Here’s a Buzzfeed quiz on OOO to help us all prepare for Social Object Organic Line. While the project is not focused on OOO, but a more general understanding of New Materialism, every little bit helps!

Social Object Organic Line
Tumblr media
It’s less than a month till the beginning of Social Object Organic Line art the IfAA. October  15 to 19 in Portland, ME: I’ll post the schedule in the next few days.
We hope that you will be able to join us as Jimmy Riordan develops a series of public projects with the Institute for American Art. As the schedule above details, these projects will happen over several days at different times throughout the day. Each of these events will present a different caveat within philosophy, art, social practice, and community engagement. These workshops, talks, screenings, and reading groups are meant to be introductions to the rather dense topic of new materialism, as presented through the fields of phenomenology, science, participation, and critique. We have a lot to discuss, and although Jimmy and I have been doing our research, neither of us is an expert in the breadth of ideas present here. Instead, we are looking to figure it out. Some rhetorical questions we are considering:
What does social practice make?
Is art a hyperobject?
Can you practice philosophy through doing instead of writing?
How can materialist philosophies contribute to social practice/social justice?
How do aesthetics relate to causality?
What does it mean to deanthropocentrize relation based artmaking?

This playlist is comprised of 7 videos presenting social practice and relational art in various lights. The link above will take you to YOUTUBE, where you can better navigate the videos.
The videos included are as follows:

        - Bishop presents the conclusion of her book Artificial Hells.
2. Art Toughtz: Relational Aesthetics
        - Youngman parodies relational art.
3. 2010 interview with Liam Gillick
        - Gillick was one of the artists in Traffic, the 1996 exhibit that introduced
           the term relational art.
4. Art Safari: Relational Art - Is it an ism?
        - A cheesy episode of the BBC’s Art Safari that tries to explain relational
           art.
5. Nato Thompson speaks about art and politics at the 2014 Creative Time Summit.
6. Art Bound: Social Practice
        - Three examples of Southern California social practice.
7. 2012 Art Place America promotional video
        - Though this project is not concerned specifically with the subject of
creative placemaking, this video show how, through socially engaged art,
art making has become entangled in redevelopment, community
           development, and economics.

Letterpress Postcards showing how to make a glove bunny. The final step is a bit unclear, but a search through YouTube will clear up any confusion. I printed these at Zygote with gold ink on brown and white paper for PIX last spring. I still have a few left at my new online store: https://squareup.com/market/rabbit-rabbit-press#_=_

TBT: El Neoliberal Götterdämmerung at Documenta 13. I remember watching this video with Chris Stiegler in the kitchen at Flux Factory a year and a half ago. I just came across it agian this week while researching Graham Harman, OOO and art. Not so relevant to OOO, but weirdly connected as I am working on this New Materialism project with Chris and Graham Harman’s The Third Table was one of the the texts that accompanied Documenta 13.
