old fic

a journey of a thousand miles by @killabeezish. not only was it written in 2006(!), but it's the first fic killabeez wrote for sam/dean. i first read this last year and stumbled on it again recently and was blown away all over again by how good the characterizations are. some authors were able to tune into the core of sam and dean immediately, and killabeez is one of them.

Groundhog Day by @astolat. I've been meaning to read astolat's (famous) mystery spot fics for a while. idk why i started with the third one, but this was delightful. sam tries to groundhogs-day his way out of the time loop. it doesn't work, but it also does. wonderfully in character, heartbreaking and hopeful.

underdog trope

Technicality by @gracerene. fuck-or-die isn't a trope i normally seek out, but i love when it's done in a unique way, and this is one of them. Excellent dialogue, a perfect Rowena, brothers who stay brothers and work their way around the curse with a technicality. Well written and crazy hot.

rare character/pairing

second language acquisition by @synesindri. gabriel/michael. if that's not a rare pair, idk what is, but you've gotta go to sin for all the angel rare pairs. this one is delightful, gabriel guiding michael through a first time exploration of human intimacy. michael's pov is so wonderfully naive for an all-powerful angel. wonderful, nuanced balance of humor and fluff and tenderness.

feels like rain by @zmediaoutlet. favorite heaven fic (so far). not sappy or saccharine, just a very real, lived-in kind of comfort. the contentment of the everyday.

Hoodie Strings by @zxcide. (extreme) underage. this whole series is a horrific, unflinching look at how childhood incest might develop in a real-world situation. not overly maudlin, just bleak in a compelling way.

Hug The Wire And Pray by @soulless-puppy. currently two weeks old, and written for the bbb. takes a simple concept and elevates it. brilliant opening sentence ("They only fucked when the stakes were high.") !!! surprisingly moving to watch them try and navigate their way to something new. so well-written, with fantastic dialogue & characterisation.

new (to me) author

North of Wednesday by @mollyamory-again. after reading this fic, i want to immediately dive into molllyamory's entire catalog. another mystery spot fic, but instead of dealing with the loop itself, it focuses on the aftermath, which i've never read before. written (i believe) just after the ep aired, it's a perfect (and so desperately needed) coda. dean's simple, immediate relating to what sam's going through ("i get it") breaks my heart.

Matryoshka dolls by @applecrumbledore. a dean/john fic that feels like wincest, flipping between pre-series and s2. perfectly captures the evolution of dean/john's relationship, and the growing toxicity of it. horrific and compelling.

underdog character/pairing

Sculpting the Soul Immaculate by @alwaysthrowsscissors. alastair/dean, which is normally not my bag at all (this may be the only one i've read), but this fic is so horrific, and so viscerally beautiful and poetic in its horrificness, that it's well worth a read. proceed with caution.

outside your fandom

Wake Me Up by @missroserose. stranger things, harringrove + robin. a heartbreakingly genuine story about love and friendship and coming-of-age. sweet and heartfelt and so very uplifting. absolutely works as an original story even if you've never seen ST.

1st/2nd person pov

white dove by @synesindri. a gorgeously written, evocative sam/lucifer (with a side of sam/dean). intimate and seductive, in the og sense of the word.

underrated fave

the ivory of tooth and eye by @zmediaoutlet. a fic i've read 4 or 5 times now, and every time it stuns me with its complexity and subtlety. z takes what could be an obvious trope (sam can read dean's mind) and infuses it with aching loneliness. a brilliant portrait of sam, dean, and dean through sam's eyes. bonus points for unrequited (or semi-unrequited) sam/dean, which is a fave of mine. idk how 'underrated' this is, but it could def use more love.

Desperate Measures by @zxcide. 180k and counting. full disclosure, i'm not caught up. but what i've read so far is a sprawling, gorgeously detailed portrait of pre-series sam and dean. unlike anything i've ever read, it's almost a travelogue in style, following the boys over the course of one summer. i'm wallowing in the details of their lives (mundane to them, abnormal to us) -- the loneliness of their nomadic lifestyle, their ever-growing enmeshment, the sudden shift in their relationship from purely brotherly to something else, the horror/guilt of it and the way they navigate around that. both a character study and a relationship study, and so grounded in detail it feels like you're living it.
