Larger Identity System...

This was a graphic poster I found for the larger identity system of MSU Health Promotion. Before reading any of the information, I already knew it was for MSU Health Promotion because of its recognizable graphic style. Their style is recognizable because they consistently provide fun and creative data visualizations, use a consistent typeface, use mostly state green or white, and have cartoon-like illustrations of squirrels (or sometimes ducks.)

Data Visualization...

I found this data visualization piece displaying the “Global World Temperature Index” on the Behance Pinterest page. Although the display of the data is very visually appealing, it lacks informing readers of actual numbered data. The visualization rather utilizes colors, visuals, and a compelling title to communicate that there has been an increase in Global Temperature. Additionally, there is a powerful illustration of a person looking up at the “fire,” which I believe contributes to their underlying agenda of showing there is a growing problem with rising global temperatures.

Reference to "style"

Similar to the BBQ sauce example, Vernors packaging is designed to look rustic and old. The graphic design makes the aluminum can appear as a wooden barrel. Textures are also added to make it look worn down. The Vernors logo font keeps consistent with the old and classic theme. Overall, the graphic design used makes the drink appear authentic, classic, and aged.

Symbolic function...

The packaging for these melatonin gummies includes a picture of the moon. As a culture, we associate the moon with sleep. This signifies that these vitamins can be used to aid with sleep.

Indexical function...

On this packaging, the additional graphic elements, like the center circle window, wings, and fire output function indexically to the symbol of the “rocket pop” popsicle. The addition of the fire outputs gives the effect that the rocket is moving as well. Also, since this popsicle is called a “rocket pop” this also adds to the meaning and relevance of the graphic design choices.

Iconic Function...

This stairs sign is an example of an iconic function. The image resembles the actual look of the stairs, and can clearly be defined as stairs.

Denotative & Connotative meaning...

In this example, the denotative meaning of this sign is; two green teardrop shapes surrounded by a white border with the words “frozen breads” and “frozen breakfast” beside it, written in a sans serif font. As for the connotative meaning, our culture often uses leaves to represent health. On this sign, the leaf icon placed next to the labels is meant to express that there are healthy frozen bread and breakfasts down this grocery store aisle.

rhythm… I noticed a good rhythm in the Fall 2022 issue of VIM Magazine. This spread is just one example, but the rhythm remains throughout.

modernist font… From "Helvetica," I understand two traits of modernist fonts to be 1. legible, and 2. simple. These traits apply to the clean font used on this packaging.

The font used here is meant to resemble the look of graffiti. The look of this font adds to the style of the page, complimenting the theme.

small x-height...

small x-height...

The font used for "Fanatic" has a small x-height. This is especially apparent in the lowercase "a" next to the uppercase "F."

Ascenders...

In this graphics title, the ascender letter, "t," appears multiple times.

Descender...

There are two descenders in the tile of this graphic; the "g" and the "p."

Crossbars...

The "PARTAKE" contains examples of crossbar letters. The stylized crossbar of the "A" particularly stands out in this example.

Counter...

The Aquafina logo has four counter letters. Both the "A" (x3) and the "Q" are counters. The slogan below the logo has 9 more counter letters.

Large x-height...

The "Cheerios" font has a large x-height. With a large x-height, the letters look taller and the lowercase letters are close in height to the capital "C." This large x-height is especially noticeable when looking at the "h" since it has a tall arch and a short ascender.

Typographic hierarchy...

This graphic uses large, bold text for the text, "YOU NEED YOUR ID." This use of typographic hierarchy draws viewers' eyes to this message first. This is used well, clearly communicating the most important information of the graphic.
