“ Au contraire, [name], I am proving that it is perfectly possible to drive at ninety miles an hour down Oxford Street.”

“ We are pawns in a cosmic chess game placed in a world which we rather enjoy, a world we want to continue enjoying for as long as possible.”

“I don’t reckon it’s allowed, going around setting fire to people. Or people’d be doing it all the time.“

“There seems to be this great sense of…love. I can’t put it any better than that.“

“I’m all for spooky.”

“The last thing we need now is to be killed!“

Don’t ask questions you don’t want to know the answer to.

With anyone else, that’d almost be a confession. An innocent person would have just denied it, and even a guilty person would have lied. But Nicolas was dealing with Kaz, no, with Dirtyhands. The one person who no one could tell when he was bluffing, who took credit for every monstrous deed the rumors claimed he did, who had built a reputation for doing the worst things imaginable and having no limits. It shouldn’t be a shock, but Nic always seemed to forget. 

“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want to know. Did you really threaten and scare a little kid?”

“What? No you’re-” He stops and thinks of everything the Crows have done just in the past week alone. Lying, scheming, fighting, stealing, constantly giving Nic more trouble, and that was just the things he knew of. 

“Ok, maybe just a little.”

Nic: Kaz, I’ve helped you out a few times, I don’t ‘work for you’.

Kaz: If that makes you feel better.

Nic: Alright then, where’s my cut? If I work for you, then you should be paying me right?

Kaz: I’m sorry Officer, I’ve never met you before and we are in no way associated with each other.

Kaz knows that Nic wouldn’t start a fight, but he will finish one and the easiest way to get Nic mad is to say someone got hurt, so anytime someone’s giving kaz trouble he just lies.

Kaz: Oh don’t go to *insert name* street, Jesper got jumped by a couple of Razorgulls earlier, they’re probably still there.

Nic, already mapping out the quickest way there: Ok, thanks for telling me.

Kaz: Gauthier wouldn’t hurt a fly

Nicolas, walking in looking battered and bruised with bloody knuckles, but grinning: Of course not, a fly’s never hurt anyone. The Dime Lions on the other hand.

“He’s not dead is he?” 

He really shouldn’t have to ask that question, but with having a succubus for a roommate, it was always a possibility. There hadn’t been any accidents yet (that he knows of atleast), but he’d rather play safe than sorry. 

“Wait, it looks bad or it is bad?”

“Your death will mean nothing to them.”

“No, I don’t suppose it will.”

Nicolas didn’t need to ask who the ‘them’ would be. Ketterdam, Stadwatch, the Dregs, maybe even Dirtyhands himself. He’s tried to help so many in his few years in the city, but it seems like every problem he fixes, ten more arise the next day. There’s no way for him alone to save a city that didn’t want saving, and his death would just be another one to add to the boats.

“No, my death wouldn’t but I can hope my life, my actions, would. That something, anything I’ve done, has actually helped someone and changed their life for the better.” 

He cracks a smile and gives a short chuckle as he looks back from the city to Kaz, this young kid that Nic’s always be surprised to remember is one of the most feared criminals in Ketterdam. “Besides, I’m sure some of the Barrel bosses will be happy if I’m gone. One less ‘noble’ stadwatch to deal with.”
