Not my mother, Jon thought stubbornly. He knew nothing of his mother; Eddard Stark would not talk of her. Yet he dreamed of her at times, so often that he could almost see her face. In his dreams, she was beautiful, and highborn, and her eyes were kind.

Historians have long speculated and debated whether or not Elizabeth I ever had a real desire for marriage. Elizabeth made protestations both for and against the institution and the matter remains largely speculative. Nevertheless, perhaps the only man who seemed to have temporarily tempted her into it for the sake of love and affection was Robert Dudley. Plenty of reasons have been given as to why she ultimately decided not to: he offered no international alliance, he was ambitious to a fault, Elizabeth wanted to keep a firm hand on her sovereignty, he was hated by many, his reputation was stained by his wife’s death and family history and, ultimately, any marriage to an English nobleman would inevitably create factions and threaten civil war, especially while he was so unpopular. All are sound arguments, but one has to wonder if there was not another, more personal, reason for Elizabeth’s decision to not marry Robert.
Elizabeth knew perfectly well that Robert was unpopular even if she thought it was undeserved. She also knew all too well what happened to those of controversial reputation who reached high places. Her mother had been a woman of noble birth who Henry VIII fell deeply in love with and eventually made Queen of England after divorcing his first wife, Katherine of Aragon. Admired yet also reviled, the brutal combination of court machinations, politics and sheer bad luck ultimately brought Anne to her death. Though the circumstances were certainly different, perhaps Elizabeth began to see a disturbing mirror image in her relationship with Robert Dudley. Like her father, she loved the one person very few wanted her to marry. Like Anne, Robert was bitterly envied and the victim of foul rumours. Such it goes for the royal favourite. Had Elizabeth married Robert, it would have certainly been possible, even probable, that plots would be made to rid England of him as well. Henry VIII moved Heaven and Earth to marry Anne Boleyn. His daughter Elizabeth would not do the same for Robert Dudley. But by not doing so, she was protecting not only herself but Robert himself from potentially sharing Anne’s fate - and perhaps she knew that.

i love alternate history, and i like a good comedy, but what i don't get is:
why on earth you would make a comedy about jane grey's brief reign. what exactly is funny here, exactly? it just feels like it trivialises her life
what's the point of writing about the reformation and then removing the reformation and replacing it with shapeshifting? 😭 just write a fantasy novel for fuck's sake
why the fuck would you get rid of john dudley (by name) and henry grey (full stop)? at this point you might as well get rid of mary! or everyone please

“I want to read you,” he says.
Henry traces her jaw line, begins at the straight vertical part that starts right behind her earlobe, down to the edge of where her chin starts. He cups his hand and brushes it against the edge, softly, the faintest touch, really, a flap of a butterfly’s wings (but it leaves her burning, nonetheless).
“In Braille?” Anne teases, and is rewarded for the comment by a sharp exhale, as if he’s been holding his breath.
“If you don’t kiss me right now, I’ll be mad,” she informs him.
“And if I do?”
“…I’ll be mad.”
“Seems fair,” he says.

Natalie Dormer when she’s just trying to act in The Tudors but I keep screenshotting every scene:

The first challenge came almost immediately. Natalie had auditioned in her natural hair color, which is blonde, fully expecting that if she got the role she would play Anne as a brunette. She knew her history, and it never occurred to her that the executives at Showtime would have anything else in mind. She was concerned, in fact, that her strong physical differences from Anne—including her blue eyes—would disqualify her for the part. She reassured herself about the eyes—“they aren’t the right color, but just like Anne, I’ve been told they are my most becoming feature” (actually, there’s not a feature on Natalie’s face that isn’t dazzling.) But she knew the hair would have to be changed. So after she received the phone call telling her she’d won the part—largely on the basis, Hirst told me, of the “physical chemistry” between her and Rhys Meyers (Natalie describes it as “a lot of heaving bosom stuff”), after becoming “hysterical with joy,” she immediately dyed her hair. When she arrived on set, Dee Corcoran, chief of the hair department, who won an Emmy for her work on the show and was “almost like an Irish mother” to Natalie, took her aside. “Okay, we’ve got a really serious problem—you dyed your hair. They are really unhappy. Really unhappy.” “They” were the Showtime execs. “So they sent me back to the hairdresser and they tried to dye blonde back in. But any hairdresser will tell you that it doesn’t work to put peroxide blonde on jet black. I looked like a badger! I was terrified that I’d lose the role. I mean, what did they have planned, now that I was multi-colored—to put me in a blonde wig?” Dormer wasn’t sure she could accept that. “Anne’s hair color is such an important detail! For one thing, it was the basis of a lot of nasty labels—Wolsey calling her the “night crow” and so on. And also, in being a confident brunette she was defying the ideal, of what it meant for a female to be attractive at that time.” “So we’re all barely cast, and I went to Bob Greenblatt with my heart in my mouth, and told him how important it was that Anne be dark. ‘Bob, I have to play her dark. It’s so important. You have to let me play her dark!’ Some might say I was being melodramatic and self-important. But I thought it would just be a direct betrayal of Anne. Of her refusal to step into the imprint of the acceptable norm at the time.” “Greenblatt, who is a very shrewd man, just said ‘I’ll think about it.” I assumed I’d lost the job. I felt completely and utterly depressed. But then I got a phone call a few days later, telling me that Bob had decided I could be dark.”

Hi, I love reading your Tudor headcanons and I was wondering if you have any about modern!EoY?
Thank you!!! I had to think just a bit on this because most of my current modern au’s EoY is not alive anymore :( but then I realized I have a lot.
• Elizabeth is an extremely hands-on, doting mother, except to Arthur; he’s her husband’s. With her other children, she likes to cook, bake, clean (even with the maids), read them bedtime stories, teach them to read and write, braid the girls’ hair, etc. Possibly home schools them as well.• Her children are spoiled, yes, but not that spoiled that they are void of some perspective of the privilege they possess in comparison to others. She told them tales of the hard times she and her family fell on and takes them to soup kitchens, etc.• Baby books are very elaborate, although Henry’s is the most detailed – she couldn’t help herself.• She has a very special bond with little Henry. They basically have their own language, just the two of them. When he has meltdowns, she’s the only one that can quickly console him.• Basically this.• Whatever her husband does for a living, she’s generally regarded as a stunning trophy wife, though her kind nature surprises people.• Her library is massive and she’s a skilled pianist who passes this talent onto her youngest children. She installed a music room when they were young.• A lightweight as a teenager but you can’t even tell how many glasses of wine she’s downed now because she’s a fucking boss like that.• Can make her children behave with a look.• Any AU set around/after a war, she was a nurse.• Elizabeth is the neighbor that shows up at every housewarming with a homemade dish.• The York family reunions are massive and her sisters/mother drop by all the time and her husband is like “…great”• Like irl, she breeds greyhounds and assists in the births and gives most away as presents, although those she does sell go for a high price.• Keeps white roses everywhere in her home and maintains picturesque gardens. She has no issue rolling up her sleeves and getting some dirt on her.• Has a signature perfume she never changes from so her children and grandchildren always associate it with her. (My own mother did this, actually.)• Elizabeth (+Margaret) is the first ones to warm to Anne Boleyn because Elizabeth is nothing if not a loving person. (I actually believe Margaret and Anne would be besties, k~)• Cries when Henry and Anne tell her they’re naming their daughter after her. • Margaret and Mary used to dress up in her clothes and high heels and put on a fashion show that she and Henry were made to watch.
