The Five Stages of Human Decomposition
Tumblr media
1. Fresh
As soon as the person dies, the body begins to cool. Without blood and oxygen flow, muscular tissues become rigid and blood begins to pool. Bacteria and microbes begin to break down the cells and tissues. At the end of this stage blowflies and flesh, flies arrive to lay eggs.
2. Bloat (autolysis)
As bacteria multiply they produce gasses which bloat the body. These gasses build up pressure in the body and push fluids out through natural openings. If insects are present, maggots hatch and feed resulting in the skin slipping, hair detaching and surface rupturing which creates additional openings for insect activity and bacteria. The gasses and fluids cause the body to give off a strong smell.
3. Active decay (putrefaction)
Insects and bacteria cause loss in body mass and liquids are released into the surrounding environment. The highest number of insects are present and feed on the fluids. This stage ends when the maggots leave the body.
4. Advanced decay
Most soft tissues have decomposed leaving bones, hair, cartilage, ligaments and some sticky byproducts. Insects able to chew, such as beetles and certain types of flies, arrive and chew on the tougher materials.
5. Skeletonisation
All byproducts of decomposition have dried. Only the skeleton and sometimes the hair is left. Beetles and flies eat any remaining soft materials and mites and moth larvae eat the hair. The bones lighten in colour.
The stages can vary in length depending on conditions such as temperature (generally bodies in warmer environments decay faster), whether the body is buried or exposed to water or air, the bacteria present. Each phase attracts specific insect activity (for example flies first, then beetles) if a body is found within a few weeks the development and age of maggots can be used to estimate the date of death.

Well, well, well, will you look at that? It’s Pride again.
You know the drill by now. It’s June 1, and suddenly everything from banks to big box stores has slapped a rainbow on their logo. Rainbow capitalism knows how to target LGBTQIA+ customers. For exactly 30 days of the year. How quaint.
Of course, it’s nice to make things bright, and colorful, and pretty. But it’s meaningless if that’s all it is.
Pride should be about uplifting and celebrating you, the community. And it should be year-round, not just 8.22% of the year. So, we’re signal-boosting your posts that celebrate, support, and honor all genders and sexualities over here. Follow to keep your dashboard lovely and gay as hell all year round.
And, yes, we’re also making a bit of a fuss right here on @celebrate (apparently, we just can’t help ourselves). So if you’re interested in talking about what Pride means to you or want to celebrate Pride but don’t know how to go about it this year, we made a fun little 30-day Share Your Pride Challenge list. Because you do, in fact, deserve to be celebrated.

