“I do get it, though,” said Will softly. “At least, I want to. And I do know what it’s like to know that someone is beyond saving.” He thought of the friends who had died in his arms in battle, and others, like Michael, who had simply never been seen again. The more Will tried to fight death, the more it seemed to follow him.

"Will fell towards Nico as if he had been leaning against the door when it opened. He threw out his arms to catch himself, and before Nico could realize what was happening, the son of Apollo had entangled him in a ferocious bear hug.  'Di immortales! What in Hades happened? Are you trying to kill us?' Will cursed softly into Nico’s hair, still squeezing. "

"Will tried to ignore the weight of Nico’s inert body and hoped his friend would be okay. His healer’s instincts were screaming for him to run far from the Underworld’s waiting room to get the weakened son of Hades some medical care... and some KitKats."

"Percy had told her that demigods had ADHD so they could fight in battles for hours--now, Rachel wondered if mortals had ADHD so they could dance to punk music for hours."

Chapter IV. Nico
Nico couldn't rest even if he wanted to. His hands clutched the armrests of the plush seat, knuckles pale and skeletal. As the son of Hades, he'd always felt most powerful with solid ground beneath his feet—each step a connection to the underworld, to the realm of shadows that were his birthright. But now? Now he was about to be suspended thousands of feet above the earth, completely disconnected from his source of strength.
The engines roared to life, and Nico pressed himself back into his seat. His heart thudded wildly against his ribs. He'd faced down packs of monsters, traversed the depths of Tartarus, stood before Gaia incarnate—but this was entirely new and terrifyingly mortal . This was uncharted territory.
As the plane began to move, a slight tremor ran through his body. The ground beneath them jolted slightly, the wheels rolling faster and faster. Nico's breath caught in his throat. When they lifted off, his stomach did a weird flip, like he'd missed a step on a staircase. For a brief, sickening moment, he thought he might hurl.
But then, they were climbing. Higher and higher, the world dropping away below them. It was a remarkably clear day. Once the jet exited the thin haze of LA’s smog, Nico could see for miles: palm-lined streets stretching to the golden beach, then across the glittering Pacific Ocean. Cars became as tiny as ants crawling around a sandbox beneath them.
"This is... insane," he muttered to himself.
The shadows he normally felt tugging at the edges of his awareness were quiet and dormant. His connection to the earth—that powerful, visceral link to the underground kingdom—seemed to fade with each passing moment. He was disconnected. Suspended in a realm that was neither ground nor sky, neither alive nor dead.
Excitement and terror battled within him. This was nothing like shadow travel, nothing like anything he'd experienced before. The vast expanse below was both terrifying and mesmerizing.

i have this headcanon that percy and rachel reconnect after his first year at new rome. he visits camp half-blood and runs into her. they talk for a few minutes and agree to see a movie together as friends. and within a week. they're back to finding comfort in each other's presence. having inside jokes. and bi-weekly painting sessions. and late might conversations about their hopes and dreams for the future. just a really healthy friendship that they've needed since they were fifteen.

III. Will
"Will leaned his head back against the bench, but he couldn’t sleep. He was indeed exhausted - the cold, horrible thrill of shadow travel, combined with the effort of keeping Nico’s cells in the realm of the living afterward, had sapped all of his energy - but even as he closed his eyes, he could hear Charon calling out numbers and the elevator dinging in the lobby. For a music studio, the room was poorly insulated. Every time the elevator doors opened, Will imagined another soul stepping through, a one way trip to the afterlife.
As Camp Half Blood’s most skilled healer, Will was no stranger to death. He had felt the life force of his friends and comrades slip away under his fingers, his powers falling short in the face of their fading vitality. On the battlefield, death was sudden, brutal, and unforeseeable, like a lightning strike on a sunny day.
But in the recording studio lobby, death was a relentless, steady drumbeat, as regular and indifferent as a metronome, marking time with the steady rhythm of loss. And there was nothing Will could do about it. "

"Actually, she didn’t know who to be angry with. Her mind first went to Zeus. After all, Apollo had been last seen talking to his father, and by the sound of it, the King of the Gods had not looked too happy. Then, of course, Rachel was pissed at Apollo himself: for being selfish and shirking his responsibilities, and for inspiring Octavian to do... whatever it was that he had been doing.
Depressingly, in the end, Rachel found herself furious at the one person who got her into this whole mess in the first place: none other than Percy Jackson.
Everything would be fine if I hadn’t met that stupid boy at the Hoover Dam, Rachel fumed to herself, I would probably have a boyfriend by now and be spending my junior year studying abroad in Paraguay or Vietnam instead of Clarion Ladies Academy. I’d be sneaking out with my mortal friends and worrying about my GPA and trying to pierce my own belly button.
Of course, she knew her life after meeting Percy was more exciting than she could have ever imagined, Paraguay and belly button piercings notwithstanding. There had been times when Rachel felt like the luckiest mortal in the world - allowed to take part in the adventures of demigods. Yet lately, she couldn’t help but feel like her luck had run out. "
