Sam placed the cheap bouquet down on Jess’ grave, the petals nearly wilting as they touched the damp ground. The dirt was settling but no grass yet grew; it was all still fresh, new, she haunted him still. 

His knee sunk into the earth, khakis staining with mud, but he didn’t care. He traced her name again and again with his eyes, carving the letters into the stone and his memory. Going off with Dean to find their father, finally hunting the thing that had killed his mother and Jess- it wasn’t exactly going to be easy, and this might be the last time he’d visit her grave. 

Y/N watched from a few graves away, mindful not to step on anyone’s heads. She kept to the green aisles between the markers, sneakers squeaking in the wet grass. He’d asked her to come with him, but not to come near, and she kept a good distance, far enough not to disturb him, but close enough should he call. 

Sam’s head dropped and his fingers reached out, tucking into the carvings on the stone. He always found it funny that she had the same birthday as his brother, and now, the same date of death as his mother. In the back of his mind, he knew there must be something to all that, logic said coincidences didn’t really exist, but he couldn’t think past the last time he saw her. She was so beautiful, so happy, so warm. She brought out something in him that he had never felt before, and he feared, never would again. 

His own voice startled him; a deep sob crept up from the depths of his soul and spilled out into the stormy afternoon.

Y/N was at his side in an instant. “Sam?” 

He brushed away the tears quickly and stood, hardening his face before she could see the true pain. “Ready?” he asked, turning to look for the car but eyes sweeping over her head. 

“Yeah, but-”

Sam started to walk away, brushing past her, but Y/N stopped him. “Sam. Wait.” 

He held his breath and looked down, wondering what she could possibly say to make anything alright. He barely knew her, she couldn’t fix him, couldn’t fix anything. His jaw clenched as he waited, prepared to brush off anything she had to say. 

Y/N said nothing. She reached up and around him, pulling Sam down to her and into a tight hug. His chin rested on her shoulder and he shook in her arms, unsure of what to do. No one had hugged him in so long, not like this, not when he needed it so badly. 

“I got you.” That’s all she said, that’s all she needed to say. No placations or empty promises, just letting him know that she was there with him, no matter what. 

His arms rose and wrapped around her, hugging her back. Sam buried his face in the crook of her neck and cried, hot tears coming fast and strong, soaking into her shirt. 

They stayed like that for too long and the rain began to fall again, misting around them like cloud kisses until the heavens decided to open up fully. 

“You’re gonna be OK, Sam,” she said, finally letting him go. 

He smiled. Not happy, but not politely, either. It was real. He wasn’t sure what it meant, but it felt right. “Thanks.” 

They walked back to the car, picking up speed as the raindrops became more aggressive. 

The flowers on Jess’ grave soaked into the ground, broken petals on settling earth.
