The relieving, yet saddening moment at the end of the day when your classroom is empty... But the floors are a little bit messy and the desks a little eschew because good learning took place here today... "Gregor the Overlander," simple machines creations, and writing narratives about discrimination. Fifth grade has a little bit of everything. Welcome to 5A!

Yesterday, February 27, was the Dominican Independence Day. Yesterday marked one week of my being in the Dominican and my first full weekend in this country. Five teachers, including myself, took a day trip to Sosua, a beach city two hours east of where we all live in Santiago. Never before have I seen water so pristine. You could see mountains in the distance on your left, a rocky outcropping on your right, and sandy beaches between. Kelsey and I shared long conversations pondering The DR way of life, and ate parrotfish for the first time (which was delicious, by the way). Napping, reading, chatting, and swimming made for a fun and relaxing day.

If only every school offered free to and from school transportation… Meanwhile, I will soak up the beautiful sunrise and countryside every morning.

What a crazy adventure these last few days have been! Saturday was a day of travel to my new home for the next 8 weeks: the Dominican Republic. I am here for student teaching and am getting settled into the beautiful, sunny, Spanish-speaking culture.

The Unlikely Candidate for a Christian
Amidst the craziness of student teaching, I have been finishing up a devotional hook by Sheila Walsh, titled: "5 Minutes with Jesus: Making Today Matter." Today's entry caught my attention... The author wrote, "I believe we are on the brink of a true revival, and some of the people who will come pouring through our doors will not look like the perfectly turned-out Sunday school crowd... Everyone you will meet today has two things in common with you: they have been made in the image of God, and they need Jesus." I want to challenge myself this week. (Would you join me?) To demonstrate Christ to those whom I may push you away. Pursue those who may say, "no thanks." No Christ follower is capable of convincing an unbeliever to radically change his ways. But a Christ follower is capable of living in such an intentional way that God would use it to draw others to Himself, others who are on the outskirts...others who seem like the most unlikely candidates to be called Christians. In a class full of mostly Muslim students... In a school where God is not spoken of outrightly as to not offend... In circles of people who are nominal Christians... May the way I live, rather than the persuasion from my mouth, be a welcome invitation for all to pursue the Father. Yes, even the most unlikely of candidates.

No one needs to be told their job is hard. They need to be reminded that it is worthwhile.
