3rd Space, as in the sociological concept

I was at a student work showcase for a university today and one of the Urban Planning Projects had a discussion of 3rd spaces, and I went with my mom who hadn't heard of the concept of 3rd spaces, so I now have a question

What the fuck do you mean Amtrak has infinite funding, it has one of the smallest operating budgets of any passenger rail agency? And like Amtrak is the only passenger rail company purely because passenger rail isn't financially viable to run without government funding that Amtrak doesn't have, that's why people complain that amtrak doesn't turn a profit. Also Rail is a natural monopoly, the old rail companies weren't competing against each other, they all had monopolies, that's part of why they died, there was so much anti trust legislation to keep them from extorting their customers that when alternatives arrived they couldn't compete. Also Amtrak does have competition, it's called Planes and Private Automobiles!!

Good question, it's a thing that exists but defies a concrete definition, you can see it and say that system is a light rail but there is no real definition of Light Rail beyond the kind of vehicle it uses

Officially Light Rail is a train line that uses LRVs and that's all that makes it special

A cheaper train that serves a local area which is capable of street running but doesn't always and typically runs at grade or elevated, but you really can't tell if a system is a light rail without looking at the vehicles because they have a look

Because it is fascinating how we have a whole class of train that isn't a tram but it can run in the street but it also has dedicated Rights of Way Usually and can even run on elevated tracks but it's also not an elevated metro and like people will call any local train a light rail when it's not

I think it's less beneficial to ask if you know what a concept or idea is instead of asking if you could explain a concept or idea to another person, because being able to explain something to someone else is a very important tool
