Hey everyone! I was selected to participate on the Mosaic Tour, a tour for Korean Adoptees to return back to Korea (most of whom have never had the opportunity to go back before). We get to stay with a host family, teach at a school, visit a meaningful place (orphanage, agency, etc.), and there is also a birth family search component. The majority of the tour is covered, like lodging and meals, but the roundtrip airfare is not included. I have some money saved, but could really use help as most fares are about $1500. Anything and everything would be so greatly appreciated, even if it’s just a reblog. I’ve never been to Korea before, so it’s hard for me to describe how meaningful and important this trip is to me … but it is no exaggeration when I say it took me over 28 years to get here, and I don’t want to let something like money stand in my way.

Oscars advertisement just called it “the most unpredictable race.”
Nah, the race is pretty predictable.

Let me tell you how many One Direction songs I can name--one? Hold on. I just listened to like three of them for a writing project a couple days ago...
Nope. Not coming to me.
Even so, I still have this weird emotional connection to them. When I found out they broke up--EVEN IF ITS TOTALLY TEMPORARY--I felt a weird hollow feeling. That one post with Barry O and Harry sharing clothes is one of my all time favorite things on tumblr. I found myself constantly rooting for Zayn even though I’m not exactly what I’m rooting for. For some reason, I want to say that Louis is to One Direction as Peggy is to the Schuyler sisters. I don’t know if that’s actually accurate, but the fact that that was a thought that I had in my brain is weird, considering I barely know any of this group’s music.
I initially thought that this is a product of the digital age, being socially invest in a group whose music I really don’t know, but that’s not true. Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith’s reputations preceded them in an age where the limitations of technology kept their records from being distributed as widely as the stories that surrounded them. And that’s really what it means to be a Rock Star--capitalized--isn’t it? Whether we’re talking about Freddie King playing guitar behind his head, Keith Moon smashing hotel rooms, Van Halen’s dislike of brown M+Ms, Jay-Z being a business comma man--isn’t a Rock Star just someone whose whose music is equaled by our emotional investment in their legend?
This is all to state something we already know; with time, the signifiers always change as does the signified. But our interactions with them--the cultural systems that we as consumers and listeners prop up--these largely stay the same. The first person in a booze-soaked juke joint to pass on the rumor of Robert Johnson--and Tommy Johnson before him--selling his soul made the way for my weird emotional investment in the internal affairs of (the former) One Direction.
So all you kids who grew up listening to classic rock, the kids who wanted nothing to do with the top 40 on the radio, the kids who think that rock and Rock Stars are dead, you are proof more than anyone that One Direction matters.
