"I think what I often see is that people are frightened about fashion. Because it scares them or makes them feel insecure, they just put it down. On the whole, people that may say mean things about our world, I think that's usually because they feel, in some ways, excluded or, you know, not a part of 'the cool group', so as a result they just mock it. Just because you like to put on a beautiful Carolina Herrera dress or a pair of J Brand blue jeans instead of something basic from K-Mart it doesn't mean that you're a dumb person. There is something about fashion that can make people really nervous."

Fictional Fashionista - Serena from Gossip Girl
Tumblr media
                             Serena’s Style
Serena’s sense of style on the show is said to be “inspired by Kate Moss.”  That means that she mixes lots of fashion-forward and vintage pieces together for a look that is “boho chic” with a rocker-chick edge.
Like her style icon Ms. Moss, Serena is not afraid to wear something crazy if she’s in love with it, can throw anything on and make it look effortlessly fabulous, and she will never leave the house without putting a unique spin on her outfit! Of course, Serena’s style is also inspired by the Upper East Side, so there is always an element of classic chic that gets thrown into the mix.
Don’t worry, though.  It’s easy to emulate Serena’s style and look just as fabulous for much less money!  Once you have the basics down, it’s very simple to make that “I just threw this on” look yours.
Well-cut Jackets
Serena has quite a collection of every type of jacket: long, short, cropped, leather, wool and everything in between!  She wears them in every color, too.
If you want to wear a jacket like Serena does, the cut is everything. To find a great jacket like one of Serena’s, check EBay, vintage stores (many of Serena’s are vintage), and even H&M (they have been known to carry some cute ones!)  Then call up your tailor & get it so it fits you right.
Skinny Jeans
A Kate Moss staple, Serena wore skinny jeans in many episodes this season.  Although they are on their way out for Fall, skinny jeans are still Serena’s denim style of choice.  If you have great legs like Blake Lively, show them off with a pair of skinnies before they go out of style!
On the show, Serena wears Seven For All Mankind Skinny Jeans, but if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, stores like Forever 21 and Wet Seal sell quality skinnies for a fraction of the price.
Dresses
Serena has a girly side to her, so we’ve seen her in many dresses throughout the season. She is always wearing dresses that have unexpected details to express her quirky style.
To get this look, try to find dresses that have something unexpected about them: studs, sequins, patterns, or a pretty design.  Serena usually wears mini dresses, so if you have the legs for it, wear one with some black or sparkly tights and fabulous shoes.
Some great places to find trendy dresses that wont break the bank are H&M, Bluefly, and of course Charlotte Russe and Forever 21.
Serena’s Accessories
Serena’s look is all about the details.  While she may just throw on a T-shirt and skinny jeans, you can bet that she’ll make the look fashion-forward and unique by adding lots of fabulous accessories!  Some of her favorites are below:
Boots
Serena wears boots all the time!  She pairs them with skinny jeans & tees, dresses, and even her preppy school uniform.  To buy a pair of Serena’s boots, check out The CW’s Gossip Girl Style Site.
Layered Necklaces
Serena has lots of necklaces, and it seems like she is always wearing one or a few of them!  Her necklaces are usually long, hitting above her belly button, and she layers them for a bohemian look.  If you want to find amazing and unique necklaces at low prices, search for some on Etsy, or EBay, or try making your own! H&M can be great for this kind of thing too.
Bangles
Serena doesn’t wear bangles all the time, but when she does, she uses them to add interest to her simpler outfits.  You can find great inexpensive bangles at places like Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal or, again, H&M.
Wavy, Imperfect Hair
Long, wavy, highlighted-blonde hair is definitely Serena Van Der Woodsen’s signature look.
To get waves like Serena’s, work mousse through damp hair and blow dry with a diffuser attachment while scrunching to bring out your hair’s natural wave!  Next, take a 1.25 or 1.5 inch barrel curling iron and curl your hair in sections, starting with the bottom layers and working your way up your head.  Part of Serena’s style is that her hair is never perfect, and that’s okay! Finish your hair with light hold hairspray, tousle and go.  Bonus points if you add a cute head scarf like Serena’s in the photo below!

