took a tour of the Globe Theatre today and the guide was talking about how Shakespeare knew how to write a tight plot, “unlike the latest episodes of Doctor Who.” I did a kind of sheepish shrug and then he turned and said directly to me “Sorry but someone needs to tell Russel T Davies that that was absolute rubbish.”

Now job has decided to contact me during my European vacation to let me know they like my performance and want me to apply for a new position they are opening soon! This involves filling out a bunch of forms and demonstrating the skills needed for the position! The deadline to submit these things is: the same day I return to work! I cannot actually open any of the forms or read the new job description! This is something I am apparently expected to complete immediately after returning to the US! :) :) :)

So tomorrow I leave for a vacation to London! Very exciting, I’ve been looking forward to this trip for over a year now!

Aaaaand everything at work has recently careened into the toilet.

The manager was fired

An interim manager from another location arrived to fill in and was a lot more strict with the rules (fair! Too many staff were not following the current rules and it was causing problems.)

Staff did not like the changes and a lot of staff quit

Including 3 of our 4 supervisors

We are now severely understaffed

New management denies the PTO request I put in 3 months ago before all of this went down

I inform them that I am not cancelling my European vacation and reiterate the days I will be out

New manager says I need to message her every single morning to inform her I will not be coming in and if I miss three days of calling out that counts as voluntary resignation

(This basically feels like messaging her every day begging her not to fire me?)

Also she says I need to fill out leave paperwork with insurance since I’ll be gone more than three days

I go to fill out paperwork and there is no option to take leave for a vacation/ only for medical reasons, military service, or to provide care for a close family member

Ask manager what to do since none of these apply? She says just pick the closest one

Luckily? (Not really) My mom had a really bad back injury a month ago and is now wearing a back brace, but is still able to go on the trip. I submit her ER bill and spin my trip as talking time off to care for my ailing mother.

Today, my last day before leaving, we have a meeting with regional leadership where they outline a NEW attendance policy they spin as being more flexible for employees but is actually more restrictive and punitive

Under the new policy calling out on a day where your PTO has been denied leads to 2 attendance “points”, twice as many points as just calling out the day of without giving prior notice

12 points is grounds for termination

My vacation will now earn me 13 points 💀

Spoke with leadership who says they’ll work with me and won’t pursue termination since I am otherwise in good standing. But I’m still so mad it’s come to this? I’ve done everything right? Communicated as much as possible and did everything except cancel a once in a lifetime trip? And still they want me to beg for my job.

This new policy is going to backfire on them horribly because now it actually makes more sense NOT to inform leadership of when you plan to be out. If you do tell them and they deny it you get penalized more than if you just flaked out the day of.

… I need to start looking for a new job.

I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"

One of my favorite stories to tell about myself from when I was a kid is the story how my grandma’s “Catching Fairies” game was banned because of me

So when I was really little my grandma had this game she made up, she’d give me and all my cousins jars and containers and tell us that in her garden there were fairies but they were smart and tricky so they disguised themselves as caterpillars and butterflies and as grasshoppers and worms.

Whoever caught the most ‘Fairies’ won but we had to set them all free because they tended to the garden

One summer day my brothers were at the age they were dreading ‘girly’ stuff so I was playing alone

At this point I had met all the fairies in the garden and I was getting bored without any competition and with finding the same old fairies

But then just as I was begrudgingly heading back to my grandma with the same fairies as usual I found a new fairy!

I thought she was so beautiful! She was resting on the sparkly thread in the leaves and her black body gleamed in the sunlight, she had long legs and a cool red spot on her back

Excited I coaxed her onto my hand and was so giddy I found a new one! I rushed back to the farm house to show my Grandma and Dad, gently carrying my new friend.

But when my Dad and Grandma turned around to see what fairy I caught I saw the color drain from their faces and both of them freeze, I could tell something was wrong but didn’t understand

My dad congratulated me and asked me if he could see the pretty fairy, I let him but felt a little nervous seeing how terrified he looked as she moved into his hands from mine.

Slowly he walked back towards the door, my grandma clutching my shoulders then my dad LAUNCHED the fairy back into the garden which I thought was rather rude

Then we had a nice long talk about Black Widow spiders
