Inktober 2022 No. 30: You Have No Power Over Me . ”Damn, i can never remember that line...” . Sarah finally remembers the line - WHEN IT COUNTS. The clock strikes 13, Jareth tosses the crystal, and reverting to owl form, flies off into the night. One of the greatest female-empowering scenes of the decade! . In previous years I might have tried a big blow-out group shot to end the month, but not this time - I thought this particular moment was one of the most impactful in the entire film, and would make for a great exclamation point at the end of the month. . Inktober 2022 No. 30: Your Dreams . ”Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.” . The Goblin King’s last stand! The Escher room has crumbled away, and Jareth and Sarah face off in a disturbing liminal zone, where Jareth takes on a benevolent demeanor, and a shimmering white fur and feather ensemble in stark contrast to the black and red getup in the scene previous. And he undertakes in some of the most shameless gaslighting we’ve seen yet! . Didn’t I say a new drawing for every costume change? This was a fun challenge, in addition to the facial expression likeness, I also had several different surface textures, a transparent crystal, foreshortening… you name it, I guess. Some portions are more successful than others, as usual, but you get what you get here, warts and all. . An exciting few cuts of Sarah trying to find her brother in the opposing planes of the Escher room with the Goblin King seemingly around every corner. Some great, creative filmmaking. . Well this one didn’t go like I expected it to. I ended up going WAY representational and ZERO expressive, but it seemed like the right way to go. So it was more of a Murray Tinkelman/Alan Cober riff, than a Bill Sienkiewicz. Babies, man; why do I do these things to myself… . Another dramatic costume change (though it isn’t really shown here) as Jareth confronts Sarah, who has solved his labyrinth, against all odds. . I feel like I’ve been struggling mightily with faces this month, so this one was kind of an ultimatum — a make-or-break day where I was determined to hit, rather than miss. The final showdown is such a magnificent set piece, I thought it deserved some more time and attention. . I’ve always hade a huge affinity for M.C. Escher, and now even moreso. What a set! I don’t know about this drawing; Sarah looks a little wooden to me, and the background was HARD to control. I give it a C. . Inktober 2022 No. 26: The Junk Lady . ”What's the matter my dear, don't you like your toys?” . I always thought this was a really powerful point in the movie, with Sarah being fed all her toys and memories to try to suppress the fact that the entire world was a shambles. And I always think it’s a little unsettling when a character who is not a part of this world happens to know an awful lot about it… . I think parts of this were really pretty successful, and others not so much; there’s a lot of surface to cover and a lot of “things” that you just have to suggest, or you’ll go insane. I took inspiration from Toppi where I felt like I could, and freestyled a lot. Good learning experience. .
