Jaonos, the elf paladin of Selune in our DnD campaign, died last week in our game (his player is moving in another town). We were dying against a horde of demons, and Jaonos’ shield transformed into a divine artifact. He was able to use it in exchange of his life to destroy all the demons. So long, Jaonos. You were only the modest son of innkeepers seeking enlightenment… but you found a true answer to your faith at the end.

A recent #HighHopesLowRolls combat encounter in which @bin_witch_illustration forgot that her paladin Hashaan was the only one of us who knew healing magic. ✨ Professional adventures at work right here!
@abd-illustrates
#paladin woes#this is why I try to bring a cleric everywhere#because simply smiting becomes habit and when you need to remember the heals? yeah#half the time the people you need to heal are far away and you don't have any ranged options...#don't forget:#you can't have light if you're not alive

What taking the Oath of the Ancients means
As a Paladin, your first Oaths taken are more general - small steps along your path. An initial commitment to your deity, or to your chosen ideals - to defend, to serve, to uphold, to represent.
When the time comes to choose your deeper Oaths, however, a deep consideration of what they mean long-term is required.
For Ancients paladins, yes, a love of nature is important. Some take the Oaths to Light more literally - serving a deity of the sun, for instance. But the path of the Ancients is not simply that superficial.
Light is necessary for survival - both the outer light of the sun and moon and stars and fire and magic, and the inner light which is our life-force and that which raises our spirits. Within each living being is a flame, a light which must be preserved.
When you take the Oath of the Ancients, you swear to protect all of these lights - the lights within everyone who needs protecting, as well as those who need a friend and companion. You swear to bring that light to those within whom it has died or dimmed - a bright flare in the midst of a dark world. You are the cavalry. You are the hero. They will lean on you, and you must learn to bear that weight, for it is what you have sworn to do.
And that, my friends, is why the Oath of the Ancients also requires you to preserve your own light. The weight of those who lean on you may become too heavy to bear, and begin to smother the light which burns inside of you. You may fall into anxiety, into depression, into constant fear under the pressure of what the Oaths mean. This provision is here to ensure that you are able to take a step back.
The true friends you have made as you protect their lights? They will be there to help ease your burden. Do not be afraid to open up to those you trust. Perhaps they have taken the Oaths themselves, or perhaps they live as though they have. Those are the best people to turn to. Even as you seek to be that person yourself, seek out others with the same calling.
Support each other. Protect the Light. Bring kindness and joy into the world. It’s a treacherous place out there - no matter what realm you live in. Everything we can do to make it better, we should do. Such is the life of a Paladin. Such is the burden of the Ancients.
Let us bear it together, friends. No one should be alone.

@matt-john-andrews asked “Might I ask what style of armor are theese?”
These bottom four images (which I assume are the ones you’re asking about) are versions of the iconic style of Klappvisor Bascinet designed for sport use to provide extra sight, breathing, and style.
Actual Klappvisors looked like this

or for an easier to see interpretation, like this

so as to protect the face more adequately from the many dangers of combat. To my knowledge, Klappvisors styled like those above never existed even in a parade capacity.
