I've been rewatching How to Train your Dragon again, and I want to talk about Astrid.

I'll be so honest. I don't think she ever wanted to actually kill dragons. I think she wanted to protect her home and those she loved. As she leaned, growing up the way to do that was to fight.

I think this is demonstrated really well in the maze scene, too. There's a small moment after Astrid breaks the shield on Stormfly, where we see her give a brief look where she almost looks sad, maybe a little contemplative. She struck the dragon, and while most would consider that an accomplishment among the trainees, she doesn't.

This is hidden quickly when she, rightfully, so if we're gonna be honest, lays into Hiccup. Her speech leads me more to believe that she's just trying to protect her home. "Our parents' war is about to become ours." The active danger to their home is about to become their responsibility, and they need to take it seriously.

Rewinding a little bit in this scene, her actions also prove to her protective nature. She sees Hiccup on his own in the arena and instead of leaving him there distracted, she whispers out to him, bringing him to focus on what was currently happening around them. Waving him over to join her and Snotlout.

Which is why she's mad at Hiccup here. In her eyes, he was not taken this seriously. It was just proven to her when Hiccup continued to ask questions about a dragon that no one had seen or lived to tell the tale while there was an active threat against them in that arena. Astrid will protect her home and those she cares about, even if it's someone from the inside.

We see this again when Astrid corners Hiccup in the grove. She's pissed at him, suspicious because she knows for a fact no one gets as good as he did in such a short amount of time he did without something or someone. But without hesitation, the moment she spots Toothless, she pushes Hiccup out of the way, axe ready to defend them both. She never leaves Hiccup until he confirms that he befriended Toothless. In her perspective, he befriended one of the creatures actively threatening their home.

I also feel like this explains why she was easily convinced later, too. During that flight, she learns of a different side to the dragons. She also learns it's not the dragons but the Red Death, and they're just trying to survive as well. That's why she's ready to jump on board with Hiccup, why she convinces the others to join. He showed a different way, one that would permanently help their home, and get rid of the threat that plagued them for generations.

listen LISTEN part of what makes hiccup and astrid so interesting as a couple is that astrid is always running towards her duty while hiccup is always running away from his. from the moment we first see her, astrid is 100% devoted to protecting berk, whatever that may mean in any context, and she will be the greatest at it. whether that's slaying dragons, becoming a dragon rider, joining the berk guard, hell even the way she follows hiccup and is the first to believe him is rooted in her unshakable sense of duty, honor, and loyalty to her people and to her island. she's the exact kind of warrior that berk needs at any given time and yet she isn't ever fully recognized for it because that's what's expected of her so naturally being the best at it deserves recognition, but is not revolutionary. meanwhile hiccup is always running towards the next thing. he's spent his whole life rejected and on the outskirts because he couldn't fit the ideal that berk had for him. but then he became a hero overnight, and suddenly everyone follows him. there are some places where he has more authority than even stoick does, and for a boy who spent his whole life rejected by everything, that's terrifying. so when he's not leading the dragon riders, he runs. he lives in his own world. he rejects becoming chief and living out the viking ideal, because why would he want to become the very thing that hurt him. hiccup is driven and loyal yes, but until the end of httyd 2, he's not even close to driven by his duty to berk. astrid is always pushing hiccup towards what fate tells him to be, and even though she supports him through his dreams, it's clear where she thinks his priorities should lie. and hiccup supports astrid in becoming the warrior she wants to become and that she's meant to be, but there's a part of him that tries to pull her away from it. and then on top of that they are above all else loyal to each other, the other dragon riders, and their dragons. it's insane.

Hiccup: Uh… okay… "Astrid Hofferson. Sharp Class. Speed: Unknown. Size: 5'9. Extremely dangerous, never engage -"

this is genius and i wanna cry

dinostar in a soulmate au where you start seeing color when you meet your soulmate and stop seeing it once they die would go crazy. like both of them start seeing color during their first day at camp without really being sure who their soulmate is. them befriending each other and growing up together. darius eventually falling for brooklynn and hoping that she's his soulmate, almost becoming convinced about it.

and then brooklynn dies. and for darius, the world is still colorful and bright, despite his best friend being gone. he waits weeks for the colors to disappear, confused when they never do. so he believes that he must've been wrong, until they meet again in senegal.

anything repetitive he will do

sits on the swings for ages. does not get bored

does not get dizzy at all

Brooklynn:

has not been to a park in ages but gets the hang of it

asks someone (probably Darius or Sammy) to teach her how everything works

the first time, she asked Kenji for help and they honestly thought you climbed up a fireman's pole until Darius corrected them

really enjoys the slides. they remind her of the slide they built on nublar 🥹

Yaz:

either follows Sammy around or babysits everyone's bags under a tree and doodles

she loves plugging in earbuds, turning up the music, and sitting on the swings for a bit. that is strictly Yasmina Time, however, so don't disturb her if she's on the swings

Sammy:

loves everything and goes around each piece of equipment

goes very fast on roundabouts and 

particularly likes those things you sit on that have a spring where you rock backward and forward. it's like wrangling a bull, and she screams with joy every time she goes on them

always offers to push kids on the swings. gains a new 5 year old bff every park visit

her and Kenji have contests to see who can go highest on the swings (she always wins)

Kenji:

used to think playgrounds were too childish (his dad discouraged them)

like Brooklynn, he also had to be taught how to use the equipment

reminder that in s3 ep1 he tries to go up the slide backwards

goes around everything once with Sammy and then falls asleep under a tree with Yaz

gets very dizzy and almost throws up on the roundabout

Ben:

sits on the top of the climbing structure and watches everyone else

i can't believe there's a movie/musical that makes me feel heartbroken, nostalgic, sexy, excited for summer, hopelessly romantic, sorrow for my mother, horny, and angry at capitalism all in under two hours, but that movie/musical exists and it's called mamma mia
