A Journey to the Next: “Being a HUMSS Student: A Bloody yet Wonderful Fight”

Some people asked me, “Why HUMSS?” I just replied, “ Why not?”. Humanities and Social Sciences, a field where I know I truly belong and the field that molded me on how to be strong.

Hello what’s up readers! This is Althea Lapuz again! From the City of Waterfalls, Iligan City! A 17-year old student of Tomas Cabili National High School, taking Humanities and Social Sciences. So I am writing this blog to share my bloody yet wonderful experiences of being a HUMSS student.

We’ve commonly known that HUMSS is an academic strand, but for me it is not just an academic strand, it is a bloody yet very interesting strand. 

Taking Humanities and Social Sciences gives you a headache everyday. You will face paper works every hour in a day. Analyzing, socializing, communicating and so many “ing” in this field is needed. There we’re times that our instructors would only give us a not so detailed tasks and it is our duty to analyze the directions first before we can proceed to the task.

Since this field talks about Humans, one should behave exactly as human. Others may say that HUMSS is just an easy field because there is no hassle in solving Math problems, but there is a mistake. We may not solving mathematical equations but we are solving human problems. We may not studying mathematical theories but we are studying human errors. Humans are way complicated too.

As I started studying this field, it was so complicated because I don’t have the confidence to speak out in public. It was hard for me at first but as I continue, it boost my confidence and even improved my speaking and communicating skills. 

Everyday is a new learning in HUMSS. As a student taking Humanities and Social Sciences, we are expected to be good at everything. Writing, public speaking, communicating and all other subjects, and it sucks that I’m not even good at public speaking. But I did not quit the battle, I continue and survived, and now I can confidently speak in public with no hassle. 

We have our own perceptions and beliefs unto something. Which is in this field, it is hard for you to stand in your beliefs and perceptions because other students even instructors will challenge you and you’ll ended thinking even deeper in your own perception and even question yourself. But the lesson is, if you stand still in your perceptions, you will learn something that one can use in their everyday life.

The thing that also interests me about this field is you will be writing your own perceptions, you will do a lot of activities or even short films. Teachers expected a lot in HUMSS students because we are expected to be the future film makers, directors, writers and so on. Which really catches my interest because I love writing stories.

Take a look at the dot in a clean white board. Of course you will notice that easily even though it’s just a small dot. The small dot represents the judgement and the space are the good characteristics of Humanities and Social Sciences has. We encounter this almost everyday. Only few notices our creativeness and good deeds because they only focuses in a one small dot. The saddest part of being a HUMSS student is every one will look down, judge, and criticize because of your chosen track. They really thought that taking HUMSS is just an easy game, according to some of my friends, we have no future in this track. And it really sucks, they didn’t even know what’s really behind this track. Just because we are future politicians or debaters, they thought we’ll become dictators and burden in this country. An then they created a mistake, again. Humanities and Social Sciences is the field that will mold a mind thinking about the future of society. 

It is very important to know which or what track you are in your Senior High School. But because sharing is loving, HUMSS is the right track for those who wanted to be who they are. This is Althea, a proud student of Humanities and Social Sciences. HUMSS is the strand, HUMSS is my stand. If you wanna live your life in passion, choose HUMSS!

A Journey to the Next: “Christmas and New Year Sleep-bration”

It is the season to be jolly. It is believed that Christmas is the birth of our King Jesus Christ. That is why most of the Filipino families gather and celebrate.

Just the Christmas day, our block  celebrated a Year-end celebration. We did fun games, ate a lot of foods and enjoyed the "pa-raffle" by our beloved adviser. And the most awaited part of the celebration, we exchanged gifts. I received white t-shirt and a booklet. I was amazed 'cause for the second time I did not received mug, or picture frame or such weird stuffs. The one who received my gift was so glad, she even hugged me 'cause she said she like it. We'll it was just a simple t-shirt that'll surely fits on her body (lol). After the party we decided to go home and rest.

Days before Christmas, I just stayed at home since our family never travel or go to the other places just to celebrate Christmas. Not even visiting our relatives, we just celebrate on our own.My grandmother was always attending the “Simbang Gabi” and even completed it. While me? I just stayed at home, I did not go along with her ‘cause for me, as long as I praise and thank Jesus Christ, there’s no need for me to be at “Simbang Gabi”.

