Part II of II in Lovecraftian acquisitions:
The second book from the “Two books from Lovecraft’s library” is actually a two-volume edition. “Latin Literature in the Empire II” is strictly in Latin, with the exception of the editor’s preface and commentary at the end of each poem, which are in English. The binding needs some attention, but still a solid book. I’m still on the lookout for volume one of “Latin Literature” set.
Also, I’ve included the image of the actual books from HPL’s library from the original posting.
Latin Literature in the Empire, edited by Alfred Gudeman, 1899.

Part I of II in Lovecraftian acquisitions:
Two years ago, I found two books from H.P. Lovecraft’s personal library for sale. A Survey of Greek Civilization was one of them. Unfortunately, I didn’t have $6,000 dollars to drop, so I lost that chance of “prestige” in owning Lovecraft’s books. However, I got this copy for $12. Same book, just different owner, and I’m okay with that 🤎
A Survey of Greek Civilization, J.P. Mahaffy, 1896.

“As if this weren’t enough, that December night he went an important step further. The damage caused by his everyday drugs was in a sense reversible, given that whenever his hangover had passed, van Gogh invariably took the decision to mend his ways. But now he did irreparable damage to his body. He was to remain mutilated till the day he died.” — Vincent Van Gogh The Complete Paintings, p. 462, Taschen.
It’s so minor of a discovery, but I noticed whilst reading, that after cutting his ear, Vincent painted the remainder of his self-portraits from his opposite side.

5.9.23
Personally, this book is bittersweet. I want to be done with it, and yet, I don’t want it to end. Like for example, after thirty-six chapters, I’m so happy the two protagonists finally surrendered to their mutual attraction. However, it’s still too soon to say if their romance will be able withstand the horrors of World War II.
