Charles Rowland, Edwin Payne, and Monty Finch (Zombie AU: Chapter 2)
And despite the fact that it's bad for them, Monty wants to be kept by them more than anything else.
It is not a want born out of an absence of knowledge. A want born out of naivety.
Monty knows what it's like to be chained up. To be kept like an animal, nothing more than a starving beast.
But Charles and Edwin do not poke him and prod him and shock him like his mother did. They do not treat him like an animal, like livestock.
They treat him as they've always treated him, with respect and dignity and well…
It's not like Monty hasn't noticed the way that they're just a little bit more feral about keeping him close than they ever were when they were all human and alive.
-aletterinthenameofsanity, please don't go, i'll eat your whole (i love you so)
Something in the way you're looking through my eyes
Don't know if I'm gonna make it out alive
Fight so dirty, but you love so sweet
Talk so pretty, but your heart got teeth
Late-night devil, put your hands on me
And never, never, never ever let go
-Five Seconds of Summer, Teeth

tossing his bag with enough force to split the wooden poles nearby, charles wants nothing more than to scream; to throw his fists until something breaks, until splinters take him apart and reveal the monster beneath.
he is his father's son, forever shaped by his father's hands, he must be. it's hard to think of himself as anything else when anger starts to feel like a familiar embrace, a familiar rush, a familiar love—when anger starts to run through his every thought like blood.
his father's shadow is long, deep. sometimes charles wonders how he can see in the dark, with only the glow of his own despair to guide him, only the sting of a buckle to keep him from finding the walls and clawing his way out of the chasm of his past.
he sits in the office, and catches glimpses of his father at the desk. he breaks something, and finds his father in the way his hands clench around its pieces. he yells, and the sound of an unraveling belt swings below his words. he blinks, and any room looks at least a little like the basement. he looks at edwin, and wonders how long it will take for him to ruin him beyond repair.
sometimes, when it's dark and cold and there is a familiar sting against his skin, charles wonders if his soul was collected in that attic after all, if he has become nothing more than a hollow shell for his father's lessons to be unleashed into the world; a way for his father to stretch his bloodied fingers further than their little house. sometimes, it feels like he is in the passenger seat of his own mind even after death, forever made to watch his father jerk the leather wrapped wheel with furious hands and force him into the ditch filled with thorn bushes and shattered glass.
he feels like a chained dog, trained with tight leashes and tighter fists until bark and bite are the only things left inside. truly his father's son, a rowland through and through, tainted forever by a legacy of bruised knuckles and broken toys.
but fuck, he thinks with furious tears spilling despite his wishes, he doesn't want to be.
(edwin smiles like there is nothing more ridiculous than charles being like his father. edwin flips up his collar, tilts his head, and calls him the best person he knows. edwin melts into his hug like it's a sanctuary, not a prison meant to escape. edwin stays.
charles wishes he could see himself in whatever light that makes edwin look at him like this, like something precious to be cherished, something to be kept around. he holds on tighter and renews his oath to never leave, even with the fury forever licking up his insides. he'll do anything to stay.)

RANT: THE AO3 AI GENERATED FICS FOR THE TOP 100
Not something I would usually post here on this blog but here we go!
Tumblr media
It has been revealed that one of the ships got it onto the top 100 ships on AO3 by someone utilizing ai generated fics to spam the tag.
It's honestly disheartening that people (usually my age) view AO3 as a fucking social media app rather than an archive where hundreds if not thousands of user dedicate their writing to something they genuinely love.
Polluting the website with ai generated fanfics that no one will read nor was written by anyone is truly a new low and for what??? A ship??? Are we DEADASS??? You only care about the fuckass numbers that shouldn't mean THAT much to you, it's honestly pathetic and sad.
Seriously I get you for loving a ship so much but are we really going to dickride the living shit out of a phony ass bot to make u a gazillion amount of fanfics just for some ranking. It's actually frying me omfg what the fuck.
Thanks for reading my rant I suppose, normally I would be a lot vulgar when it comes to my rants but I'm just honestly heartbroken that someone did this

rewatching the attic scene for reasons and seeing the Night Nurse smile at these two boys meeting, then immediately agree to let Charles go to Hell to save Edwin, arguably the biggest ally move in the season. when Niko decides to play matchmaker, Jenny ends up getting nearly murdered and a crow boy does get murdered, when the Night Nurse decides to captain a ship, we get a Hell rescue and one of the best love confessions ever. Night Nurse for #1 Ally

