Quadrophenia was Pete Townsend’s opus and the band’s only album that was composed 100% by him. 40 years ago today, Neil released his 9th album. The original pressing sounded bad because the masters were damaged in transit. Neil didn’t want people to hear a less than perfect product and personally bought 200,000 copies in an attempt to prevent sales. The rumor is that he shingled a barn with those. He was able to step in and correct the issues with the safety master on subsequent pressings.
