There’s a city somewhere north of the border where it’s always dusk, and the lights always twinkle. 

This city, somewhere north of the border, might very well not even exist. But as long as we live, and our children and their children and the children of their children do, there will always be stories about the city north of the border. The city of eternal dusk, the city of twinkling lights.

They say this city has walls too high to climb, doors that never open, and, of course, lights that always twinkle. They say it is inhabited by a mysterious people, who have never been seen. Regardless, it is said, in silent whispers on moonless nights, that they have pointed ears, skin smooth and cool like marble, that darkness swirls in their eyes and plants grow in their hair.

I know many stories about the city north of the border. Each family knows different ones, or maybe they are the same, but so changed they have essentially become each their own tale; and each generation knows more than the last. I know more than my mother did, for I know hers, and my father’s; and yet, I know other ones, too. How? I cannot remember. I seem to recall, faintly as if it were a dream, someone whispering them to me under a full moon; but that is absurd. Only on moonless nights do we share stories about the city.