Hi! Can you help me? Kristen Stewart attended the Balenciaga Show at Paris Fashion Week, and I loved her look! She wore a yellow jacket, trouser with graphic prints, and really cool footwear. Can you help me with spotting which designer/label she was wearing? Thanks in advance! :)
Hi! Thanks for your question. Kristen was dressed head to toe in Balenciaga, which is fitting because she is an official spokesperson for Balenciaga now (face of their new perfume, Florabotanica).

Celeb Watch - Emma Watson at the London Premiere of her new movie
Unlike most child actors, Emma Watson, 22, has grown up into a beautiful, elegant young woman, and this is clearly reflected in her wardrobe choices. She looked gorgeous as she arrived for the London Premiere of her new movie post Harry Potter - Perks of Being a Wallflower on 26th September,2012. The young starlet opted for a simple yet sexy Christian Dior dress from their Fall 2012 collection. This was teamed with tailored black trousers and Dior pumps, diamond earrings from Boucheron and a silver pendant from Tiffany and Co. Her hair was slicked back in an Old Hollywood style. We love this matured, sophisticated on her, considering she's looking to transform her image from the little Hermione in Harry Potter to much serious and mature character roles.

Fictional Fashionista - Barney Stinson
Barney Stinson, the opportunistic womanizer in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother is pretty epic on the inside, but he also reflects it on the outside. The soul of his character, and an essential part of his wardrobe, is suits. This man always wears suits, rocks silk suit pajamas, and has even composed a song about his favourite type of clothing that goes ‘Nothing suits me like a suit’.
From a crisp, lightweight day suit, to a well accessorized dinner suit, Barney certainly knows what ticks among women. In his own words, ‘A well tailored suit is to women what lingerie is to men.’ He must be one of the best dressed male characters in any sitcom. His love for suits is most evident from his habit of wearing ‘suitjamas’ to bed. It is safe to say that his style is ‘Legen…wait for it…dary…Legendary!’

Personal Style Statement - Purple is the new Black
Colour Inspiration (Purple is the new black):
Inspiration and silhouette:
This season, grab all your jumpers, t-backs, printed shorts and skirts, and your super-hot dresses. It’s time to say adieu to the heat, and bring out your inner colourfull self. Don’t mourn over the heat, rejoice over the celebration of fashion!
Where to buy:
Dress - FOREVER NEW, ASOS
Floral prints are an ideal option for most fashionistas, who like to keep it trendy, and young. The airy floral-printed dress worn by this lass, is the kind you need to beat the October heat, that is doing the rounds these days.
It is very chic and the purple colour, really makes it more alluring. Bold colours really add a quirk to your outfit, and when the weather lets you down, a well coordinated play-suit or dress does the talking.
The tie up around the neck, with the minute floral pattern, has really caught our attention. There is no need to accessorize, and the simple cuts of the dress, well define itself.
Here's what our young fashionista, Sneha Bhatnagar has to say:
ATJ: Who is the celebrity that inspires you?
SB: Firstly, I’m a big fan of Gossip Girl, the television sitcom. I follow Blake Lively’s style. It’s very unique, and the way she carries herself is amazing! She has such naturally wavy hair, and always lets them down. Her messy hairdos look so effortless, and marvelous!  Her clothes, are either bling, or casual, or semi formal, her gorgeous body can make anything look fine.
I love her superior sense of fashion. Its always something that catches my attention. No wonder she is the muse to so many top designers, Christian Louboutin and Karl Lagerfield are a few to name.
I also follow Leighton Meester ( Blair Waldorf), Kate Moss,  Anne Hathaway and Nina Dobrev.
ATJ: Who is your favourite designer?
SB: My favourite designer is Marc Jacobs. I would say that I love everything he makes. Everything!
He has the most appealing sense of style, that he shows in his ensembles. The prints, the texture and the colour of his outfits, make the women crave for more. He makes the most elaborate ensembles, and they always have the best casual appearance. Marc Jacobs is not your average designer. Other designers want to sell you a dress; Jacobs wants to mess with your head.
ATJ : What would you say is your signature style ?
SB: I do not follow one style in particular. I love playing with colours for my outfits, and you’ll see that my wardrobe doesn’t persist to one definite shade of colour. I will have to say that pink, purple and black are colours that enamour me. But the signature style would be something around bandage dresses and high heel shoes , when it comes to parties, and the rest of the time is taken over by my slim-fit denims or pants, t-shirts, lace embroidered tops and to top it all, attractive necklines.

