Mercury Black

Based on the Roman messenger god Mercury, who also possessed enhanced boots, Mercury grew up in a remote region of Remnant with his father Marcus Black, a notorious for-hire assassin. When Mercury came of age he killed his father in one-on-one combat, impressing Cinder Fall enough to bring the boy aboard as part of her crew.

"Because [Mercury] fights with a kickboxing, break-dancing style, it didn't make sense aesthetically for him to be a 600-pound dude," says Patrick Rodriguez. "[Instead we] designed him as this skinny guy, with a slicked-back look."

Weapon: Talaria

Mercury's legs are mechanical prosthetics below the knee, and end in bullet-firing boots. To use his weapons to their fullest extent, Mercury employs an expressive combat style reflecting breakdancing and Brazilian capoeira. The boots are sometimes loaded with explosive rounds, and Mercury can harness the recoil of his gunshots to propel himself through the air.

Hey i know you ship gauntlets and greaves. what do you think about the whole bumblebee basically becoming canon thing? Would you stop making GnG content if they confirmed that Yang likes girls?

A few things

1. I’m a multi shipper and im a fucking bumblebee fan all the way. Bro i was screaming my head off when they held hands like fuCK ME Up MY SWEET GIRLS. The reason why i don’t really make bb content is because i don’t really feel like it and stuff. idk. I used to write fics in middle school and early high school on my old ff.net account but honestly i never really had fun writing them, even though watching them is how i breathe. 

I enjoy making gng content because it gives me a really easy way to explore mercury and yang as two of my favorite characters in my writing, since their parallels and stuff really help form a foundation for aus and stuff.

2. BISEXUAL PEOPLE eXIST YO!!!! Unless they explicitly say that yang is a lesbian, bumblebee becoming canon will do nothing to disavow other ships of blake or yang. Ships like blacksun or gng are still totes fine because yo being interested in girls doesn’t mean you can’t like dudes. I would be flat out of luck, if that were true, because I just love everyone yowza. Both Yang and Blake have shown at least some interest in dudes, so them becoming canon does nothing to disavow non canon works.

So yeah don’t send hate or anything but i still love gng. I started shipping it knowing it wouldn’t be canon, because tbh shipping is not always about what should be canon at all. That’s actually something thats pretty new in fandom, yo. Like all these dumbass people who care more about ships’ canon status than having fun. I have no hope for gng becoming canon and i really dont want it to be canon because yowza bro that would a) make the fndm hate merc even more and he dont deserve that  and b) make my headcanons seem ooc. Also it would be bad writing. All i really care about for gng is the fics that our lil community makes, and an ACTUAL REMATCH.

I’ve always rooted for either Bumblebee or blacksun, though, in canon. Both ships are really cute, and would really bring some fun stuff to the show! At the moment, I’m on the bumblebee bandwagon. I reAALLYY hope that this isn’t queer baiting, but i doubt that Arryn would be so blatant if we didn’t get at least the START of some sort of relationship. Even if I didn’t ship it, I’d be happy that an lgbt relationship was in the limelight along with things like arkos and renora. They’ve established that lgbt issues aren’t like a thing in remnant so that means they can have a healthy relationship without internalized homophobia and all the stuff that would bog down the plot.

Anyways, I hope that answered your question, man.

One thing I see people overlook about Mercurys backstory is the fact that mercury and Marcus lived alone in the mountains/woods.For 15 years mercury lived with him and most of his human interactions were with Marcus,a alcoholic abuser who did nothing but hurt and steal from him.So yh of course he ended up like how he did he literally didn’t have any other options or opportunities and honestly if merc doesn’t break the abuse cycle or get redeemed by the end I’ll be pissed by the message given out

I’m so glad you brought this up actually!!!!!! I’ve literally been meaning to talk about this for ages. The “he lives in the mountains with his son” line has always raised. Like. Major red flags. Because that makes their home sound VERY secluded. Thus making Marcus the majority—if not the only—source of socialization for Mercury. And ONLY having interactions with your abuser makes for some very skewed world views.

Like, if we’re to assume that most, if not all, of Mercury’s human interaction was with Marcus for most of his life, I’m honestly astounded Mercury is as functional as he is. The fact that he behaves like a relatively normal human being is baffling. I’m sure Marcus taught him how to function outside of fighting more or less, but there’s experiences and lessons you literally cannot learn without ample socialization and interaction.

Tldr uh yeah it’s astounding that anyone could think he should even remotely have enough of a moral compass to take a look at his current actions and go “huh. This is wrong.” Does that make his actions okay? No not really. But does that make it all the more tragic? Absolutely.

Mercury literally doesn’t know anything else. His hesitance to even hear Emerald out on her doubts is a testament of his self riteousness and closed mindedness that are no doubt a result of his upbringing. The only reason he ever had to question Marcus before was the pain he caused Mercury. So since things have been going fairly smoothly since then, who is he to question it?
