How selfless and caring Lenore can be…. She always gives people the care she was deprived of, and it kills me. She sees a creepy child, not even being sure if it's really a child, and immediately tries to comfort him.

In short: I think he's a lenabel contemporary. Most likely he died at the very beginning of the 20th century, in the first decade.

Until now all characters whose lifetime are known to us more or less accurately fit into the 20th century. I see no reason for Monty to be an exception. It seems the time gap among the characters is not big enough for they noticed it right away.

The thing is, the phenomenon of the Wild West gradually disappeared in the 20th century. And Monty is a very wild west guy, yes. I don't have specific dates or details, as it was with the other characters, so I'll talk more about the general mood and culture.

Prohibition propaganda had a special grudge against the saloons and diligently shut them down, so I can hardly imagine that a priest would sit so chill in a place like this. I mean at that time Montresor was still in good standing with the law. So I guess prohibition trends haven't gotten here yet.

And yes let's discuss the fact that no one in this damn bar is bothered by a preacher gambling. They make fun of him a little bit, but no one wonders what the hell is going on and they don't question his priesthood just based on this not too godly entertainment.

Well that's the Wild West! They loved gambling there. No one saw anything shameful in this, on the contrary - it was quite respectable (it's not like they have a lot of entertainment alternatives). So the gambling priest fits in quite well.

So although I insist that Monty died in the 20th century, it was clearly before alcohol and gambling became something forbidden in the minds of frontier people.

aaaand okay I said I don't have specific dates or details but maybe I lied a little. Let's talk about bills. These ones from Monty's flashbacks look like silver certificates from the last decade of the 19th century. Issued since 1886.

It doesn't give us much except a lower bound. We don't know how long before his death this flashback takes place, but Montresor looks about the same age as in Nevermore. In any case, bills can be used for quite a long time from the moment of printing so honestly who knows.

I swear I tried to find something about bandoliers and guns, but it looks like the Gold Eyes is using a Peacemaker - the most typical western colt. Not much to say really.

How we know they’re from different time periods? Is it stated by the creators somewhere? I haven’t noticed anything in there backstories that couldn’t have happened at the same time.

Sorry to keep you waiting with this one but here we go with a lot of details!

I'm not sure if the authors confirmed this directly but there are quite a few indications in the comic itself that the characters are from different time periods. Although so far they all fit into the 20th century.

Eulalie has the most direct hints about the years of her life. In the flashback of her death she sings Itsuki lullaby, which was only discovered in 1935.

This also explains why she thinks the Duke`s coin from 1912 is old. The girl comes from the time of the WW2 if not later, of course it's an old coin for her!

Pluto agrees with her, but he doesn't look as impressed. In his flashback we can see a train ticket. The letters L.M.&S.R. at the top stand for London Midland and Scottish Railway, which was built in 1923. Of course the lifetimes of Eula and Pluto may still coincide since the LMS company operated sometime before 1949 but I think the difference in their reactions to the coin is quite telling.

Besides many have pointed out that Pluto's spectre coat is very similar to the uniform of WWI soldiers. I don't think he was at the frontline himself, but maybe his father was.

Another fairly obvious case is Berenice. She uses so much american slang from the roaring 20s that even her compatriots and contemporaries don't always understand her.

Will comes from the 30s, Dust Bowl specifically. The term "black blizzard" usually referred to a dust storms that swept the american prairies during the Great Depression.

Lenore and Annabel are most likely the oldest among the main cast given their surroundings and fashion. It's 1901 on the RnF art. This is not necessarily the year of lenabel death, but it makes sense that this is the approximate time of their life.

I'm not sure about the rest of the characters tbh but I think the above is enough to say that they definitely lived in different time periods. And after all. Look at these ladies and try to tell me that they are from the same decade. Like cmon.

I didn't pay attention to it the first time I read it but now I'm curious what she might remember (especially if we assume that eye glitching only implies flashbacks from life and does not include what is happening at the academy).

The font of the heartbeat sound on the background looks so bloody. It reminds me a bit of the font in the chapters with the possessed Bee. It's not the same, but it's similar because of the blood effect.

I mean, I'm not judging. Between fight-or-flight I always choose freeze too. But it's an interesting contrast to the escape artist Duke and the scared stray cat Pluto, both more of a 'flight'-team.

Keep thinking about this scene in the context of Berenice's possible memory problems.

Imagine that over time she starts to forget about what happened - it's easier for her mind to give up such traumatic memories. At some point Berenice can't even remember why Sterling isn't around anymore.

And Egaeus takes advantage of it, literally gaslighting her.

Berenice has never had control over her life and she has never sought it. She enjoyed spending her days having fun and partying allowing Sterling to take full responsibility but also control over Bee and Egaeus. Even in Sterling's death Berenice is only a witness and Egaeus is the initiator. Similarly in Nevermore she is always the follower and never the leader. She follows other people even when she doesn't like their plans and she's uncomfortable being put in a leadership position.

Is it possible that this behavior is related to her subconscious belief that if she does not obey she will be abandoned? Although it didn't work with Sterling. This may also be due to Bee's fear of being considered madwoman. However this part of her character hadn't been explored much yet and I might have read too deeply.

I think it's ironic that despite their differences Berenice and Will are both the most manageable members of their groups. No wonder they ended up in Montresor`s chains. And what sucks the most is that Berenice got into this shit because she finally took the initiative and responsibility to protect Eulalie.

I like that the wording used by the voices pushes Berenice into her comfort zone, "don't think about the consequences and just do as you're told, let others take the initiative", almost like "if you're not in control of your own life, nothing is really your fault"

This may also explain her addiction to alcohol. Even on the first reading I got hooked on Egaeus` "perfect excuse" line. Sure thing, get involved in an ethically controversial threesome and then kill a man, it's all just drunken frolics.

Right now Berenice doesn't have a sugar daddy or a psychopathic cousin or a bottle of absinthe by her side, but there are damn devil voices that literally push her to stab her friend. And resisting them is much more difficult, and the consequences are much more terrible, and what will Bee do now, again led by someone else straight into the abyss?
