Certain words can change your brain forever and ever so you do have to be very careful about it.

Kudos to fanfiction writers for writing about all the trauma and emotional and mental turmoil that the original content creators dont acknowledge when putting characters through hell

abuse taught me to worry about:
leaving my bedroom
doing anything privately
having no food to eat
being perceived sexually by men
people being secretly mad at me
walking around the house at night
being kicked out
being ridiculed in front of others
having my name called
hidden cameras
my personal belongings being searched or taken
wearing shorts or not wearing bras
being alone with a man (even trusted men)
asking for help
asking for anything (especially if it costs money)
not telling my abuser every tiny thing that happens to me
using public restrooms
getting in a car with my abuser
letting anyone see me have a panic attack
feeling anger
talking about my abuse
relaxing my facial expression
saying “no”
sleeping late
nightmares
people whispering
people yelling
anyone hearing my music or TV
anyone being bothered by me
surprises. any surprises.

Happy couples don’t ruin TV shows. Writers who have no idea how to write for happy couples do.
HAPPY COUPLES DON’T RUIN TV SHOWS. WRITERS WHO HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO WRITE FOR HAPPY COUPLES DO.

I'm trying to write a non binary character (amab), but there's still a few things I can't figure out. Would they still wear (what's commonly considered as) largely masculine clothes, but also wear some makeup to go with it, such as eyeliner and nail polish? Also, during a school prom scene, I keep picturing them in a white dress with veiled sleeves and deep red lipstick. Is this bordering on offensive?
Every nonbinary individual is completely different and has completely different aesthetic preferences. It's not reliant on birth assignment.
Your character would definitely be valid with the presentation you're imagining. Just keep in mind it would be because it's what they want as an individual, not because it's necessarily The Nonbinary Thing.
My general experience is that when I figured out my gender stuff, I did a lot of experimenting with different things I previously felt I wasn't Allowed. After a while you get a broad sense of what you like, but some people have different times they experiment based on when and where they feel safe. And sometimes people's aesthetic sense changes just as anyone's creative vision changes. My gender identity has been somewhat the same over time, but when I was figuring out things 11 years ago it was a different time with different fashion.

Guys, guys listen. This is so important as an artist or any creative. Make time for stupid shit.  Like I mean just draw DUMB things, write nonsense blurbs, sculpt that funny little man.  Its warm up right? But you CANT warm up if you worry about little things like quality and meaning.  You are getting in your own way.  Just do DUMB things in your craft all the time for the hell of it. For the joy of it. Please im begging you.

something about stuff like "reading diversity bingo" puts a bad taste in my mouth. i feel like a lot of readers treat the works of marginalized authors as, like, a chore they have to complete to be Morally Good rather than just... art worth enjoying? i highly encourage all readers to branch out beyond cishet white guy authors but like... if you're doing it because you think you have to rather, than just finding books by a wide range of authors you like, that's something you need to unpack.

from Loneliness: coping with the gap where friends used to be by Olivia Laing for The Guardian
[Text ID: Last night, I ate dinner with my friend Jenny. In real life, on a warm London evening, forking up aubergine from the same plate. We laughed, shared family news, told each other the things we’d been worrying over. At home, alone in my study, they’d felt insurmountable, a sign that something was irredeemably wrong with me. Under the gentle scrutiny of my friend, they diminished to a normal size: just the grit of everyday traffic with other humans. I walked home feeling buoyant, nearly invincible. I need my friends. I bet you need yours.]

"normal guy in an really weird place just chilling" and "weird thing or creature in a really normal place confused as hell" are both extremely funny concepts to me
