MORE HIMEMYAS BECAUSE I LOVE HER!!!!!!!! I saw helloanthy draw chiho saitos version of her green dress and I was like yea I love that design I’m gonna draw that and then so I did. I think I am kinda finally settling into an anthy design which is awesome. Also I need to render stuff more in pencil again because I had so much fun doing the shoes and choker, although I kinda gave up on the hair, I’ll definitely take a different approach for that next time.

Maybe it’s just me but some scenes that people say are great and sympathetic depictions of rape I just heavily disagree honestly. What I am talking about is two things so I will try to be brief.
The first one is about rgu, while I love rgu I think it’s pretty evident by my account, I think it’s also very flawed in ways that many people do not mention. I think it can perpetuate some misogynistic ideas and is pretty racist when characterizing anthy and akio. But what I am talking about is one of its depiction of rape that is in ep 33 the prince who runs through the night. I understand why people might appreciate it, but to me the perspective it takes, the way utena is drawn is honestly more screwed up than helpful. Maybe part of the reason is when I first watched rgu this scene did trigger me severely and I am biased, but Idk, when people praise it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I guess this post is me trying to understand why I dislike this scene so much, beyond it triggering my own trauma. Part of the reason it’s praised, but, part of the reason I find it distasteful is how it’s framed from akios perspective. Honestly the lead up is not bad to me, even from akios perspective. What most people praise it for I agree with. However it’s the scene where akio is actually on top of utena where I find issue with. I guess the way utena is drawn herself her expressions and the way she looks is what I find extremely disgusting. I think I’ll put the photos in the post so I can do a deeper analysis on the frames. So trigger warning now because I know how hard it is for me to look at these scenes and u shouldn’t have to deal with them if u don’t want to.
I think one of my issues is the lipgloss they put on her during this scene. Often used in the show to ‘emphasize her femininity’ its a way designate her as the victim or prey of akio. And while that inherently is not bad it’s trying to contribute to keeping this scene being aesthetically appealing which the rest of her expressions are also meant to show. She is drawn with big open eyes with a little bit of a pout trying to show her as innocent and unknowing, its important to note she is minimally expressive here which contributes to the language and way rape is often fetishized by society. She looks a little bit disgruntled in the upper right image which I appreciate, but the bottom left image with the sideways glance and posing of the fingers is just worse. The index finger leads your eyes to her lips bringing out more of the idea that she is meant to be consumed as a sexual object and I think the sideways glance is meant to emphasize this shyness or demureness. The bottom right image honestly is the most egregious to me. The way her mouth is drawn in the o ish shape is drawing more into that sexual yet demure imagery and they fact that her eyes are curved slightly upwards while draw here does not really show discomfort or fear its meant to be an alluring expression.

Take this in comparison to, this scene with anthy and her expression:

While yes it is different in that this is her after being raped, alongside how anthy expresses herself differently it’s important to under the visual language of the show. To make my point I am going to pull from sexual official art made of these underage characters to show you similarities to the rape scene.
The image here has the most similarities with the bottom right image for the rape scene. Her expression is almost the exact same and you can explicitly see its goal to entice the viewer. This was drawn official art of the show. Make no mistake this is meant as jack off material.
Additionally here is Miki making a similar expression to utena on the top left. These sexual drawings of these characters and the way the rape is drawn is utilizing the same visual language.
So then why use this same expression during her rape, to me the answer is that for the audience it’s meant to be titillating. That is why I have such an issue with this scene, why it’s not a good portrayal of rape. it does one of the top 3 things not to do in a rape scene, to be arousing. And I know ppl are gonna argue that it’s meant to be from Akios perspective so of course to him it’s going to be arousing, and to that I ask another question, to what end? What is so important to portray utena this way? What is gained by taking the perspective of the rapists arousal?? As an example that works well in the show just look at the scenes leading up to the rape. It shows utena feels small trapped nervous and playing a role she does not realize she’s apart of yet. Realizing you are taking akios perspective is horrifying because you are like who is she talking to and then you slowly realize what’s going to happen, however what is the point of still being in the rapists perspective now?? There is a reason the scenes have an epidemic of being posted as ‘aesthetic’ screenshots it’s not a coincidence it’s the intent of how the scene is drawn. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I hate how this scene was portrayed it’s the worst part of the show and not because it’s devastating it just feels genuinely unsympathetic and fetishistic.
Remember how this was meant to be about two scenes? Yea well the second one is from morel Orel. The scene that supposedly got it cancelled u probably know what I’m talking about. I won’t go deep into analysis cuz tbh idgaf abt morel orel. It’s with nurse bendy and rather than being sympathetic it feels as if it was meant to be comedic tbh (at bendys expense I MEAN HER NAME IS NURSE BENDY CAN WE GET MORE OBVIOUS) and seeing how the show treated the plot line of morel accidentally raping the women of the town just bcuz he wanted to jack off I’m not to surprised. What I was surprised by is during its resurgence people calling it a great depiction of the trauma that comes from rape rather than a joke coming at her expense. It’s felt like more edgy 2010s humor.
Ik there are a lot of hard core rgu fans on twitter who hate criticism so if anyone happens to read this plz don’t repost to twitter I don’t want to be harassed. Maybe this the wrong place to put this plea but there is a reason I left twitter and it’s not just Elon. I will still tag because I’m hoping tumblr is a nicer community and I can get some discussion and criticism or maybe people even enhancing my post with their own thoughts because this is important to me.
#rgu analysis#maybe I will talk about the racism on the show one day but not today#I love utena I promise look at my account it’s all I draw and reboot#I just think it’s important to be critical of the media you consume#and I just saw one to many ppl praising this scene today so I guess it set me off#these thoughts have been bubbling for years tho#utena tenjou#anthy himemiya#rgu
