Azurid Challenge Day 6: Ocean

This was supposed to be accompanied by a sketch comic of Riddle going into the sea as a mer, but this is already a day late because I was busy with life stuff yesterday, so take this for now.

Azurido Challenge Day 5: Childhood (aka Visiting Your Home, part one)

As Azul walks down the hall, he notices the many photos hung on the wall, starkly contrasting with the almost shiny looking wallpaper. It was impossible not to notice them, massive things almost as tall as the boy leading him through the space. They're family photos, he can tell right off. Each appear to be taken about a year apart, by the look of the child who grows up little by little between each image. It's on the sixth one he notices a shift, tension and unhappy faces. And in the next picture, as well as all the subsequent ones after, the ginger haired man is missing. ...suddenly it makes sense why Riddle never speaks of his father. What a thing to have in common, he thinks.

If you uh, don't mind me adding onto your ramble to make it a discussion I would like to say something! I feel like the important thing to remember with things like character dynamics and behaviors is that they're all interpretive. That's why PI's- that is, personal interpretations- are a thing. The way you understand a character and imagine them acting in certain scenarios isn't gonna be the same how someone else might and there's nothing wrong with that

With Azurid in particular, especially comparing to florid and Jamiazul like you did, I think it's fair that those ships are going to have similar/reflective bahviors within them! They do involve the same couple of people who are going to handle being in a relationship in somewhat similar ways even if the person they're in said relationship with is a different person. Say with Azul pissing Riddle off vs Floyd pissing Riddle off- that's just that the octotrio all three have the "he's so cute I have to bother him" aspect to their personality. They tease and annoy each other affectionately and for fun. They are going to do the same thing to others and have that in common with one another.

And as far as them being silly goes- there's really not a single twst character that doesn't have some kind of silly streak. One of my personal favorite aspects of Azul's character is how his silliness comes out through accidental absurdity (his response to the literal apocalypse was to go "what about the economy????" like. Sir plz) or in that it's instigated by someone else so he ends up bickering/bantering with them (gesturing widely to a lot of his interactions with Jamil and Idia both in GloMas). On the other end of this with Riddle, he likes to try to be serious and strict but truthfully it's not that hard to get a more goofy side out of him. The limitations placed on him from his childhood makes it so his reactions to a lot of new and exciting things default to a level of child like wonder and amazement. Spectral Soirée was really the best example of that, where he gets to try new puzzles and games to the point he gets a bit overexcited and intense about it. Combine these aspects together and you're going to get some fun interactions, which can then be fueled by each of them wanting to see that side of the other's personality and doing certain silly things for a reaction, especially in an established relationship :>

Anyway! My point is that these boys have range and overlaps and you can make them do whatever. Make stuff that makes you happy etc etc

yk something I often worry about when I draw is that I dont get the dynamics right. This is mostly aboutt azurido lol but like... I worry that I dont understand my favorite characters correctly, and what I portray when I draw is actually suitable for someone else.

I keep getting scared that when I draw Azul irritating Riddle that what I'm doing would be more fitting for, say, Azul and Jamil. I KNOW Azul irritates the both of them, but has a different approach and intent, and does it to Riddle on a lesser degree. He's not going to miss his chance, but irritating Riddle is more on... their principles? But I can't make that all come across one picture I draw.

I worry that if/when I draw Azul carrying Riddle, what his reaction should be..? If I dont get it right, I worry that it'll be twisted into something that suits a dynamic like Floyd or Ace's with Riddle. Picking Riddle up ISN'T an action exclusive to Floyd, and Azul has been shown multiple times at this point to be strong, so the idea that he can lift Riddle is perfectly fine... is it something he would do, though?

They're formal and stiff and squabble if they're in a place together for too long because of how different they are, Book 6 is proof of that, but fighting and formal isnt ALL they are. But if I try to make them silly, it feels like tiptoeing a thin line that if I cross, basically says "Dude, you just drew AzulxJamil/FloydxRiddle but pasted Riddle/Azul on top of it."

This gets a lot harder trying to draw them in an established relationship, because I dont want to add a paragraph long footnote that I think Azul would prefer to be intimate with Riddle in private due to his experiences and may let his guard down to relax and be perhaps a smidge silly with his partner. Or that I really, really like it when people draw Riddle being awkward and proper but, to me, around Azul, some of that melts away since he already KNEW Azul beforehand and he used to have some sort of mild (ON PRINCIPALS!!!!) dislike for him- and I'm just describing Floyd and Riddle again, aren't I?? I think Azul would be impulsive and I think he can be if, say, he gets impatient or overexcited in his own way and suddenly grabs Riddle by like. The hand or shoulders and he gets a little more talkative. It's a different type of impulse that Floyd operates on and I dont know how to NOT take precaution on how to keep it from getting muddled.

I'm not good at interpreting characters with words like others are 🥶🥶🥶 when I think of a character, I get a rush of feelings and shapes and ideas and colors, not words free me free me fr
