You have to read this Dostoyevsky novel
It's called "Crime in Tobolsk", it's 500 pages long and not many people know about it. It was never translated to any language, so I had to read it using Google Translate.
The main character is called Alexander Petrovich Efremov, the son of an aristocratic family who was raised by monks. In the monastery he becomes an atheist and secretly reads romantic literature, to which he strongly relates.
At the age of 22, he comes out of the monastery to reclaim his inheritance and become rich and powerful to prepare himself for something big. While he's living like a poor man, he engages in scandalous behaviour and degrades himself. This is how he meets Zinaida Ivanovna Denisova, a 30 year old widow who finds him freezing at her door. She takes him in and cares for him despite the impropriety of it.
Efremov is struck by her beauty, but instead of acting corteously, he goes down on his knees on the floor and acts like he's inferior to her. It causes a strange impression on her, but she's impressed by his daring attitude. Little does Efremov know that this woman is connected somehow to the reason why his father keeps delaying his inheritance, and why he was sent to the monastery when he was just a boy.
The story really gets going when a girl with a limp called Katenka drags herself to the Church as he's going out. Katenka seems to recognize him and she knows Zinaida. Tragedy appears in the horizon as Efremov starts to get an idea of the connection between Zinaida, his indebted father, and the financial issues plaguing his family.
Efremov gets involved in a love triangle and becomes friends with his new step- brother, Vasily, who welcomes him warmly back into the family, unaware of the terrible fate and the suffering that awaits both of them.
Other characters are the French servant Albert, Kulikov, a member of the intelligentsia and another friend of Efremov, Anna Efremova, who is Vasily's mother, Leonid Leonidov, Katenka's guardian who seems to be involved in suspicious business, the Alfensky family, and one of the most fascinating characters, Polina Fyodorovna, who is Vasily's fiancé.
Truly it's a shame that there aren't any fanworks or essays of this excellent novel and I hope more people know about it or know that someone else has read it!
