So I’ve been googling around trying to find out where the slug and the mackerel come from. It turns out the actual Dazai Osamu and Nakahara Chuuya did call each other that lol.

Dazai was bitching to a friend about Chuuya - “There’s no way I can be acquainted with such a shiny slug like ~fine person~.”

and Chuuya actually call Dazai to his face, “You look like a mackerel floating in the sky!” (lol)

In which Chuuya chased Dazai to his house at night after their fight. (seriously wtf is wrong with this guy)