Re-railing your blog tell me about your favorite DBDA character/moment/detail 😋🫶
ur my fav person now congratulicitations!!
my favorite moment in dbda -my favorite shot in the whole show- is in episode one, when edwin falls into esther's snake lare.
Tumblr media
this shot goes so hard. for literally no reason. it goes all quiet here. it's this moment of utter stillness and nothingness between moments of dialogue and action. it feels like, well, death.
there is a single spotlight on edwin, the light from the hatch at top. charles is at top. edwin is free-falling through endless blackness and the only light is charles, at the very top. dust swirls around edwin as if the air itself is solid and he is disrupting it. we are far away -helpless observers- unable to do anything but watch. we are forced into the position of audience as edwin is forced into the position of victim. his face is obscured by darkness, his very identity consumed by the emptiness of the shot. yet he is center frame, demanding your attention. you cannot escape him anymore than he can escape the darkness. edwin is forced into the perils of unknowingness and you are forced into the depths as well, but removed, unable to touch, only witness the magnitude of nothingness.
i do understand how unhinged of an analysis that is but im right

Art History References for don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away
Aka: guess who's back? Back again?
Love Is In The Bin, Banksy, 2006 & 2018
Monty can't help it. His voice cracks, that thing he calls his heart tearing like a Banksy painting of a girl with a red balloon shredded by her maker.
Tumblr media
Vesuvius In Eruption, with a View over the Islands in the Bay of Naples, Joseph Wright of Darby, 1773-1775
Monty is Joseph Wright of Darby’s Vesuvius in Eruption, light blasting through clouds of storm and ash, burying the town beneath.
Tumblr media
The Meteor of 1860, Frederic Edwin Church
But Monty can't finish his sentence, the words trickling away as he slips away into slumber. The last glimpse of the waking world is the half-heard, probably imagined, Church-meteor-bright dear god, Charles, Monty can't mean that, can he?
Tumblr media
Madonna With Child, Duccio, 1300-1305
Duccio would look at Monty and laugh. God, any religious painter worth their salt would paint Monty as a sinner, always reaching for the light and failing to touch it.
Tumblr media
Discobolus, Myron, 460-450 B.C. (Roman bronze reproduction, 2nd century A.D.)
“You’ve had a long day. We just want you to relax, love,” Charles says, and Monty nearly bites back that it’s impossible to relax when he is holding his thighs, when he is having to concentrate, when he is having to deal with that fucking pet name that hits like Myron's fucking discus because he knows that Charles throws it around without meaning it.
Tumblr media
Springtime, Pierre Auguste Cot, 1873
And Monty understands why when Pierre Auguste Cot painted lovers, he painted them in springtime, sunlight settling across them lost in each other as the world makes itself new around them.

“Come out from behind there,” Charles orders, raising his cricket bat up, “Or I’ll smash your head. You want him, you’ll have to get through me first.”
If the person doesn’t respond, they’re a zombie. Hit first and ask questions later. Edwin’s survival cannot be risked.
But if it’s a person?
Charles failed to save Niko. He failed to save Crystal. He failed to save Monty.
If there is just one person he can keep safe, then he will reach for life with everything that he has.
Two pale, skinny hands slowly emerge from the top of the shelf- a good idea, a human idea- and then the person steps around the shelves, ragged clothing emerging first, followed by-
Charles’ bat clatters to the ground as he runs forward, so desperate he half-staggers on his way, nearly slipping in his own shoes.
Because it’s impossible. A goddamn miracle.
And yet, there Monty is, nearly as skeletal as a zombie.
(On the other side of the zombie apocalypse, Charles and Edwin are the last survivors of their friends- and maybe of the entire world.
But when desperation kicks in after an injury, they chance a trip to the store, where they find that there might be a shot at hope in a dead world.)

not a dream
sometimes I go on a Wikipedia rabbit hole
I hear about a historical figure, a royal, a warrior, an artist or someone completely else and then I can spend hours reading up about them and then following the line of their female descendants as far as it can get me
the goal is to find out someone who has descendants in this day and age and it makes me exceptionally happy when that happens
usually I also save cool art of said daughters, granddaughters etc.
like these
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if I run out of female descendants, I then find a niece of theirs (follow the line of youngest brother usually)
I can go like this for hours
these are some images I saved from my latest drift
I know so many strange facts about random historical women lol

