checkmate episode S01E03 "The Cyanide Touch". Dean Stockwell plays an extremely intelligent but cocky college student determined to get to the bottom of a classmate's death. His 'the end justifies the means' attitude has Don, Jed, and Dr. Hyatt concerned he'll take things too far.

I guess that's why Al is always called The Observer in scripts...

Rewatching I-Man as part of a project to rewatch all of the DVDs I own, and yeah, I can easily see why this wasn't picked up for a series. The writing is just bad (and so is the acting but that's more fixable), and a superhero whose only power is being able to regenerate doesn't seem that appealing. Unless they planned to put him in more of a spy role?
But yeah, his body absorbing things instead of rejecting them seems like it would've made an interesting episode further down the road. Too bad.

The burger place in the beginning of Camikazi Kid is called Pinky's Burgerland.
Pretty safe bet to say it was based on Pink's Hot Dogs in LA (which was started in 1939).

Rewatching Quantum Leap yet again (up to Star Crossed) and a few thoughts:
* season 1 is so weird compared to the rest. Like, Color of Truth is more QLey than the rest of this season. Sam is a poor lost confused babby, and Al's characterization is a little funky.
* They clearly thought early on that the committee was going to be the B-plot driver of a lot of problems or crises for Al. (Thinking about it, that's almost what 2022 QL did, basically) Did we hear about Weitzman or even the committee again after like... Honeymoon Express? No, the novels don't count here.
* Sam sure leaps into a lot of strange leapers at this point, which works in his favor as a brand-new leaper. We've got the joker and the mostly checked-out ball player in Genesis, and now the horny English lit professor in Star-Crossed. (Yes it still bugs me they didn't cast anyone semi-hot for that part. "But what if the girls were bewitched by his English lit prowess?" Nah, I have a degree in English, that doesn't fly with me.)

What are your thoughts on the last years with Carol and then going to NZ? I watched an interview where he talks about being “very happily married” to his wife Carol but it doesn’t seem like they were ever legally wed. I get the impression she was kicked out of his house (by Joy maybe?) after he had a stroke.
That about sums it up. They definitely were not legally married and my impression is that Dean’s friends/family were either unaware of or not happy about his situation in Taos. He did seem happy with her from what we see in interviews though.
#dean stockwell#his last years were a bit messy frankly#I have so many questions I’ll never get the answer to