The Murder of Sophie Hook
Tumblr media
Sophie Louise Hook was a 7-year-old British girl who lived in Cheshire, UK.
Sophie was on holiday at her uncle's home in Llandudno to celebrate her cousin's birthday, during the day of 29th July 1995, she and her cousins played in a paddling pool in the garden. It is believed she was being watched and her later attacker was seen in the area crouching in the bushes nearby. While the children played they discussed spending the night in the tent in the garden, a conversation that would have been audible to the nearby path and bushes.
That night, Sophie and her cousins slept in the tent outside, her uncle checked on the children at 12.40 am. At 2.30 am, Sophie's cousin woke up, checked the time and saw all the children still sleeping. When the children woke up at around 7.15 am, they found Sophie was missing. She was reported missing at 8.20 am after a search of the garden and surrounding areas.
At 7.10 am that morning the nude body of a young girl had washed up on the beach half a mile away, it was confirmed to be Sophie. An autopsy revealed she had been attacked with 'considerable force.' She had suffered multiple injuries including internal bleeding and had been raped violently. Her death was caused by manual strangulation which had lasted up to three minutes and then her body had been thrown into the sea. Sophie's clothes were not found at the time.
Howard Hughes was born in Llandudno, he had 17 convictions, including for violent offences and indecently assaulting young girls. Previous cases involving children had been dropped by the Crown Prosecution because 'because the victims were so young and could not have given reliable evidence.' Hughes was arrested at his home the day the body was discovered and detained, he was released the next day due to a lack of evidence. Hughes was then rearrested over possession of indecent images of children found in a search of his home. He was later charged with the murder of Sophie Cook.
Hughes' father testified that Hughes had admitted the murder. Another witness saw Hughes carrying a large sack with a naked body in on the night of Sophie's murder, the witness had not previously come forward as he had been in the process of stealing from a garden when it happened. A third witness, a convicted sex offender, testified that Hughes had boasted to him that he would like to 'rape a girl of 4 or 5.'
Hughes was found guilty of the abduction, rape and murder of Sophie Cook. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Harvey Robinson
Tumblr media
Harvey Miguel Robinson is an American serial killer currently on death row. He was only 18-years-old when apprehended and remains one of the youngest serial killers in American history. Robinson’s father was a jazz musician and alcoholic who beat and emotionally abused Robinson’s mother before leaving the family. He was eventually incarcerated for beating his mistress to death. Robinson first killed in August 1992; he was 17-years-old when he murdered Joan Burghardt, a 29-year-old nurse’s aid he had watched undressing through her window. Her body was found in her apartment. She had been raped and brutally murdered. Shortly after the murder, Robinson was arrested for a non-related burglary and served eight months in prison. In June 1993, Robinson killed Charlotte Schmoyer, a 15-year-old student who he saw doing a paper round. Charlotte’s beaten body was found hidden under logs, she had been stabbed 22 times and raped repeatedly. After this second murder, he was pulled over for a speeding violation but allowed to go free and unchecked. One month later, Jessica Jean Fortney, a 47-year-old grandmother, was murdered. She was raped and strangled to death. Robinson had two victims who survived, a 5-year-old girl he stalked for days, raped and choked before leaving her for dead and Denise Sam-Cali. Denise managed to break free from Robinson and escape. Robinson returned to Denise’s home multiple times to ‘finish the job.’ Police used Denise as bait to lure Robinson. When Robinson returned to Denise’s home again, an officer was waiting. A shootout occurred between Robinson and a police officer, Robinson fled but was wounded when he jumped through a glass window to escape. He went to the hospital for treatment for the injuries he sustained and was quickly arrested. DNA evidence linked Robinson to all three murders, he was found guilty. Robinson received three death sentences, two of which have been overturned since. He remains on death row.

Delcia Mejia was only 16 years-old when she was murdered inside her family’s Miami, Florida home on September 17th, 2004. The teen was last seen alive by her family the previous evening. Delcia reportedly said goodnight to her mother Delcia Oliva and stepfather Raul Mata around 11pm on September 16th. Delcia’s mother left for work the following morning around 5:30am, but she did not check on Delcia as she believed she was sleeping and did not want to wake her up. Delcia’s stepfather Raul left for the home around 7:45am—he also said that he did not check on Delcia before he left, but he also assumed she was asleep. Raul returned to their home less than two hours later, around 9:15am. At this time, Raul reportedly discovered Delcia’s body in her bed. She had been stabbed to death.
Over a decade has passed since Delcia’s death, and police have not made any arrests in connection with her murder.  However, a detective working the case has stated that Raul is a suspect in the case. He has been reportedly been “extensively questioned”, but he has never been charged with anything related to the case. However, the detective also stated that they are open to exploring other suspects as well. He explained, “even though common sense dictates that we look at [Raul], I don’t want us to be oblivious to anyone else. I don’t want the people out there to focus all of their attention on Mr. Mata. If there is any bit of information out there that will lead us to another individual, I am all ears” Despite this, though, Raul has still not been ruled out.
A murder weapon was never found, but detectives reportedly have DNA that could lead to a suspect. They are hoping that the advancement in DNA technologies could help them identify the killer. Meanwhile, anyone with information that could help solve Delcia’s case is encouraged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477) .