Fictional Fashionista - Blair Waldorf
Tumblr media
Blair’s style is very classic, preppy, and polished. She always looks as if she stepped out of a department store window; her outfit is flawless, and she never has a hair out of place. Blair’s fashion sense is definitely the quintessential upper-east-side stereotype, and she’s not ashamed of it!Blair would never step outside with unwashed hair, wear an outfit that didn’t match, or buy anything “distressed” or “boho chic.”
Dresses & Skirts
For lots of cute dresses, look for designer pieces at ShopBop (their sale section can have some great bargains!), and cheaper dresses at H&M and Charlotte Russe. Look for structured dresses in high-quality materials, with fun details like ruffles and belts to get the Blair look.
Tailored, Classic Pieces
Since she attends an upscale private school, many of Blair’s outfits are school-uniform appropriate. That means she wears lots of collared shirts, simple skirts, and ties. For classic white shirts, shop at Gap.com, and for structured skirts, try Banana Republic or Ann Taylor.
Pops of Color
No matter how subdued Blair’s outfit may be, she always incorporates a pop of color in some way. Whether it’s a bright red trench coat over a navy dress, a technicolor bag, or orange leggings under her school uniform, Blair keeps her look fresh with brights.  Her favorite colors are red (her signature), orange, and yellow.
Girly Details
Blair is a total girly-girl at heart, and because of this, she loves to incorporate feminine touches like lace, bows, and ruffles, into her outfits. For a similar look yourself, Charlotte Russe is known to carry lots of girly pieces that Blair herself would approve of.
Even when Blair is sleeping, she still looks completely chic! A Waldorf doesn’t wear regular flannel pajamas to bed – she sleeps in a designer negligee.  Nordstrom carries lots of negligees that are classy, not trashy, if you want to get one yourself!
Blair’s Accessories
Headbands
From tartan to satin, Blair wears her headbands in every style you can imagine. She usually wears them with her hair down, but occasionally pulls a headband over a sleek bun or ponytail. For lots of cute headbands for cheap, check out Wet Seal.
Tights
In the winter months, Blair’s wardrobe revolves around tons of different pairs of tights. This season, she rocked every shade of tights imaginable, from bright red, to white, gray, and the ever popular black opaque tights.
Blair’s Hairstyles
Blair Waldorf almost always wears her medium length brown hair down in loose waves with lots of volume. These aren’t Serena’s messy curls, though. Blair always looks polished, and her hair is no exception