Writing Notes: Clothing Textures
Tumblr media
When you think of textured clothing, you might imagine a scratchy wool sweater or a soft fur coat, but every clothing item has some kind of texture. The texture of fabric is often determined by the type of weave, so it’s a good idea to get to know the 3 major weave types:
Twill: The distinguishing characteristic of the twill weave is its diagonal rib pattern. Twill weaves have a distinct, often dark-colored front side (called the wale) and a lighter back. Twill has high thread count, which means that the fabric is opaque, thick, and durable, making it perfect for chinos, upholstery, and bed linens. Denim is a twill weave fabric, as are tweed and houndstooth.
Satin weave: The satin weave creates a fabric that is shiny, soft, and elastic with a beautiful drape. Satin fabric has a lustrous surface on one side and a dull, matte surface on the other side. Satin is perfect for haute couture-style dresses and clutches.
Plain weave: Plain weave fabrics, including canvas, taffeta, and muslin, are made by overlapping the warp and weft (vertical and horizontal threads) at right angles. This forms a criss-cross pattern that looks the same on both sides of the fabric.
Common Fabric Textures
The types of fabric you’ll encounter when looking for different textures include:
Denim is a strong cotton fabric with a twill weave that gives it a subtle diagonal ribbing pattern. The diagonal ribbing is what makes denim fabric different from canvas or cotton duck, which are also sturdy, woven cotton fabrics.
Broadcloth is a plain-weave fabric that is traditionally woven from thick wool yarn—the fibres of which felt together as the cloth is made. Broadcloth is sturdy, stiff, and resistant to wind and water.
Seersucker is a type of thin cotton cloth. The way it is woven causes the threads to pucker and bunch, creating crinkles. Seersucker often comes in narrow white and blue stripes and is popular in summer fashion.
Corduroy is a soft, durable fabric. It is distinctive for the tufted cords—called “wales”—that run in parallel along its surface. Corduroy is typically made from cotton, but it can also be made from wool.
Leather is any fabric that is made from animal hides or skin, with cowhide being the most popular.
Suede is a type of leather made from the soft underside of an animal skin. It is softer, thinner, and more delicate than traditional full-grain leather. Suede is ideal for footwear, jackets, and accessories like belts and bags.
Brocade is a particular style of jacquard fabric that uses additional threads to create a raised pattern, resulting in an embossed or embroidered effect. Due to the technique used to make it, brocade fabric is not reversible, and it may appear rough or unfinished on the underside.
Silk is a natural fiber produced by the silkworm. Silk is incredibly durable, with a shine and softness that are unmatched. Silk fabric is used for formal attire and accessories like pocket squares.
Cashmere is a type of fabric made from the wool of cashmere goats and pashmina goats. Cashmere is a natural fiber with an extremely soft feel and great insulation. Cashmere is significantly warmer and lighter than cloth made from sheep’s wool. Often, cashmere is blended with other types of wool, like merino, to give it added weight, since cashmere fibers are very fine and thin.
Jersey is a soft, stretchy knit fabric that was originally made from wool. Today, jersey is also made from cotton, cotton blends, and synthetic fibers. The fabric is usually light-to-medium weight and is used for a variety of cotton clothing items, such as T-shirts.
Flannel is a soft woven fabric typically made from cotton. It is a common material for plaid shirts.
How to Mix and Match Clothing Textures
Texture is an easy way to add visual interest to an outfit. By layering different textures, you can create a distinct look.
Identify neutral textures. Mixing and matching textures is similar to mixing and matching patterns and prints. In the same way that certain classic prints appear neutral, simple textures can serve as a neutral base for wilder textures. Denim, cotton fabric, leather, and suede are some of the most basic textures that play well with other textures. Neutral textures that are smaller and less visible to the naked eye—like merino wool—pair well with more attention-grabbing textures.
Consider a texture’s typical context. Textures evoke specific moods. Silk lends a luxurious vibe to any outfit. A plaid flannel shirt can look cozy with corduroy, but it becomes more serious when paired with a black leather jacket. Denim is a casual texture you can use to dress down other fabrics: Pair a satin tank with jeans—rather than something like brushed wool trousers—for a relaxed yet stylish look. Think about the context in which you might wear a particular material, then pair that material with other textures to subvert expectations.
Mix textures, match colors. Sticking to a more limited color palette will give you free range to play with different kinds of textures. That doesn’t mean you have to dress in monochrome: You can use neutral colors to anchor your look, or choose two or three solid colors that work together.