On the third week of December my friends planned to go on a trip. Exactly, last December 19, 2018, we had a trip to Pampam Falls, which is located at the border of Iligan City, barangay Dalipuga. It was such an amazing and adventurous trip because of the road that you have to cross before you finally see the falls. Since the falls was located at the mountain-like place, no vehicle can cross the road. The road was slippery because it was raining. You have to cross the rocks and small rivers to get on the location. I considered it as the most frightening adventure trip because we climbed the big formation of rocks just to arrived the Pampam falls with a cave. 

After an almost hour of walking and climbing, we finally arrived. It was all worth it because of the fresh and cold water that surely you’ll never missed to take a dip. We did not stayed any longer because we still need to go home and the road was though. 

On the 24th day of December, my mother was so busy preparing some foods for the Christmas’ Eve. We did not prepare a lot of foods because we did not have enough budget to spend, and besides we budgeted the money for the New Year’s eve.

Well I don’t have the happiest Christmas Day because I just slept and missed the Christmas Eve. I just checked my phone at 12 midnight and greeted my social media friends a Merry Christmas, ‘cause tbh I really don’t have a good relationship with my family, especially to my mother. 

On the Christmas Day I just lay on my bed, all day long. Nothing to celebrate because I was just alone at the house that time. All were so busy doing businesses. I also did not received any gifts from my ninongs and ninangs, because I also don’t know who are they. Though I did not received any, at least I have my friends who greeted me a Merry Christmas.

After the Christmas day, on the last week of December, my grandmother was so busy searching for fruits to offer for the New Year’s eve. She said that it was already part of the tradition, we have to offer fruits (especially round fruits). My grandmother did not allow us to eat those fruit but since we are so hard-headed, we(me and my cousin) sneaked unto the table and ate some. 

Finally it was the last day of December, same routine. My mother prepared foods then sleep. Yeah, we just slept and missed again the New Year’s eve. At 12 midnight I opened my messenger account and greeted my friends a happy new year. On the next morning, just what happened on the Christmas Day, happened again on the New Year’s day. My friends keep asking me “Why won’t you come out?” I just replied “ I’m tired”. Well, yeah I’m always tired, and my mother don’t let me go out and hang around my friends. I just slept all day long and that’s how I celebrated or should I say SLEEP-brated my Christmas and New Year.

“It is the season to be jolly”--that’s what we always say. Nut in my situation, there’s no way I can be jolly. On Christmas, as long as you’ve thanked those people around you, and even thanked more with our savior Jesus Christ, it is already enough. And in this new year, as long as you’d let go those things that dragging you down, it is already a relief.

        A Journey to the Next: “All About the Beautiful Me”

Hi! My name is Althea Danice Lapuz. I'm a 16 year old highschool girl of Tomas Cabili National High School, taking HUMSS. I am currently living in Iligan City with my grandmother. 

I'm interested in Political Science, music, poems and movies. Political Science really captures my interest because of the happenings in our society today. I really want to be one of the thousand people who wanted to be part of the changes and development of our society. 

My favorite band is ARTTM. I started loving this band since my special friend introduced this to me and started loving their songs. I listened to their music more often during nights because their music calms my mind whenever I started to think of the negative things. Apart from that I also love listening to the songs of some singer/song writers like Ed Sheeran, Moira Dela Torre, Bruno Mars and many more. 

I've been reading poems and started writing when I was in my 8th grade. I have wrote so many poems especially when I'm alone or not in my mood to do things. I'm writing because this is how I express my feelings and thoughts for someone or something. But I don't share my writings to anybody because I had a feeling that they will only laugh and criticize my works. 

Whenever I am alone, movies are my escape. I love watching sci-fi, romance or mystery movies. Watching movies are also one of my friends bonding moment. 

My dream is to study Political Science or law and be one of the government employees. And I hope that in the future, developments will happen. I already joined many activities relatedly to the development campaign of our society such as tree planting, walk for a cost and even I voluntarily give some help to those beggars around the city.

I hate fake people. It is the only thing that really irritates me because if you try to cite the fact that you were so good to them and then after all they're just betraying you. Now that's terrible.