HUNT for the Celebrity “Gettables” …!
Look 1 – Blake Lively’s Glam Shorts & Blazer
In the look above (which Blake wore out to dinner with Karl Lagerfeld!), she is working a black sequined blazer over black high-waisted shorts, a white button-down with a black bra peeking though, insanely high spectator pumps, and a black clutch. This outfit is so perfect for a summer’s night out on the town, and can seamlessly take you from dinner to a party!
Products: Sequin Blazer- Victoria’s Secret, Shorts- Marui, Blouse- Forever 21, Bra- Need Supply, Shoes- Ami Clubwear, Clutch- Asos
To help you make this look yours, This gorgeous sequined blazer from Victoria’s Secret is comparable to Blake’s. Add some black high-waisted shorts, a low-cut white blouse with a black bra peeking through, and these lace-up oxford booties and voilà! You have a sexy twist on a classic and simple outfit.
Usually pops of colour to basic outfits do the deal, but in this case, the sequins speak so loudly that extra color isn’t needed, aside from the pop of gold on the clutch. Sometimes it’s better to keep things simple and let your standout pieces shine!  Look 2 – Kourtney Kardashian’s Romper & Blazer Combo
Those watching the Kardashian reality shows should know that Kim may be my favorite sister, but I think that Kourtney Kardashian is frequently the best-dressed (and most underrated) of the bunch.
On this week’s episode of Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami, Kourtney wore a silk coral patterned jumpsuit, with a creme blazer, T-strap platforms, a chain-strap bag, and her signature oversized sunglasses. I see this look as a great example of a day-to-night outfit: walk around during the day in the romper with flat sandals, and at night, amp up the glam by throwing the blazer on top and adding heels. Genius!
Products: Blazer- ModCloth, Romper- Urban Outfitters, Shoes- Endless, Bag- Asos, Watch- Zappos, Sunglasses- Endless
This romper works for both day and night because of its proportions; the loose fit of the bottom half makes it appropriate for less casual settings, and the sweet scalloping is a fun detail. A white blazer dresses it up, and is also a total summer 2010 staple that you could wear with anything.
When I first saw Kourtney’s outfit above, I immediately noticed her gold watch– I love the way a watch can instantly make any outfit look more luxurious and expensive. The watch I chose probably costs a lot less then Kourtney’s, but will still give you the same effect. Finally, throw a cute quilted chain-strap bag over your shoulder, add some summery heels and oversize sunglasses, and you’re good to go, doll!

Fictional Fashionista - Barbie
Achieving Barbie’s Seem-less, yet perfect Make-up look:
1 -Use foundation on your skin tone with excellent coverage to make your complexion look as flawless as possible. You may even want to begin with a makeup primer to give your look extra staying power.
3 -Smooth on an eyeshadow base or primer. Apply a heavily pigmented candy-pastel hue from lash line to crease. Over your crease, apply a much darker version of the same color for contrast and definition. For instance, you could choose a sweet lavender as your base color and a vibrant violet as your crease color. Highlight brow bones with a light shimmery pink-gold, also highly pigmented. Blend away hard edges in your eye makeup with an eyeshadow blender brush.
4 -Curl eyelashes and apply lengthening and thickening black mascara. Glue on either fake strip eyelashes or individual lash clusters to your upper lash lines. Find what looks natural but thickens and lengthens the appearance of your natural lashes. For the individual lashes, you can choose to attach them to only the middle or to outer edges of your lash line.
5- Look for a matte-finish liquid eyeliner that complements your eyeshadow colors. Using the example in Step 2, a matte liquid eyeliner in navy would work very well with lavender and violet. If you are uncertain, use a classic black liquid eyeliner. Draw a steady, slightly thick line on your upper eyelid over the base of your fake lashes to make real and false lash lines appear as one. Wing edges out lightly at the ends to give a more dramatic open-eyed effect. Rim lower lash lines with a highly pigmented eyeliner in the candy-colored shade you used as your base eyeshadow.
6 -Find a pink blush that complements your coloring and buff into the apples of your cheeks. Keep your choices riveted to pinks that are more vivid and alive, rather than murky. Steer clear of dull and heavy pinks, such as those that seem diluted with gray or brown. After all, pretty pinks are Barbie's signature color! With a makeup sponge, fade away any edges in your blush to keep color evident, yet as natural as possible
7-   Enhance your lips by lining over your natural lip shape with a highly pigmented lip pencil in a clear, vivid pink. Emphasize your Cupid's bow or draw one on if you don't have one and want one. Fill lips in with the liner followed by matching lipstick. You do not need a bright or dark pink lipstick; what is most important is that you wear an ultra-reflective highly pigmented lip product in a color that suits you and complements the rest of your makeup. You can even select a light shade, as long as your end result has a vinyl-like finish. If needed, dab on some high-shine clear lip gloss over lipstick.
8- Give your skin an even more perfect finish by lightly applying translucent highlighter down the bridge of your nose, in the center of your forehead, on top of your cheekbones and in the middle of your chin. Make sure you use one that suits your coloring and does not overpower the rest of your makeup. Blend so you appear to naturally be glowing from within, or at least seem to have a doll-perfect complexion.
